The Miami Gay & Lesbian
Film Festival
presents “Short
Bus” |
|
The Miami Gay &
Lesbian Film Festival presents “Short
Bus” on October 19th
@ 7:30pm
at the Sunrise Gateway Cinema at 1820 E. Sunrise Blvd at US1 North and NE
18th Avenue. Over a period of two years, John Cameron Mitchell, the
creator, director and star of the stage musical and film Hedwig and the Angry
Inch, worked extensively with his actors to develop the script and characters
for his second feature Shortbus, an amazingly playful, pansexual study of modern
relationships set in Manhattan between the terrorist attacks of September
11th and the power outages of summer 2003. From the brilliantly realized opening
shots of an animated New York the audience is set up for a thought provoking
treat. James (Paul Dawson), a former hustler, and his hunky beau Jamie (PJ
De Boy) are a gay couple dealing with the monotony of monogamy. Sofia (Sook-Yin
Lee), a couple's counselor, has some pillow secrets of her own that she's
unable to share with her husband Rob. Severin (Lindsay Beamish) a jaded
dominatrix who never leaves home without her Polaroid and sex toys, is unable to
commit to a relationship. Their lives intersect at Shortbus 'a salon for the
challenged and gifted', a safe bohemian haven where like-minded souls can find
salvation, where sexual fantasies and explorations are permissible, which is
presided over by the divine Mistress Justin Bond (a.k.a. Kiki from Kiki and
Herb). Unveiled at
Cannes
to a standing ovation, and received with much acclaim at the recent Toronto
International Film Festival, Shortbus doesn't shy away from visually showing
us sex, real sex, whether it be gay, straight or lesbian couplings, and
threesomes. While acknowledging that Shortbus's version of "The Star Spangled
Banner" will never be broadcast live from the "Super Bowl", it is
patently clear that Cameron Mitchell is a maverick auteur and this is probably
one of the best independent movies you are going to see all year.
Tickets are
$12 for non-members, $9
for MGLFF members and $5 MGLFF Student Members and can be purchased at 407
Lincoln Road #147 Miami Beach or by calling 305-531-2117 or by visiting their

Stonewall Library Events |
|
* Stonewall Book Discussion Group takes on "Running with
Scissors" on Thursday, October 12, @
7.30PM. The
Stonewall Library and Archives will hold the second in its new monthly series of
book discussions with Freelance author and book critic Jesse Monteagudo
who will moderate a discussion of "Running with Scissors," Augusten
Burroughs's best-selling memoir now a major motion picture.
* Out Boys Movie Night, on Friday, October 13, @
7.00 PM
Suggested Donation $2. FAQS from Everett Lewis (Luster, Natural History
of Parking Lots) is a drama celebrating queer activism in the 21st century,
where intolerance still prevails and prejudice can be found everywhere. Destiny
(Allan Louis), a vigilante drag queen takes in India (Joe Lia), a
homeless teenage runaway, after saving him from a queer bashing. Together with
her other rainbow child, a boyish lesbian named Lester (Minera Vier), the
three live together in an unconventional but fully functioning queer family.
Will India find true love or forever be a cute one night stand? Will Lester find
a girlfriend and shave her legs and will Destiny find herself a man? Anything
can happen and in FAQS everything does happen in a very short space of time, as
our queer musketeers free themselves from the homophobic bonds of an oppressive
society. Discussion Following if Time Permits.
* In Association with BlackOut Fest Friday, October 20, @ 7PM at the
Library Suggested Donation $5 Discussion Following if Time Permits. The
Aggressives; They don't aspire to be men, and they can't be called drag
kings, though they do participate in NYC's predominantly African-American
lesbian drag balls. The fascinating documentary reveals the lives of a varied
group of aggressive women. Homeboy Marquis fosters a masculine image by
strapping her chest until suddenly forced to be a woman after enlisting in the
Army. Passing as a femme boy, Tiffany does not identify as a lesbian because she
only dates transgender men. Raw and uninhibited ex-con Octavia goes from drug
dealer to construction worker Androgynous Kisha balances her aggressive life
with a career as a fashion model. The Aggressives is an insightful look at a
little explored subculture.
* The Stonewall Library and Archives will honor gay rights pioneer,
Dr. Frank Kameny at their annual Stonewall Heritage Gala, on
November 18. One of the most important characters in the history of gay
liberation, Dr. Kameny was selected as this year’s recipient of the Stonewall
Heritage Award, given annually to an individual who has contributed
significantly to national GLBT Culture. Dismissed from his Federal job in 1961
for being gay, Kameny fought the case all the way to the US Supreme Court,
setting the stage for the ongoing effort to secure job protections. That same
year he founded the Mattachine Society of Washington with Jack Nichols,
one of the first homophile organizations in the country. In 1965, Kameny led the
first picket in front of the Pentagon and White House, protesting
the Federal Government’s and the army’s treatment of homosexuals. Kameny was
also instrumental in the American Psychological Association’s decision to remove
homosexuality from their list of mental disorders in 1973. His most enduring
legacy also sums up his career; in 1968 Kameny coined the phrase “Gay is Good”
which became the mantra of gay rights in the ‘70’s. Kameny will be presented
with the award at the Stonewall Heritage Gala on
November 18, 2006 at
7PM at
the Fort Lauderdale Beach Community Center, 3351 NE 33rd Ave, at Oakland Blvd
and A1A. The fundraising event includes the Award Presentation, buffet and open
bar, and features a silent and live auction. The
Gala is Stonewall Library and Archives largest fundraiser of the year, and is
sponsored this year by Gibraltar Bank, Dakota Catering and Tropics
Restaurant, The Melting Pot, and Java Boys. Last year’s event sold out and
is expected to again this year. Tickets are $100 and may be reserved by calling
Stonewall Library and Archives at (954) 763-8565.
The Stonewall Library is located at the Gay and Lesbian Community
Center of South Florida,
1717 North Andrews Avenue,
in Fort Lauderdale. For more information phone the Stonewall Library at (954)
