Last
Week Wrapped Up |
|
Last Tuesday there were 2 events aimed at raising money for local
charities. They were a holiday stocking auction at Rosie's,
a benefit for Care Resource, and the annual toy drive
at Bill's Filling Station.
Both events were very well
attended, thousands of dollars were raised for local charities
and loads of toys were donated. Kudos to the GLBT community
for coming out year after year and supporting these incredible
functions.
The
6th Annual BOOM Christmas wreath auction on Wednesday
Dec 13th was another huge success. This event raised over
$8,260 in cash for Kids in Distress. All this money
came from generous donations from customers and business',
employees and entertainer tips, and sales from the club. Owners
Craig and Tim would like to thank all those who help make
this event a pride for our community including everyone who made
a wreath or bought a wreath, all the entertainers, and the staff
for their generous donations.
Friday, December 15th
was the first Art Walk in WilMa and by all accounts it
was a huge success. Hundreds of art enthusiasts took to the
streets of Wilton Manors and strolled through shops full of
Holiday cheer. Many local artists were on hand along with
gallery owners. Wine and cheese was offered along the way and
shops stayed open until the crowds disappeared.
I then headed over to China White for Fagtabulous
Fridays. It was bartender Victor's last night
before his move to New York City and I wanted to say goodbye. DJ
Chaos was cranking it, the drinks were flowing and the crowd
was soaking it all up. By the way, if you're in New York,
Victor (aka Damien Crosse) will have his own night at
Splash Bar every Wednesday beginning January 10th.

Carnival
Center-Chivas Regal Jazz Series |
|
Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band, part of the Carnival
Center-Chivas Regal Jazz Series, will perform in
Miami’s
Carnival Center for the Performing Arts for one night only on
Friday, December 29, at
8 p.m. in the Center’s magnificent Knight Concert Hall.
For more than 35 years, filmmaker and clarinet player Woody
Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band have been delighting
audiences in New York City with a hot mix of New
Orleans-inspired music and will make a special stop on their
first multi-city tour around the United States to perform for
fans in Miami. The band’s sound is firmly rooted in the music
that Woody Allen has loved since his childhood and draws
inspiration from such legendary artists as Sidney Bechet,
George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone and, of course,
Louis Armstrong. Beginning as informal jam sessions and then
becoming regular concerts every Monday night, the band has
performed for thousands of New Yorkers and visitors from all
over the world. For the last decade, the group has been
regularly playing once a week at the
Manhattan
landmark hotel, The Carlyle. Allen even missed accepting
an Academy Award for Annie
Hall so as not to miss his Monday night gig. In
1996, the band embarked on its first tour of Europe and was
chronicled in the documentary film
Wild Man Blues
and subsequent compact disc titled under the same. Since then,
the band has returned to Europe on numerous occasions, most
recently performing in Greece and Turkey. An accomplished
clarinet player, Allen says of performing live: “There's
nothing there between you and the pure feeling of playing.
There's no cerebral part to it.” The New Orleans Jazz Band
includes musical director Eddy Davis on the banjo;
Conal Fowkes on piano; Simon Wettenhall on trumpet;
Jerry Zigmont on trombone, Greg Cohen on bass, and
John Gill on drums. Tickets are $15-95 and are available
online at

Gwen Stefani Instinct
Cover Girl
|
|
Instinct,
the largest gay men’s magazine, today announced an exclusive
national gay press interview with top female recording artist
Gwen Stefani. Gwen will grace the cover of Instinct for the
second time with the January 2007 issue, where she fields the
publication’s trademark brand of tongue-in-cheek questions
dealing with her new album, the reunion of No Doubt and
her handsome husband, Gavin Rossdale. This continues
Instinct’s string of back-to-back high-profile exclusive
interviews, following singer Beyonce Knowles in December and
Project Runway’s Tim Gunn in November. Gwen Stefani spoke with
Instinct over other national gay magazines since the publication
has become known for its hip and young audience, and as such
continues to scoop other gay national press known more for their
aging demographics. It’s this combination of trendy readership
and cutting-edge, award winning editorial that continues to draw
top celebrities to Instinct’s pages. Already a popular figure in
the GLBT community herself, Stefani discusses the influence
another gay icon, Cyndi Lauper, had on her while growing
up. “Aside from the great songs and the great look, she gave
you something that came from an outsider’s point of view,”
Gwen says. “She knew what was left of center, and she made it
okay for young girls like myself at that time to connect with
that within themselves.” Gwen also playfully pondered what
life would be like with a career as a drag queen rather than a
multimillion-selling recording artist. “My act would cover a
wide range of styles, from early ska/reggae classics to Broadway
classics and a couple ‘80s dance tunes,” she explains. “Don’t
forget the red lipstick and the platinum blonde hair! Oh, and
great backlighting. Always great backlighting.” Other
features in Instinct’s January issue include one man’s journey
back to post-Katrina
New Orleans,
a look undercover at the underbelly of the ex-gay movement and a
humorous essay that asks just how much your mom really needs to
know about your sex life. Additionally, the supplement Gay
Travel News appears in the January issue, along with a spotlight
on Dallas, Texas, and interviews with Dancing with the Stars’
Lisa Rinna, legendary comic Phyllis Diller, out Hip
hop artist Cazwell and Quinceañera’s Jesse Garcia. |

