As
the name implies, Skyway Jack's Restaurant is located
near Tampa Bay's world famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Now
that there are bigger suspension bridges in the world, one might
question if the restaurant has become the more famous of the
two. Skyway Jack's opens at for breakfast at 5 AM. How are the
prices? On a recent trip to St Petersburg I took eight people
for breakfast and got off for less than sixty bucks,
including the tip.
Don't get all dressed up
thinking this is a fancy place. The fanciest thing in the
restaurant are the ceramic pigs lined up on one wall. They also
have a giant chicken and pig out by the road. The walls are
adorned with handmade posters, bumper stickers and all sorts of
kitsch. The fanciest thing I could find on the menu was eggs
Florentine. The breakfast menu has just about everything and
anything your heart desires including stuffed French toast, all
kinds of sweet breads, corn muffins, grits, and even scrambled
pork brains. There are lots of treats for those of you that
enjoy good old Southern cooking.
Bound and determined to see if
Skyway Jack's would get the southern cooking right, I ordered
biscuits and gravy and my nephew ordered corned beef hash. The
table also included poached eggs, pancakes topped with
strawberries, eggs sunny side up, lots of toast and even a
couple of items from the lunch menu including a hot turkey
sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. There were no
complaints from anyone and if you're looking for some kind of
revelation about the food, your missing the point, this just
isn't that kind of place. Having eaten at Skyway Jack's several
times I can say this, the food is delicious and reliable. There
is very little variation in the quality of the food or the
service from one time to the next, and I think that's why we
keep going back.
Skyway Jack's closes after
lunch, so don't show up for dinner. In addition to the foods
we've tried, there are also burgers, fried chicken and even
spaghetti that we heard someone raving about at the table next
to us. The vegetables of the day usually include things like
greens, black eyed peas and fried okra. You'll never find any of
those on my plate, but hey, this is the south! |
