Weekly Wrap-Up |
Monday was the end of a week long of celebration at Georgie’s
Alibi for their 9th anniversary. The
Anniversary celebration ended with a fabulous performance by New
York’s own Lady Bunny. As usual she put on a one of a kind show that
packed the Alibi; it took me 15 minutes just to find a parking
spot. Congrats to George, Adam, Terry and the
whole gang over at Alibi, and here’s hoping they have many more
years of success!!!
While I was
in the shopping center I decide to go visit my friend
Jennifer McClain who hosts Karaoke at Boom on Mondays
and Tuesdays. As usual her smile lit up the room as she is one
of the best Karaoke hostess’s around!! Pictured is Jennifer with
Boom bartender Tony.
As I was
driving out of the Wilton Shoppe’s parking lot I received a call
that there was a benefit for The Pet Project over at
Monkey Business, and since I hadn’t had the opportunity to
visit this bar yet, I decided it was time I go over and check it
out. The bar is very nice on the inside and even has a small
patio. Performing that night was Shardee Ross, Viva Mirage,
Amanda West, Ginger Snapped, Marilyn, and many more. It so
reminded me of the Hideaway, which I for one miss!!!
I then headed over to Chase for the final Brazilian
Monday night before they close their doors permanently. As
usual the place was decorated festively and the crowd was
jumping. When I was there I found out that Brazilian night is
going to live as they are moving it to Roxanne’s (On the
corner of Oakland and Dixie Highway).

athletes, artists and spectators for the 2006
Chicago
Gay Games.
Centaur is excited to announce a partnership with the Chicago Gay Games, making
Centaur the Official Music Sponsor. Centaur will produce two official CDs for

"We are excited about this partnership to produce an Official CD for Gay Games

Meth documentary showing at Miami Gay and
Lesbian Film Festival |
If you
think Todd Ahlberg's
riveting documentary Meth,
which will screen at the 8th annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival on
Thursday, April 27th at
9:45pm
at the Regal South Beach, will be a preachy and/or dry "meth-is-bad" diatribe,
think again! What Meth
does is give you more information. Director Todd
Ahlberg doesn't try to be all things to all people, but
captures how meth works its way in and out (but never totally out) of five gay
white men living in urban settings. I applaud his fortitude, and encourage you
to attend MGLFF's screening of Meth not
only for the powerful experience of the documentary itself, but a chance to hear
Todd speak about the behind-the-scenes story of how to make a film which
features a drug as both the main hero and the primary villian. One of the men
featured in the documentary, Mark King
of Ft. Lauderdale, comes from within our very own community and will also attend
the screening to discuss his participation in
Meth. For more info about the
movie Meth go to

Letter From Michael James, Editor of the
Independent |
|
As you have read in The
Independent last month, the
South Florida Chapter of The NAMES Project lost the South Florida panels of the AIDS Quilt to the main
chapter in Atlanta. This occurred due to financial restraints. I am hoping to
involve as many nightclubs, bars, restaurants and other venues to help in a
series of fundraisers near the end of May. The NAMES Project is a volunteer
organization and the funds they need are to store the Quilt in a climate
controlled facility once it has been returned to South Florida (at a cost of
about $50 per panel). Those who are interested in helping this valued
organization, please contact me at the numbers below. The Independent
will promote any fundraising event for the NAMES Project in conjunction with
this effort and we will assist in creating advertisements for other publications
that wishes to help. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from
you.
Sincerely, Michael James
