Centaur releases new volume
from New York's Soakin' Wet Party |
The
spectacular
Hudson River
Pier dance Soakin Wet is the creation of event producer Don Turner
and for the past six years has been the highlight of New York City's summer
event schedule, attracting people from fifteen states and four different
countries. Veteran Soakin Wet DJ Rob Harris steps into the spotlight
this year to mix the official CD, produced by
Centaur
for the third consecutive year. As with the first two volumes by DJ David
Knapp, Harris has captured the spirit, energy and vibe of the annual Soakin
Wet party in his new CD, Party Groove: Soakin Wet Volume 3. "Centaur
has brought the Soakin Wet party to a new level," says Don Turner when asked
about the addition of another Soakin Wet CD to the series. "I didn't plan on
Soakin Wet becoming so big, but now we have three CDs supporting the growth of
the party." Voted DC's favorite DJ for three consecutive years, Harris
brings his own style of "Twisted House" to the rich club music scene in the
Nation's capital. Harris combines elements of tribal beats, diva anthems and
classics with a smidge and a nod to disco, a sound that he has made his own with
residencies at DC's hottest clubs including Cobalt and Apex. A former military
boy, Chicago native and close friend of Don Turner, Harris has an unbridled
passion for music that he enjoys sharing with everyone, albeit with family and
friends, or a proverbial journey during a night out at the club. Party
Groove: Soakin Wet Volume 3 boasts several #1 artists, remixes
by dance music’s top producers and a who's-who of summer hits straight from the
dance charts. With half of the songs currently on Billboard's Hot Dance Club
Play chart, Harris has loaded up the mix with top 10 favorites including DJ
Mike Cruz presenting Joi Cardwell and Georgie Porgie with "It's
Over" and L.E.X.'s latest single, "Let Me Hear The Music,"
which features Niki Haris. Zhana Saunders, Ashlee and Suzanne
Shaw all provide vocals for new tracks that Harris includes, and his choice
of instrumentals with "Dance 2 Disco," "I Like It" and "Remember
the Past," make for smooth transitions throughout. Rachel Panay, a DC
native, also makes an appearance with her new single "The Real Thing."
Party Groove: Soakin Wet Volume 3 will be available in stores nationwide on
August 29, including Virgin, Tower Records and online at
www.centaurmusic.com, where visitors can listen to samples of every track on
the album. Partial proceeds of Soakin
Wet 6 will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS |

21st Annual
Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival |
|
 |
|
The Fort
Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) is revving up for their 21st Annual
event scheduled for October 20 –
November 12, 2006.
FLIFF announced that they will open the fest Friday, October 20, 7:30pm at
Parker Playhouse with the Florida Premiere of Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver
followed by a Fiesta. President and CEO of FLIFF, Gregory von Hausch,
commented, “We selected
Volver
because Pedro Almodóvar is universal. His films are enjoyed no matter what
language you may speak. In
South Florida’s culturally diverse community,
Volver,
will speak to everyone. We also wanted our opening night film to be lighter in
tone. I think, in today’s world, we all need an escape. It doesn't hurt that
this film is being toasted as Almodóvar’s best yet - and that says it all.”
Volver, which walked away with Best Actress Awards for all five leading ladies
and Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival, stars
Pénelope Cruz,
Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo. The film was
written and directed by Almodóvar. Volver is a meeting of “Mildred Pierce” and
“Arsenic and Old Lace”, combined with the surrealistic naturalism of his fourth
film, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto! (What have I done to Deserve This?),
that is, Madrid and its lively working-class neighborhoods, where the
immigrants from the various Spanish provinces share dreams, lives and fortune
with a multitude of ethnic groups and other races. At the heart of this social
framework, three generations of women survive wind, fire and even death, thanks
to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality.

The
Industrial World of Artist Robert Perry |
|
We live in an
industrial world and in this world often things are discarded for something new
and improved. This is where artist Robert Perry comes in. As a lighting
sculpture, Perry utilizes primarily aluminum, stainless steel, recycled
materials, found objects and industrial scrap metal in his lighting structures.
