Last Week Wrapped Up |
|
Last
Thursday, July 20, I went to Bills
Filing Station for their Thursday
Karaoke hosted by Rickie and Andrew
(what a cute couple!!!!). You can also catch
Andy at Laughing Matterz.
I then headed over to Elements for
their big double celebration (a roast) of
Toni Barone’s birthday and Pooch’s 30th
year anniversary of
bartending
in Fort Lauderdale. The roast was hosted by
Russ (of Ramrod) and seen there was
Chris (Jackhammer/Steel), Pompano
Bill, JW (Bushes), Miss Kitty, Diva,
Fabricio, Craig, Guido (Rimmer,
Hotspots), Howard Marr (Fabscout
Entertainment), Jim Albright
(Hotspots), Timmy Barton (Georgie’s
Alibi), Misty Eyes, the entire staff
of Marks List, and many more. It was
a fun night making fun of Toni and Pooch and
laughing with lots of old friends. If you
missed it there is always next year!!!

Congratulation goes out to LOGO TV
who celebrated their one year of being on
the air this past weekend. I for one am very
happy to have a channel dedicated to the Gay
and Lesbian lifestyle!!! |

MGLFF’s August Monthly Screening |
For
MGLFF’s August Monthly Screening, they are proud to present a sneak preview of
one of the most eagerly awaited independent films of the year in the Miami
community, co-directors Wash Westmoreland & Richard Glatzer’s Quinceañera
on Thursday August 17th at Regal
Cinemas
South Beach at 7:30pm. Quinceañera
is a milagro – a miraculous
exploration of racial, class and sexual tensions colliding in a working class
Latino neighborhood undergoing a rapid gentrification. Fourteen-year-old
Magdalena (Emily Roos) is like any Latina her age – she’s obsessed with her
upcoming quinceañera, the elaborate 2,500-year-old ritual still revered in
Latino culture as the transitional moment when a young girl becomes a woman.
Yet just at the
moment
Magdalena should be happiest, an unexpected turn of events estranges from her
parents and she must go to live with her gentle, great-uncle Tomas (Chalo
Gonzalez) and cousin Carlos (Jesse Garcia), a tough and handsome cholo
kicked out of his own house for being gay.
The small
cottage in which Tomas hosts Magdalena and Carlos,
meanwhile,
is owned by an affluent white late 30something gay male couple, who take more
than just a neighborly interest in the fiery, street-smart but naive young
Carlos. The consequences go far beyond what Carlos, Tomas or
Magdalena could ever imagine… Winner of BOTH the
Grand Jury
Prize
AND the
Audience
Favorite Award
in
the Dramatic Competition
at the 2006
Sundance
Film Festival,
Quinceañera
celebrates the power of family – chosen family. Earlier this year, in
our 2006 Festival, MGLFF held a panel discussion which posed the question, “After
the popular success of
Brokeback Mountain,
what’s next?”
The answer in their hearts, at least for the moment, is
Quinceañera.
Directors Wash
Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer previously co-directed the film
The Fluffer
in 2001, and Glatzer previously wrote & directed the film
Grief
with Craig Chester.
Westmoreland’s most recent directorial credit was the documentary
Gay Republicans
which
screened at MGLFF 2005. Primarily in English, with some Spanish (translated by
English subtitles).
South Beach's host with the most, Edison Farrow, will
host an after-party at the Buck15
Lounge, located above Miss Yip Restaurant. MGLFF patrons will
receive a free shot of Tequila OR a ½ price drink. |

Pride of
Greater Fort Lauderdale |
|
The Board
of Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale, the producers of the annual
Stonewall Street Festival & Parade, will be holding a new member recruitment
gathering on Thursday August 10, at 7pm
in the Manchester Lounge at Georgie’s Alibi. There are currently
3 open voting positions on the board and numerous committee chairmanships that
need to be filled. The 2006 Festival was their biggest and most successful
event to date, but to continue to grow, the board needs to expand and hopefully
further diversify its membership. Specifically, the board hopes some of the
women of our community will show interest in joining as there are currently no
women on the board of the organization. If you have interest in becoming a
member of PGFTL, please join them on August 10th at the Alibi or send
an email to
info@stonewallstreetfestival.com
prior to August 10th. |
