Last
Week Wrapped Up |
|
Friday
night, Art Center South Florida was overflowing with enthusiasts in town
for Art Basel. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this mega event has
propelled
Miami into the limelight of the international arts scene. Art Basel started in
Switzerland and is recognized around the world as the single most important
annual show. Art Basel Miami, now in its fifth year has eclipsed virtually every
other event in importance, except the original.
Also
taking place Friday night, a little further down
Lincoln Road, was
Edison Farrow's weekly drag show,
Cabaret.
The show is followed by Funky Fridays starring DJ Leo and some of the
hottest guys on the beach. You can enjoy a fabulous dinner, watch the show and
then hang around as the staff turns
Funkshion
from a restaurant into a chic lounge. Stop by next Friday and tell
Edison, Scott sent you!
After
the show at Funkshion we headed over to a private party at Twilo
sponsored by 10Cane Rum. Invitations to this party could be downloaded
only on Mark's List and not through any other Gay South Florida publication or
website. With an open bar and
no cover, this was a Mark's List exclusive! On hand were
Madonna's kid brother Chris Ciccone, photographer Robert Risse, Elaine
Lancaster and Ivan Enriquez among others. There were performances
by Cirq X, Natasha Tsakos and the Wakeup Dream, Danielo de la Torre and
David Rhone. On the turntable were Kaskade and Ariel Baum.
Watch Mark's List as we continue to bring you the inside information and invites
to more of these exclusive events!
On
Saturday December 9th the
Coliseum celebrated its 7th anniversary with DJ Tracy Young
at the Helm of the turntables. In addition there were shows by TP Lords,
Victoria Sky’s and Erika Norell. Recording Artist Amuka
surprised the Coliseum by doing an unscheduled song from the DJ Booth. We here
at Marks list would like to wish Brett, Paul, Gary and the entire
Coliseum staff a happy anniversary and many more to come!
Sunday,
it was back to
Miami
for the Scope art show which took place in the Wynwood Arts District
near downtown Miami and the new Midtown. Scope is one of several shows
that make up Art Basel. For many emerging artists, shows like Scope, Flow, Ink,
Diva and Aqua can stimulate interest and propel them onto the arts scene. For
established artists, sales made at these shows often sustain them throughout the
year and allow them the creative freedom they need to survive without financial
worries. Pictured is Angelo Musco (brown shirt) prospective buyers. |

A New Way to
Search |
|
 |
|
Imagine a company that uses technology to help power
more than 20,000 nonprofits, charities, religious
organizations and schools. That’s the premise of
GoodSearch, a Yahoo!-powered search engine that donates
about 50 percent of gross revenue received from online
advertisers to nonprofits nationwide. Just by
searching the net via
www.goodsearch.com,
users raise money for their preselected organization.
“Search engines generated $6 billion in revenue last
year, and that’s the revenue that we share with the
nonprofits,” says Ken Ramberg, 41, who launched the Los
Angeles company last November with his sister, JJ, 35. Blogs and
message boards are abuzz with talk of GoodSearch, which
makes it possible to view, in real time, the amount of
money raised for individual organizations. Says Ramberg,
“GoodSearch is really the perfect conversion of [using]
technology to effortlessly help a wide variety of
causes. I'm now using GoodSearch.com to search the
Internet. Every time I do, money goes to my favorite
charity (which is the Pet Project). I hope you'll give
it a try and support the cause that you care most about.
Just enter
"pet project" in the Who do you
GoodSearch For where is says
"enter your charity
here...", and the screen will display
the options linked to this when you press the
verify button. You can then select
[Pet Project - Pet
Project for Pets (Oakland
Park, FL)]
The site is powered by Yahoo!, so you'll get the same
quality search results that you're used to. What's
unique is that they have developed a way to direct money
to your charity or school with every click. The more
people who use this site, the more money will go to
those in need. So please spread the word to your friends
and family.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s
Chorus Holds
Auditions |
|
 |
|
The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus
will hold auditions for new singing members on Saturday,
Jan. 6 as the chorus begins preparations for the
exciting world premiere of the concert version of a new
musical. The show, titled “Imagine This,” is the story
of a troupe of courageous actors trapped in a Warsaw
ghetto during World War II who perform a love story set
2,000 years ago. As its creators poignantly describe it:
“Two worlds, two sets of characters...one story about
making impossible choices in the name of love.” “Imagine
This” will be presented at the Fifth-Annual South
Florida Choral Festival, presented and hosted by the
FTLGMC on Saturday, Feb. 24 beginning at 8 p.m. in the
Amaturo Theatre of the Broward Center for the Performing
Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave., downtown Fort
Lauderdale. In addition to the Gay Men’s Chorus, the
production will feature the Sunshine Cathedral Choir and
women from the University of Miami School of Music.
Auditions will be held Jan. 6 in the music suite (second
floor, education annex) of the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480
SW 9th Ave. Persons interested in auditioning
should arrive no later than 1 p.m. and bring a piece of
sheet music with which to audition — anything from a
simple folk or pop song to as complex as an Italian
aria. An accompanist will be provided. Pre-registration
is not required. Persons interested in joining the
chorus as a singing member but who are unable to attend
the scheduled audition should call the chorus’ voice
mail at (954) 832-0060. Special arrangements will be
made when possible. The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus
rehearses weekly on Wednesdays from
7:30 to
10:30
p.m. at the Sunshine Cathedral. |

