In an effort to continue promoting the story of the Great American Songbook, Bob Lappin and The Palm Beach Pops have included a new chapter with new characters in their first-of-its-kind “Contemporary Composers” concert series, celebrating works by some of America’s most beloved contemporary composers including Barry Manilow, Michele LeGrande, Billy Joel, John Lennon, Paul McCartney & John Williams.  Unlike other “books” – this one is a never-ending story. The Great American Songbook refers to the music of Broadway musical theater, the Hollywood musical, and Tin Pan Alley, in a period that begins roughly in the 1920s and tapers off around 1960 with the coming of rock and roll. Some of the classic songwriters associated with the Songbook include Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Duke Ellington. A few of the performers include Ella Fitzgerald, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Mel Tormé. In addition, many of this season’s performers with the Palm Beach Pops are the exciting new up-and-comers of our generation. Gary Mauer, nationally known singer, will perform some of Manilow’s most popular hits such as Copacabana, I Write the Songs, Mandy and Can’t Smile Without You at the “Contemporary Composers” concerts. Gary Mauer most recently starred in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, playing the leading role of Raoul. This series will also feature the winner of the first-ever Palm Beach PopStar competition.  Bob Lappin and the Palm Beach Pops will open with their “Contemporary Composers” concert series on November 8 and 9 at 8:00 p.m. at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. Tickets are $25 to $85 and available by calling 561.832.7469 or visiting www.palmbeachpops.org. The series continues on November 10, 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. at the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Center for the Arts at FAU in Boca Raton. Tickets are $27 to $65 and are available by calling 800.564.9539 or visiting www.palmbeachpops.org. For additional information, call 561.832.7677 or visit www.palmbeachpops.org. With this on-going tale to be told, The Palm Beach Pops will continue collaborating from many angles to bring the story of the Great American Songbook to South Florida for all ages to enjoy and appreciate.

Suzanne Westenhoefer

The Laugh Out Loud comedy series brings the first of several Comedians to South Florida this season. Funny girl, Suzanne Westenhoefer will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 9th, in the Aldo New River Room of the Broward Performing Arts Center along with special guest, Daisy Deadpetals, the hardest working queen in the business. Fearless, Bold, Sparkly, and Hilarious, that’s Suzanne Westenhoefer in a nutshell. She’s made a career out of telling the truth. And, the truth is, life is funny (and no one is off limits). Suzanne tells stories that leave audiences in stitches. Suzanne works mostly unscripted, so when she hits the stage it’s an unpredictable, original night of comedy magic. Since winning her first comedy competition on a dare in the early 1990s, Suzanne’s career has taken off. Suzanne stars nightly on the GSN’s remake of the classic game show, “I’ve Got a Secret,” entertaining audiences as the “token girl” on a hilarious all-gay panel with ex-Major League Baseball player Billy Bean, radio icon Frank DeCaro and Broadway’s Jermaine Taylor. Notable television appearances include “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “HBO Comedy Special”, “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher,” “Evening at the Improv,” “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” “Arli$$” and more. Her live comedy special “A Night at the Village” runs on LOGO and Bravo. She frequently appears as a commentator on E!, VH1 and Country Music Television. Her life in comedy was chronicled in the documentary “Laughing Matters” (2004). Daisy Deadpetals started her career when she was 6 years old performing as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper to the neighborhood kids. You can now catch her headlining the insanely popular “Life’s A Drag” every Sunday at Voodoo Lounge in Fort Lauderdale. The rest of the week she is performing, hosting or DJ at the hottest clubs across South Florida. Daisy keeps the audience guessing whether she is performing in Drag or doing stand-up, you will never know what she cooks up next. There will be an after party at New Moon in Wilton Manors where all attendees will enjoy a free drink with their ticket stub and get to mix and mingle with Suzanne. Ms. Grossman was recognized by the organization for her tireless efforts in promoting Greater Fort Lauderdale as a gay friendly destination. Grossman has also played a key role in creating Greater Fort Lauderdale's new brand image - the image of a sophisticated, cosmopolitan vacation destination offering world-class cultural events, year-round recreation, fine dining, and first-rate entertainment. “We have been very fortunate to work with the Rainbow Alliance as we recognize the significance and economic value of the GLBT market,” commented Grossman in her address to the group during the meeting. With its newly appointed Board of Directors, the Rainbow Alliance will carry on its work toward becoming a leader in the hospitality and lodging industry and continue to work closely with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.  Over $450,000 has been earmarked in the upcoming year’s CVB budget to promote Greater Fort Lauderdale as the premier gay destination in the United States.

Another source of funding comes from Visit Florida, the official tourism marketing corporation for the state of Florida. Nicki E. Grossman was recently named its Chairperson for 2007-2008 and confirmed that $175,000 has been allocated toward promoting Florida to gay and lesbian visitors. Visit Florida markets and facilitates travel to and within Florida for the benefit of its residents, economy and travel and tourism industry. Roger Handevidt, Chairman of the Rainbow Alliance, is grateful for the partnership that the Rainbow Alliance enjoys with the county’s top tourism promotion organizations. “Our vision for the future would not be possible without the support of the GFLCVB and Visit Florida,” Handevidt stated. Mark's List Florida Gay Lesbian Nightclubs Hotels Dining Retail 10 Years of Instinct

Lights! Candles! Birthday cake! Instinct magazine is happy—and so proud—to celebrate 10 years of publishing with its 4th annual Leading Men issue. November’s Instinct honors 25 outstanding men within the gay community, including best-selling author Armistead Maupin, funny man Alec Mapa, Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman, and NBA hoopster and dream date, John Amaechi, who tells the magazine why it’s so important to stand up and stand strong for GLBT causes. “I think sometimes people look at the problems around us, and they’re so daunting you don’t even know where to start. I had that very same feeling. But the fact is—partly it’s my flaw of being a bit arrogant—I just wanted to jump in there and change it anyway.” Instinct also looks back at the last decade with a five-page pictorial of all its covers from 1997 to now. You’ll see 10 years of handsome gay men and many a milestone: Instinct was the first gay publication to feature Amazing Race winner Reichen Leimkuhl on its cover; America’s Next Top Model stars Jay Manuel and Tyra Banks also graced the front of the mag during the show’s first season, and Project Runway’s Tim Gunn landed the cover of 2006’s Leading Men issue. Other exclusive celebrity cover stories over the years have included J.P. Calderon from Survivor and The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, Ross “The Intern” Mathews from The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, as well as pop music divas Beyoncé and Gwen Stefani. Additionally, on the eve of World AIDS Day, the November issue highlights legendary singer Annie Lennox who shares her thoughts on why using her music to bring global awareness to HIV/AIDS is so important: “When [Nelson] Mandela personally described it [the worldwide HIV/AIDS pandemic] as a ‘genocide’—with the accrued death rate amounting to more than the numbers of both World Wars put together—I was profoundly affected. It was then that I decided to really get on board and do whatever I could to help bring attention to this completely unacceptable situation.” To celebrate its 10th anniversary and their November issue’s amazing heroes, Instinct is throwing two gala parties. Festivities are scheduled in New York and Los Angeles. Both parties will be attended by Instinct Leading Men, Hollywood celebrities, VIPs…and, of course, a birthday cake!