Whether it be an old aluminum fan blade, a set of kitchen utensils or perhaps a
piece of an automobile, Perry will find a way to light it up and make it come to
life. By combining the natural qualities of light and shadow with the strength
and hardness of raw metals, unique sculptures are formed. Considered by many to
be an Artisan of Light, designer Robert Perry has spent years earning his living
as an award winning theatrical lighting designer. Robert incorporated the skills
that he learned in the theatrical world to create unique handcrafted lighting
sculptures and fixtures by combining the creativity of sculptures and the
beautiful effects of light and shadow. His designs not only convey a sense of
rawness and strength, but also passion, honesty and humor.
Art
Expressions Gallery (1212 NE 4th Ave
Fort Lauderdale) proudly invites you to join them on Saturday, September 9th
to meet Robert Perry as he presents his work. A wine and cheese reception will
be held that evening from 7:00 P.M. to
9:00 P.M. Admission is free. The exhibit will run
through September 29 and the Gallery Hours are: Mon. - Sat. 11:00 am - 7:00 pm.
Admission is free. For more info call 954-527-7700. |

9/11 Fifth Anniversary Tribute |
|
The
Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) will pay tribute to the 5th
Anniversary of 9/11 and to those who lost their lives on the day that shook
the world. The tribute will take place at Cinema Paradiso on September
11 beginning at
6:30pm with a color guard presentation by local firefighters, and
an opening meditation by Rick Hunter, lead pastor at the
City
Church. FLIFF will present a special screening of THE GUYS,
starring Academy Award™ nominee Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Ghostbusters,
Working Girl) and Tony and Emmy Award-winner Anthony LaPaglia (star
of the hit CBS drama Without A Trace). An adaptation from the stage
play by Anne Nelson, THE GUYS is a powerfully moving and
unexpectedly humorous film about a
New York City
journalist (Weaver) who is called upon to help a fire captain (LaPaglia) write a
series of eulogies for the men he lost at the World Trade Center. As the
fireman begins to open up and work through his grief, the two form an unexpected
bond and we rediscover the quiet heroism that informs all of our daily lives.
Following the
film, there will be an open discussion regarding how different aspects of our
lives have changed since 9/11. This broad panel discussion will include: Fort
Lauderdale City Manager George Grestas who was in New York at the time
the airplanes hit the Twin Towers,
Dr. Larry
Thompson
of First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale, and Tommy Melanges, a
Junior at St. Thomas Acquinas High School in Broward County who was 11
years old at the time of 9/11/2001, plus representatives of the Broward County
Schools and the Muslim Community.
Hal Axler, Director of Operations, for Fort Lauderdale
International Film Festival and Cinema Paradiso, who spearheaded the event,
commented, 9/11 changed our world and our lives forever. We felt it was
extremely important to offer the community a way to honor the 5th
Anniversary of the event that took so many lives and devastated not only the
great city of New York, but left its mark on the world. We hope it will be an
evening of
history,
healing, and hope.
After
the panel discussion, a complimentary sneak preview of the documentary "The
Saint of 9/11" will be presented. The film, which celebrates the life of
FDNY Chaplain, Father Mychal Judge, a proud homosexual, who lost
his life at the
World
Trade Center, will be featured at the 21st Annual Fort Lauderdale International
Film Festival. In a special presentation during the next city commission
meeting, The Honorable Jim Naugle, Mayor of Fort Lauderdale will issue a
proclamation naming this day Cinema Paradiso 9/11 Commemoration Day.
TICKETS are $10 General Admission, $ 8 Students and Seniors, $5.00 FLIFF members
Proceeds from the event will benefit Broward Firefighters.

10th
Annual Miami Recognition Dinner |
 |
 |
 |
| Bob
Cole |
Julian Bond |
The
Weekly News |
|
|
The
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
will honor Julian Bond, Robert (Bob) Cole and The Weekly News
(TWN) at its 10th Annual
Miami
Recognition Dinner
on Saturday, November 4, at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.