Allan Pierce |
|
Gazing upon our subtropical landscape, Allan Pierce
is drawn to the ravages of destruction in the wake of
progress. Yet each tableau in this series evokes the
triumphant spirit of nature in the midst of
architectural annihilation. Commenting with a vibrantly
colorful, if final, perspective on these cityscapes, the
images are graphically audacious and engaging. After
his first exhibit of homoerotic photography at Soho
Photo Gallery in
New
York,
Pierce chronicled the decimation of formerly grand
theatre facades in one-man exhibitions including Coming
Attractions and Forgotten Theaters. Additionally, Pierce
both directed and acted in performance pieces in New
York galleries and alternative venues including the
Amos Eno Gallery, Franklin Furnace, the Old Town Bar and
Restaurant, the Performing Garage and the Ward-Nasse
Gallery. Allan Pierce also co-owned and was the
artistic director of the Strand Theatre in Schroon Lake,
New York, where he ran summer arts festivals. While
Pierce was pursuing a doctorate in avant-garde
performance at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he
was a founding member of Michael Kirby’s
Structuralist Workshop. In this current show, the
juxtaposition of nature’s constant renaissance with the
ghosts of a previous architectural vibrancy combine to
form an ultimately concordant setting, displaying both
the beauty and order in seeming chaos. These images of
structures, often captured in the final moments before
the wrecking ball, are at once elegiac and celebratory.

Heymann’s thoughtful film Paper Dolls is a
poignant true story about a group of care-givers, living
in Tel Aviv, who have built new lives for themselves
after being cast out of their families because of their
sexual orientation. While millions of people throughout
the world have made and built new lives for themselves
as illegal immigrants, only Israel, has a population of
illegal Filipinos of indeterminate gender caring for
elderly Orthodox men. Often working around the clock,
feeding, washing, shopping for their employers,
steadfast and warm relationships have been built over
time. One evening a week, in their downtime, the
caregivers come together to appear as a drag queen
ensemble Paper Dolls. Intentionally programmed on
the cusp of Hannukah Paper Dolls is revealing,
surprising and engaging to the end. Redefining
conventional notions of gender, family and love, they

lauding winners, written by the publications' editors,

Key West is the elevated approach to the island
city along U.S. 1."

FTL
MODA will launch the concept of a greater Fort
Lauderdale-based International Fashion Week, a concept
unique in the United States, Jan. 25-28, 2007. This
4-day event is a “mini” version of what will be
presented annually starting in 2008. FTLMODA.com
will carry designer information, schedule updates,
promotional materials for media and information on
tickets and passes. FTL MODA will flaunt the
hottest European, Latin and Caribbean designers in front
of the American fashion scene and expose Fort Lauderdale
to the international marketplace. Each of the 15
featured designers has been hand selected to premiere
fresh, full Spring 2008 collections. Available will be
haute couture for women and men, resort wear, swimwear,
children’s wear, accessories, jewelry and footwear. FTL
MODA will redefine couture for the 21st century by
returning it to the people. Fashionistas and rank and
file alike will have the same opportunity to purchase
directly at the event. Each showcase will go directly
from the runway to the showroom, each of the more than
350 pieces from the model to a purchaser. Each design
will be one-of-a-kind, cosmopolitan couture, constructed
for immediate consumption.
FTL MODA will inspire a series of select cultural
events in addition to two days of world-class fashion:
an exposition by celebrated sculptural artist Massimo
Sansavini, the American debut of Italian musical
sensations Studio 3 and the Mandolin Brothers,
a Venetian Carnival-themed opening event, a classical
concert by renowned orchestral group I Solisti Veneti,
