Online Short Story
and Novel Writing Workshop for Lesbian and Gay Writers
|
|
 |
|
The Next
Generation,
a project of Lavender Writes, the
Broward
County Cultural Division, the Broward County North Regional Library and Border
Books & Music,
presents an ongoing free workshop for gay and lesbian adults who want to learn
how to write fiction or improve their knowledge and writing skills. The course
will meet online, with free computers available at the Broward County Libraries
for people who do not have access to computers at home. Students will learn
about the elements of fiction, write short stories or novel chapters and
critique drafts of work for other students, which will provide feedback for
students while helping them learn to evaluate and improve their own fiction.
This is an interactive class. Students will post drafts of their work and
participate in discussions of fiction wiring and problems and questions as they
arise. The course is organized as a Yahoo Group and meets weekly. Assignments
and discussions are due once a week, but students can participate at a time and
date that is convenient for them. The class is ongoing during the year.
Students can participate for the entire year or for a shorter time. Students
will also have opportunities to read their work at Open Mic readings during the
year. The course is open to new and established writers. A working knowledge of
Microsoft Word and the Internet are required. Attendance is limited to keep
class size small. Students will be accepted on a first-come basis. Additional
students will be accepted during the year as space become available.
Pre-registration required at
LWrites@mindspring.com. This course is part of The
Next Generation, a year-long series of free fiction writing
workshops and public readings for gay and lesbian writers. This program is a
collaborative project of Lavender Writes, the Broward County Libraries Division,
Borders Books and Music and author Karen Dale Wolman. Funding for this
program is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County
Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
Non-gay writers and readers are also welcome to participate. Lavender Writes,
Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, provides service and support to
lesbian and gay writers by sponsoring writing workshops, developing public
forums for writers to present their work and offering assistance with
publication.

PALS Project Launches New Program for HIV+
Men |
 |
|
Living with HIV/AIDS can
prove quite stressful. That’s why the Gay and
Lesbian
Community Center’s PALS Project has launched CHOICES, a new, five-session small-group program
to help participants reduce stress by building coping skills. The first local
example of the nationally respected Healthy Relationships curriculum,
this free program focuses on equipping HIV-positive men with life skills
including problem solving, decision making and
negotiating choices. Interactive, educational and fun, each two-hour CHOICES
session will
provide
group members a time and space to share common experiences and learn new skills
from one another. The PALS Project will offer CHOICES (Choosing
Healthy Options & Improving Communication EffectivenesS)
groups both in English and Spanish. The first group
will begin to meet September 7. The PALS staff currently is facilitating
intake interviews for participants. In a supportive small-group environment,
participants will apply different life skills to building healthy, safer
relationships with family, friends and sex partners. “We don’t tell people
that they have to disclose,” states Kristofer Fegenbush of the PALS
Project. “That’s not our purpose. Instead, we focus on developing
decision-making and problem-solving skills. We provide a safe atmosphere for
guys to discuss honestly how they can make more informed decisions about sexual
behaviors and disclosure. There’s great power in sharing common experiences. By
empowering and equipping participants, we can help stop the spread of HIV.” Sessions
involve both the practice of coping skills and motivational feedback from peers
and trained facilitators. Each meeting will involve fun, interactive
role-playing in a positive, engaging and creative setting. “During each
session we’ll view several short clips from popular movies,” explained
Magno Morales, who recently joined the PALS team. “These modern movie
clips serve as a launching pad for role-play and small group discussions. We’ll
relate the clips to times when disclosure or safer sex decisions could be made.
That way, the guys can think about, discuss and act out how they might do things
differently than the movie characters.” The PALS Project’s commitment
to providing Spanish-speaking groups reflects the GLCC’s dedication to help
better serve the Hispanic community. If you or someone you know may be
interested in joining one of these groups, please contact the PALS Project today
at (954) 463-9011 or
PALS@glccsf.org. Talk with a facilitator about how the program might benefit
you. The PALS Project provides HIV+ men with real social support, accurate HIV
information and practical, effective strategies and tools to lead safer, richer
lives. Through creative efforts, the Project aims to
decrease the number of new HIV infections in the community. The PALS
Project provides a safe, non-judgmental environment for men to look at their own
behavior and to make wise choices that benefit their health and the health of
others. The PALS Project is funded by The Florida Department of Health,
Bureau of HIV/AIDS and is sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center
of South Florida. |

Congregation Etz Chaim’s High
Holy Days Food Drive |
|
The Board of
Directors of Congregation Etz Chaim has announced plans for the Synagogue's
Annual
Food Drive to benefit the Poverello Food Center. The Congregation
organizes the
Food Drive each
year as part of its observance of the Jewish High Holy Days. The
Poverello
Food Center, located on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, serves the Nutritional
Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS. Those who would like to contribute to the
Food Drive should bring non-perishable foods to CEC’s Kol Nidre or Yom Kippur
Services, which are being held at the
Religious
Science
Center,
1550 NE 26th Street in Wilton Manors, on Sunday, October 1, at
8:00 p.m. or Monday, October 2, at
10:00 a.m.
This Annual Food Drive is coordinated by the Synagogue’s Tzedakah and Tikkun
Olam Committee, which in Hebrew mean Charity and Repairing the World. Lyn
Saberg, Chairperson of the Committee, is hoping that this year’s collection
will exceed 200 bags of non-perishable food: “This year we will celebrate
our thirty-third historic year as a spiritual home for GLBT Jews in
South Florida.
With the guidance of Rabbi Harold F. Caminker, our Spiritual Leader, we look
forward to a promising new era of growth and development, and we are asking the
members of our wonderful Congregation, and the Community to be generous in their
donation of food for this worthy Agency." For additional information about Etz Chaim’s
High Holy Day Services, please contact the Synagogue Office at 954-564-9232. |