Presented by Merrill Lynch, the event recognizes the recipients for their
outstanding contributions to the social, cultural, political and
humanitarian needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
community. Launched in 1997, the Recognition Dinner quickly cemented its place
as the premier event for uniting and honoring individuals and organizations for
their achievements and efforts in fostering equal rights for the LGBT community.
Two-thirds of the net proceeds from the event will be distributed to Miami-Dade
LGBT organizations through the Dade Community Foundation. This year’s honorees:
2006 National Leadership Award: Julian Bond is national chairman
of the NAACP, a longtime civil rights activist and one of the founders of
the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960. In 1994, he became
one of the few African-American leaders to publicly pledge support for equality
in marriage rights for same-sex couples, calling it a civil rights issue. In
February 2004, when President Bush threw his support behind the Federal Marriage
Amendment, Bond declared that opposition to same-sex marriage “is couched in
much of the same language as opposition to interracial marriage once was: ‘This
will destroy the moral fiber of the country, and it will undermine existing,
established institutions and organizations.’ […] It was bogus then, and it's
bogus now.”
2006 Humanitarian Award: Bob Cole has long been a dedicated, unsung hero
for the South Florida LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities. A travel agent for 28
years, Cole is a tireless volunteer and generous donor, supporting many
organizations and causes, including Say No to Discrimination, Project YES,
Health Crisis Network, the Miami Performing Arts Center, the Gay & Lesbian Film
Festival and Ballet Gamonet/Maximum Dance. An early pioneer in the
South Florida fight for equality, Cole was president of Network, the precursor
to the Miami Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and served on the boards of
the Dade Human Rights Foundation and SAVE Dade.
2006 Community Service Award: TWN began publishing in 1977 as a
vehicle for uniting the community in the wake of the campaign to repeal
Miami-Dade’s new gay rights ordinance. It served as the sole source of pro-gay
rights information for the LGBT community, countering attack ads and editorials
fueled by Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign. In 1988, the U.S. Library
of Congress recognized TWN and several other gay newspapers across the
country by archiving back issues. Under the leadership of publisher Bill
Watson, what had begun as a mimeographed newsletter with few volunteers and
little backing evolved into a respected source of news. TWN left a
29-year legacy when it ceased publication in early 2006.
Miami
Recognition Dinner honorees over the past decade have included such national and
international leaders as U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, U.S. Rep.
Richard Gephardt, Spain President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Cristina
Saralegui, playwright Terrence McNally and actor Sir Ian McKellen.
Previous local luminaries include Alicia Apfel, Marleine Bastien, Billy Bean,
Edda Cimino, Dennis Edwards, Liebe Gadinsky, John Graves, Neisen Kasdin, Richard
C. Milstein, Jorge Mursuli, Damian Pardo, Robert Rosenberg, Lee Schrager, Marc
Steinberg, David Treece, Rosemary Wilder and Elkin Zapata. Last
year’s event took place just 12 days after Hurricane Wilma devastated South
Florida, yet more than 700 people, many of them still without electricity in
their homes, assembled at the Loews for a truly magical evening.
The Task
Force is extremely proud to welcome Merrill Lynch as Presenting Sponsor, leading
the way for others to enjoy the extensive exposure and visibility afforded to
sponsors of the event. In addition to Merrill Lynch, sponsors to date include
Williamson Cadillac-Hummer, Stephen Herbits, James G. Pepper, Andrew Tobias &
Charles Nolan, Akerman Senterfitt, Samuel S. Blum & Milenko Samardzich and James
Garbus & Jim Vinett.
The
evening features a pre-dinner cocktail reception and silent auction, with
entertainment and dancing to follow the program. Tickets are available for a
donation of $175 through Aug. 31 and $190 thereafter. VIP tickets are $300. As
the Task Force is a 501(c3) nonprofit organization, donations are tax deductible
as permissible under the law.
The 10th
Annual Miami Recognition Dinner will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
The Loews Miami Beach Hotel is located at 1601 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.
Tickets and further information are available online at
www.theTaskForce.org/miami. For information on sponsorship or to purchase
tickets, call 305.571.1924. |
