Alfred Phillips at
Art Expressions Gallery
|
|
Alfred Phillips has been nurturing his talent for as long as he can remember, but his
formal introduction to art began with a full scholarship to the Art Center
School in his native
Louisville. Phillips moved to
Florida in October of 2003 fulfilling his life-long dream of having his own
painting studio. Alfred prefers painting with acrylics as oils are too slow for
his liking.
His
work begins by quickly sketching ideas on paper relying on imagination, personal
observation and memory. He may paint directly on the canvas without sketching or
he may painstakingly draw the image in exact detail. Alfred Phillips has
received more art prizes and accolades than most artist accrue over a lifetime.
The artist won eleven awards in one year alone, including four Best In Show
awards. In the Broward Art Guild’s 55 years of existence, no artist had
won first and second place prizes in the same show until he took honors in
landscape and still life categories in 2004. The art community in South Florida
is happy to know that Alfred Phillips is still around and Never Gone. Art
Expressions Gallery proudly invites you to join them through November
27th at 1212 NE 4th Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival Center for the Performing Arts and
Concert Association of
Florida |

Carnival Center for the Performing Arts and Concert Association of
Florida (CAF) jointly announced today the appointment of
Albert Milano as chief executive officer of Concert Association of Florida.
Milano has worked closely with the Carnival Center Foundation over the past ten
years, including the past two years in which he has served full-time as
executive director of the Carnival Center Foundation. “Al has been
tremendously instrumental in the success of Carnival Center’s capital campaign
and recent grand opening,”
said Sherwood “Woody” Weiser, chairman of the
Foundation’s board. “Now, with the Center successfully launched, we feel
this is a wonderful opportunity for him, the Concert Association and the Center.”
In his new role at CAF, Milano will work in partnership with Judy Drucker,
president and artistic director of CAF, to develop increased support for CAF’s
presentations and strengthen the financial health of the organization. Judy
Drucker commented, “I’ve admired greatly for the past few years the wonderful
work that Al Milano has done, and we are absolutely delighted that he will be
joining us.” Bob Hudson, chairman of the CAF board, added "The
combination of Al’s extensive national experience and past success here in
South Florida will give us a tremendous new asset as we move into
Carnival
Center and
the important new opportunities this presents to us." Milano’s experience in the performing arts began at the
Dallas Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s where he rose to the position of
managing director. He subsequently managed the Dallas Theater Center and
Cleveland Play House before joining C.W. Shaver & Company, a
leader in fundraising in the performing
arts. Subsequently, he formed the firm of Milano, Ruff and Associates,
which counted the Performing Arts Center Foundation of Greater Miami as
one of its clients. He was founding producer of the Dallas Jazz Festival
and producer of various concert and theater series in different parts of the
nation. “This is definitely a win-win-win situation for Al,
Carnival Center and the Concert Association,” said Michael Hardy, president and CEO of Carnival
Center. “Al is one of the best people in his field in the country, and we
believe that he and Judy Drucker will be a great team which will not only
stabilize CAF’s historically challenged finances, but take it to new heights as
a major resident company here at the Center.” In addition to his work with
CAF, Milano will continue to consult with the Carnival Center Foundation on
matters such as annual and endowment fundraising.
Michael Hardy, president and CEO of Carnival Center for the Performing
Arts, announced today the appointment of Richard G. Miller to vice
president of development. Miller had served as associate director of the
Performing Arts Center Foundation since 2002. Reporting directly to Michael
Hardy, Miller’s responsibilities as vice president of development include the
management of the Center’s fund-raising programs, including the endowment drive,
membership program and all other fund-raising activities, as well as the
supervision of the Center’s development staff. “Rich has been an enormous
asset to the Center over the past four years. The expertise he has gained over
his 40-year career as a professional fund raiser and his deep roots in the
South Florida community have been and will continue to be invaluable to the Center’s
development activities. We are pleased to welcome him to this new position at
Carnival Center,” said Hardy. Since 1966, Miller has specialized in providing
effective and efficient fund development for non-profit organizations, including
many arts and educational institutions. Prior to joining
Carnival Center, Miller was
an independent fund-raising consultant as well as vice president of the NY-based
consulting firm C.W. Shaver and Company. During that time, he served a
number of high-profile arts clients, including Wolf Trap Foundation for the
Performing Arts,
Kraviz Center for the Performing Arts,
Gusman
Center for
the Performing Arts,
and Goodwood Museum and
Gardens. During his career, Miller has held senior development positions at
Nova Southeastern University, Center for the Fine Arts (now the
Miami Art Museum),
University
of Miami,
Case
Western Reserve
University, and
Philadelphia College of Art. Miller holds an MBA from the Kellogg School
of Management at Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from

