Miami Gay
and Lesbian Film Festival |
|

The 8th Annual
Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
(MGLFF) will pay tribute to one of the most prolific independent film
distributors in the United States . . . TLA Entertainment Group.
The event will take place Saturday, April 22,
7:00pm
at the Colony Theatre, just prior to the premiere screening of the TLA
Releasing’s musical 20 Centimeters directed by Ramón Salazar.
Founder and President of TLA Entertainment Group, Raymond Murray will be
in attendance along with Claire Brown Kohler (COO), Richard Wolf
(Acquisitions & Marketing Director), Eric Moore (Chief Technology
Officer) and Patrick Murray (Vice President). Celebrating their 25th
Anniversary, the
Philadelphia
based TLA Entertainment Group has been the driving force behind legitimizing gay
and lesbian cinema. TLA, which stands for Theater of the Living Arts, was
originally founded as an experimental theatre group in the 1960's under the
direction of Andre Gregory (of My Dinner with Andre fame) and
included actors Danny DeVito, Judd Hirsch, Sally Kirkland and Ron Leibman.
In 1971 the venue was converted to a repertory cinema presenting International,
Independent and cult films. The cinema closed in 1980 but, in 1981 several
former employees (including the current partners today) bought the cinema and
re-opened it as a nationally recognized venue with a vision to bring all types
of cinema
to
film lovers. In 1985, TLA opened their first video store next door and today,
TLA boasts of five locations in Philadelphia with a sixth in Manhattan's West
Village. And, over the last 25 years, TLA Entertainment Group has quietly been
expanding through its catalog, retail store and licensing businesses and have
grown to be the leading retailer of gay and lesbian films with its
well-trafficked site
www.tlavideo.com In 2001, TLA
Entertainment Group launched their theatrical distribution arm, TLA Releasing,
dedicated to broadening the choices available to film lovers by specializing in
quality independent, international and gay/lesbian-themed films by distributing
them in theaters and on home video. TLA Releasing, today, distributes
International and American films in North America and United Kingdom. Many are
multiple-award winners or nominees, such as France’s A Matter of Taste
(five César nominations),
Spain’s
800 Bullets (four Goya Awards) and the
United States’
The Trip (13 various festival awards). Additionally, many films
are crowd pleasers, like the immensely popular Latter Days, the
critically acclaimed Bear Cub, and the spicy Spanish comedy
Km. 0 (Kilometer Zero). They also organize two of the most
prestigious film festivals in the U.S.; the
Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
and The Philadelphia International Film Festival. And, edit two books:
The "TLA Film Video & DVD Guide: A Discerning Film Lover's Guide"
released annually each Fall by St. Martin's Press and the company's
founder and president, Raymond Murray’s "Images in the Dark: An Encyclopedia
of Gays and Lesbians in Film and Video."

Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network of
South Florida
News |
|
As it begins expansion of its anti-bullying educator training
programs into all four counties in
South Florida,
the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network of
South Florida
(GLSEN South Florida) is pleased to announce the addition of
three new members to its board of directors, including 17-year
old Joshua Delsman, a student at McFatter Technical
High School. "We think it's critically important to have
student representation on our board," said Bruce Presley,
board president. "Josh Delsman is a bright young man who knows
what it's like to be a gay person at school. He brings a
real-life, 21st century student's perspective to our board."
Delsman is also the founder and president of a successful web
design company and a southern regional coordinator of the GLSEN
National Jump-Start Leadership Team. Educators Clarence
Brooks and Donald Stansfield will assume various
responsibilities helping GLSEN South Florida achieve its mission
of insuring safe schools for all
South Florida
students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,
real or perceived. Brooks, who for eight years taught dance at
Bak Middle High School for the Arts in West Palm Beach,
is currently a visiting assistant professor of dance at
Florida Atlantic University. He has had experience with
other GLSEN chapters in the past. Stansfield is a drama teacher
at Coral Springs Charter School in Broward County where
he is also faculty advisor to the school's Gay/Straight Alliance
(GSA). Before moving to
Florida
he acted professionally in
New York.
Both educators will take leadership roles in training teachers
and counselors and coordinating GSA-related programs in
Palm Beach
and Broward respectively, according to Presley. "Clarence's
familiarity with the county school district will enhance GLSEN
South Florida's ability to work effectively in Palm Beach
County," said Presley. "Donald Stansfield is an outstanding
teacher and will be a great addition to our team." Stansfield
recently coordinated the first GLSEN South Florida youth
empowerment conference held in Ft. Lauderdale on Mar. 24. GLSEN
South Florida is the only student advocacy and education
organization in South Florida focused exclusively on schools and
made up of professional educators and students who train other
educators and students on how to create a safe school
environment for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or
gender identity, real or perceived. More information about GLSEN
is available online at www.glsensouthflorida.org or by

Love Peace & Hope at
Saks Fifth Avenue |
Designer-to-the-stars
Udi Behr will launch two symbolic jewelry collections; Love & Pride™
and Love Peace & Hope at Saks Fifth Avenue with a champagne celebration on Friday,
March 31st from
5-8:00 PM. Saks in
Fort Lauderdale will be the first mainstream department store to carry a luxury
jewelry line supporting the gay & lesbian community. Udi Behr declares the
event a "small step for retailers, colossal step for equal civil rights. "About
Love & Pride Behr, whose ingenious jewelry has been worn by top celebrities
including Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Sharon Stone, and carried by Saks
and high-end jewelry stores, took action when San Francisco Mayor Gavin
Newsom, courageously granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples during
the summer of 2004. “I decided I had to do something, and as a jewelry
designer, the natural thing was to create a new collection.” After approaching
leading jewelry retailers with the Love &
Pride concept, and being turned down repeatedly, Behr initiated the
launch of
www.loveandpride.com with the help of $2.5 million raised from a team of
investors with the same vision. It has become a community-based retail web
destination featuring the entire Love & Pride collection along with
thought-provoking resources for gays and lesbians interested in marriage and
commitment. Udi Behr is utilizing his collections to express strong
convictions. Prior to Love & Pride, the designer developed Love+Peace+Hope to
reflect the spirit of generosity after 9/11, gaining international attention at
the 2003 Oscars. Working to secure civil marriage rights for gays and lesbians
has become the activist’s newest focus; he now donates 10% of proceeds from the
Love and Pride collection to Marriage Equality, a non-profit leader in
the fight for equal marriage rights for all. Love & Pride Collection features
rings, necklaces, bracelets, and accessories to fit every budget, from $30 to
$5,000. Available in 18K gold, stainless steel, two-toned combinations,
diamonds, and exquisite accents; Udi caters to every client’s style. Designs
include same sex motif rings that join as a whole, a double lariat loop necklace
ending in gold hand-cuffs, and a contemporary black stainless steel pendant
featuring interchangeable male/female insignias. These cutting-edge pieces
inspire a sincere emotion in support of the gay and lesbian community.
