Weekly Wrap-Up

On Monday Elements presented the benefit to send Diva to Miss Continental Elite. It was obvious that Diva is well loved in this town by the amount of people that showed up to support this event and by the amount of silent auction items that were donated to raise money for the event, and by the amount of entertainers that showed up to perform. The event was a huge success and raised lots of money to send Diva to Chicago in style.

Jennifer McClain celebrated her birthday last week at Smarty Pants and on hand were nearly 100 friends (yes, I counted) to sing along and wish her well. Owners Mark and Fritz put out a wonderful buffet and filled the place with loads of balloons. Two cakes, with a number of candles that we won't reveal were presented and yes Jennifer blew all of them out! Happy Birthday Jennifer from all of us at Mark's South Florida List.

Saturday night is ladies night at Elements as Alison and Julie present the weekly Ultra Party. Last weekend the ladies turned out en masse for the 3rd annual She Magazine She-King contest. Eight contestants vied for $1,000, a huge trophy and of course, the King's crown. In the end Spikey Dikey came out as the winner.

Jackhammer's 3rd Annual Easter Bonnet contest had the boys out early for Sunday T. It's always surprising to see how many butch guys will create incredibly ornate Easter bonnets and then show up at Jackhammer wearing them. Kudos to Russell and Chris for another Easter Sunday we won't soon forget.

Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
On Friday, April 21st at 7:30pm, before the projector starts reeling out this year's hilarious Opening Night film, Reinas (Queens), the stage of the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts welcomes an incredible duo to kick off the 8th annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival with lots of sabor!   Legendary Latin American star Charytin joins forces with Miami's own beloved drag queen Adora as their 2006 Opening Night Divas of Ceremonies. In keeping with the theme of Reinas (Queens), which stars an incredible cast of Latina divas from Spain and Argentina, including Carmen Maura, Marisa Paredes, Verónica Forqué, Mercedes Sampietro and Betiana Blum, their 2006 Divas will kick off the 8th annual MGLFF with skits and songs that bring the legend of  "La Rubia de America", Charytin, and the unstoppably outrageous Adora together with full-color, over-the-top life! The singer and comedienne Charytin is a star of screen and stage whose nothing-but-hits career has included chart-topping songs, a long-running hit television variety show and sold-out concerts throughout Latin America, Europe, and Asia.  She can currently be seen as host of Telefutura's internationally televised daily talk show, El Escándalo del Mediodia. Adora, has been entertaining throngs of Miami audiences for over 15 years with a repetoire of songs by La Lupe, Maria Callas, Yma Sumac and others will join Charytin.  In 2005 she was chosen as Best Drag Queen by Miami New Times and her outrageous and unique look inspired a recent photographic exhibit at a local gallery.

DJ David Knapp Goes Global With New Global Groove CD

Centaur is thrilled to announce that as the 2006 Global Groove Tour hits full stride in the nation's top dance clubs, Dj David Knapp steps it up with a new Global Groove CD that blends his signature beats and diva-driven vocals.  Global Groove: Dj David Knapp is David's fourth mix for the Global Groove brand, which includes Dignity, Livin Out Loud and House 2.  David and fellow Global Groove Dj Kimberly S are currently headlining the 2006 Global Groove Tour, which is visiting 30 cities in 6 different countries. "David's upbeat mixes have certainly contributed to the success of the Global Groove brand since it was introduced in 2000," says Centaur's Chief Operating Officer Jamie Baxter.  "The planning and energy David has put into his latest Global Groove CD is indicative of his talent and desire to always be at his best."  David has drawn from a global pool of award winning artists, producers and remixers to make Global Groove: Dj David Knapp a poignant summer must-have.  In signature fashion, David has incorporated familiar favorites including #1 hits from international superstars Goldfrapp and Kings of Tomorrow, as well as the latest #1 hit from state-side dance icon Kim English.  Additionally, David has uncovered several new gems from Ralphi Rosario, Offer Nissim, Dolce and new pop sensations Jason & deMarco.  The collaborations of DJs Are Alive (which includes the vocal talent of Kristine W) and Cevin Fisher with The Scumfrog on the Sade classic "Like Paradise" highlight the experimental efforts in today's dance genre.  David has also blended the remix talents of today's biggest names including Tony Moran, Tracy Young, Superchumbo and Valentino Kanzyani. Often hailed as the "original circuit Dj," David has headlined every major event in North America over the past two decades while continuing his tenure as a Billboard reporting Dj.  David is arguably one of the hardest working Djs today and one of the few American Djs to sustain such momentum in an industry that is constantly reinventing itself.  Next month, David will also return to Asia and Europe for much anticipated stops on the Global Groove Tour, revisiting his fan base at the biggest nightclubs in Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Prague and Bratislava. Centaur introduced the groundbreaking Global Groove CD series to the world in 2000, offering a fresh and exciting new promise to dance music lovers in the gay community.  Developed to showcase the biggest DJ names and various styles within the dance genre, the Global Groove brand has received accolades for pushing boundaries and unveiling the world’s best dance tracks.  With an unprecedented 26 volumes in the series, Global Groove is undoubtedly the most recognized gay consumer brand in music. The official release date for Global Groove: Dj David Knapp is set for April 25, and will be available in stores nationwide including Virgin Megastore, Tower Records, and online at www.centaurmusic.com. Instinct Magazine, Genre Magazine and Scene Magazine are the National Media Sponsors, making it the most highly publicized tour event in the gay community this year.  Additional sponsors include Interactive Male, Ajaxx63 and Ginch Gonch. The Official website for the 2006 Global Groove Tour is www.GlobalGrooveCD.com, and includes a complete listing of all confirmed dates and venues.

A live recording of the one-night-only benefit concert WEDrock, held in New York City on April 28, will be released on CD by Centaur Entertainment on May 2.  The album features a star-studded line-up of musicians and entertainers all lending support in favor of equal marriage rights for same-sex couples.  Proceeds from the WEDrock album will support Freedom to Marry, the gay and non-gay partnership working to win marriage equality nationwide. Men-about-downtown Josh Wood and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) produced the rockin' concert of music, comedy and mayhem, with the goal of raising the roof and consciousness on the hot-button topic of proposed federal and state constitutional amendments to write discrimination into marriage law. "I think it's important for artists to speak out against discrimination and add our voices in favor of equality for all," says John Cameron Mitchell.  And featured artist Bob Mould says, "The fact that the right is making a gigantic moral issue of gay marriage should outrage most Americans.  If you take the religious argument out of the picture, you eliminate a lot of the rhetoric that the Right base their arguments on." Included in the WEDrock live recording are the wildly and wonderful acerbic Sandra Bernhard, the side-splitting, funny-lady herself Margaret Cho, the talented, glam-sensation John Cameron Mitchell, the powerful indie rock sounds of Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney, Bob Mould of Husker Du and Sugar, and the Tony Award winning actor Alan Cumming.  The legendary Lou Reed also makes a guest appearance, delivering a spoken-word version of his classic hit "Walk On The Wild Side." The proceeds from the album will go to support Freedom to Marry's activities nationwide.  Headed by Evan Wolfson, one of America's leading civil rights advocates and lawyers, Freedom to Marry brings new resources and a renewed context of urgency and opportunity to this social justice movement.   For more information, visit the website at: www.FreedomtoMarry.org. WEDrock will be available in record stores nationwide beginning Tuesday May 2, including Virgin Megastore, Tower Records, Spec*s Music, as well as online at www.centaurmusic.com where music samples are available for each song.