Bears from
Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus |
|
—
Bears — the teddy bear kind, that is — were in
great abundance recently, as the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s
Chorus spread some goodwill and season’s greetings at a
local children’s hospital and two nursing/rehabilitation
centers. And even more gifts, good food and fellowship followed
in a recent chorus-hosted dinner for families who include
clients of Broward House, which provides an array of
services to those living with and at risk for HIV and other
health issues. “All through the year, the chorus strives to
give back to our community by performing at a variety of worthy
events,” said Todd Wiley, FTLGMC director. “Frankly,
we’re invited to so many that unfortunately can’t sing at every
one. But especially during the holiday season, our
members go
the extra mile to share their joy of music and the spirit of the
season.” Along with its traditional closing-act performance
on the main stage of the popular Christmas on Las Olas event,
the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus began its Advent season by
singing carols at three locations and distributing scores of
stuffed animals that chorus members had donated. Young patients
at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in
Hollywood
and residents of Broward Nursing and Rehabilitation in
Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Court Nursing Home in Wilton
Manors enthusiastically welcomed the visiting performers,
appreciating the stuffed animals, the lively carols and, most
importantly, the spirit of goodwill behind it all. “We
consider ourselves truly blessed to be welcomed so openly in
these and other community venues, as the chorus becomes
increasingly well-known and respected for its musical
excellence, professionalism and community service,” said
Ross Carson, FTLGMC president. “In a thank-you note, a
nurse manager at the Children’s Hospital said that ‘Your songs
brought warmth into all of our hearts and definitely brought
forth the Christmas Spirit for our patients, their families and
our staff.’ We were proud to be told we were welcome back
anytime. “I’m frankly not sure which of us got more from
these experiences — those we visited or those of us who were
welcomed in,”
Carson
continued. A week before the chorus’ Dec. 19 Holiday Concert at
the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the group hosted a
dinner, gifts, holiday arts and crafts, a visit by Santa and
singing for families from the Broward House. Held at the chorus’
home base, the Sunshine Cathedral, the afternoon was
another highlight of the volunteer singing group’s holiday
season. For more information on Broward House, see its web site
at

New Info from
Carnival
Center |
Carnival
Center for the Performing Arts will present
Navidad Gitana, a spectacular fully-staged family
musical, direct from
Colombia,
with more than 60 actors, singers, and dancers in a colorful
fantasy about secret treasures, medieval gypsies, and fearless
adventurers. Performed entirely in Spanish, with English
subtitles, Navidad Gitana
will be at Carnival Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House December
21 through 23. In Miami for the first time,
Navidad Gitana is
an original Broadway-style musical created by Colombia’s
longest-running musical theater company, Misi Compañía de
Teatro Musical. Fun for the entire family, the story begins
in the middle Ages with the shipwreck of the
Alcañiz, which
takes a secret treasure with it as it descends to the bottom of
the ocean. The sole survivors - a sailor (Antonio) and a young
boy (Martín) - are rescued by gypsies and brought to town, which
is where the adventure really begins. Special effects, costumes,
and elaborate dance numbers transform the stage into a holiday
fantasy land in which fairies dance among the unicorns, mice
skate with polar bears, and harlequins parade around with Santa
Claus in a story about love, passion, and the true spirit of
Christmas. The book and lyrics for
Navidad Gitana
were created by the beloved Maria Isabel “Misi” Murillo,
founder of Misi Compañía de Teatro Musical, in collaboration
with Arturo Tovar. The production is directed and
choreographed by Rob Barron. Adult tickets range from
$15-$55 and child tickets range from $15-$27.50. Tickets are
available online at
www.carnivalcenter.org or (305) 949-6722. For group tickets
(20 or more), contact (786) 468-2326. |

Gunz Reloads |

MenOnTheNet.com, the Web’s leading directory of gay erotic websites, and all-male
adult producer Gunzblazing have partnered to unveil a new
gay stud website. During the initial launch phase, the all-male
hardcore site will be promoted exclusively by the directory,
located at
http://www.MenOnTheNet.com. “We’ve searched the world to
present the finest-looking and best-hung muscle studs found
anywhere,” says Gunzblazing’s owner, Brian Randall.
“With these men, we have discovered truly fresh talent. Of
course, they are the key element that will bring plenty of
attention to this brand new site. Bang Bang Boys will offer
scores of these handsome & exciting men captured in stunning
photo galleries, shot-on-location videos and live chat photo
galleries…all up-dated weekly. Members will also get full access
to three bonus sites.” “We always strive to bring our
members the very best in male erotic content on the Net coupled
with the industry’s top technology,” explains Randall. “Our
latest effort targets the heart of the gay adult market with the
very hottest guys we can find. By teaming exclusively with
MenOnTheNet.com during the earliest portion of the site’s public
unveiling we’ve virtually assured that the site will sky-rocket.” Sneak
peeks of the new muscled male site are available only via
MenOnTheNet.com – known by the apt slogan, The Yellow Pages
of Gay Porn. Contrary to the conventional wisdom of a
broad-brush ad campaign, Randall explains the exclusive approach
of the premiere’s promotional plan with the directory. “MenOnTheNet.com
was one of Gunzblazing's first affiliate partners and since then
has generated many thousands of sign-ups,” he says. “The
quality and volume of qualified traffic that MenOnTheNet.com can
generate is exceptional. We fully expect to see the same for
our new site!” To get the earliest exclusive glimpses of the
new website from Gunzblazing, visit