Poster Boy |
Headstrong college
student Henry is the son of U.S. Senator Jack Kray (Michael Lerner),
a right-wing politician in an intense reelection battle. Henry’s disgusted
with his father, yet unwilling to come out of the closet. Enter Anthony (Jack
Noseworthy), an angry, boyish queer activist, and his lovelorn roommate,
Izzie (Valerie Geffner). One evening, in search of distraction, the
pair crashes a party on Henry’s campus. There, Anthony has sex with Henry —
and finds himself wanting much more. Yet after discovering Henry’s identity,
Anthony joins forces with a campus activist group plotting to disrupt the
senator’s upcoming appearance. Through a jolting twist of fate, Izzie
becomes ingratiated within the Krays’ ranks, bonding with the gentile
matriarch, Eunice (Karen Allen). Sure enough, all these crossed wires
lead to an explosive, jaw-dropping, surprise-filled climax wherein family,
love and honesty are put to the test. This is extremely timely thanks to
easily drawn parallels between Mary Cheney and Henry Kray
Poster
Boy is also a stylistic valentine to New Queer Cinema’s heyday and
the ACT-UP era's gay activism. Performances are across-the-board
powerful — Lerner seethes vileness as the hypocritical senator, and
Noseworthy and
Newton bring intricacies to their complex characters. It’s Geffner, though,
who will shatter you with her profound, star-making turn.

Stonewall
Archives Receives Kameny Pickets |
|
The Stonewall
Library and Archives has received six rare picket signs used in protests of
the White House and Pentagon by the early gay rights pioneer Dr. Frank Kameny.
The prestigious gift was made to the Stonewall Library and Archives shortly
after the longtime activist presented more than 70,000 letters, documents and
memorabilia to Library of Congress and The Smithsonian's National
Museum of American History in an October 6 ceremony (www.kamenypapers.org).
Dr. Kameny's personal papers are destined for the Manuscript Division of the
Library of Congress, and several rare protest and picket signs are to be made
part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of
American History. The remainder of his collection is to be donated to gay and
lesbian archives across the nation. Stonewall Archives received six of the
remaining pickets, along with several other rare posters, magazines and
pamphlets from the early 1960's. Dr. Kameny's gift to the Stonewall Archives
will be presented at Stonewall's Heritage Gala on November 18,
where Kameny will be honored. Dr. Kameny was selected as this year's recipient
of the Stonewall Heritage Award, given annually to an individual who has
contributed significantly to national GLBT Culture. Tickets to the Gala are $100
and may be purchased at the Stonewall Library and Archives, 1717 N. Andrews
Avenue in

Centaur Announces New
Distribution Deal With Candystorecords
|
|
Through
a newly signed distribution deal with CANDYSTORECORDS, Inc., Centaur
is excited to announce the upcoming release of "Showstoppers," the first
volume from the much anticipated new CD series entitled MightyREAL, A
Dance Floor Retrospective: 1980-1988. Each MightyREAL CD is a
collection of hard-to-find, original 12-inch disco/dance classics that ignited
and fueled the 'Gay disco experience' two decades ago. Centaur will release
"Showstoppers" nationwide on November 28. In the early 80's, folks went
out dancing two to three nights a week - regularly. "This is what we
did"
says CANDYSTORECORDS co-founder David Kane. "Dance music was
everything and we lived for the mix. There was a vibrant national club scene
set to a fabulous soundtrack, which today, is nowhere to be found." "People
don't forget a wonderful night out," David adds, "and they don't forget
songs with that great je ne se quois. It gets in them.
No
one has yet properly gathered up these songs, procured and meticulously
remastered every track, then made them available on a series of high quality
CDs, That's what MightyREAL is offering, - the memorable REAL dance floor hits
that ruled the night, not the mainstream stuff heard on radio."
"Showstoppers," the first volume in the
MightyREAL series, is
a collection of stand-alone songs that consistently drew folks to the dance
floor by offering a little something
extra. Whether through an outstanding musical
hook, a compelling story line, or good old fascinatin' rhythm; these songs
grabbed everyone for a communal ride. Once on the ride, that rare place of
living inside a song was visited. "Centaur's Dance products and distributed
Dance titles are strong in tradition," says Centaur's Chief Operating
Officer Jamie Baxter. "Adding the Disco titles from CANDYSTORECORDS
to our label will definitely enhance our overall catalog, the most extensive in
the Dance genre for labels tageting the GLBT community."
A
complete press release one "MightyREAL:
Showstoppers" will be issued within the week. If you are interested in
receiving a review copy, please respond with your complete mailing information.
The next two volumes of MightyREAL are: "The Queens' Music 1";
cute, snappy, hit tracks from the mid-80's British dance music re-invasion, and
"Morning Music"; a plateau of big, down-tempo songs heard towards the end
of the night. Both albums are scheduled to be released in the next few months.
CANDYSTORECORDS is an artistically driven, independent boutique label, founded
and headquartered in New York City. The focus of the label is in crafting
unique CD compilation projects, drawing from numerous and diverse sources, and
selecting a repertoire from the deep vaults and dusty corners of eagerly
participating record labels.
The
mission of CANDYSTORECORDS is to entertain discerning ears with infinite aural
delight. Centaur is a New York-based entertainment
company that raises money and awareness for philanthropies that fight for and
protect human rights. Centaur accomplishes this by producing quality benefit
compilation CDs while preserving the right of musicians and producers by using
only licensed music. Centaur garnered a Grammy Award nomination for its Boy
George song, "When Will You Learn," and produced the tremendously
successful "Dance With Angels" AIDS benefit album featuring songs from
Madonna, Janet Jackson, Sting, Aretha Franklin & Gloria Estefan. Through
music, Centaur has proudly contributed $1.7 million in cash and product to help
charitable organizations serve our community. |
