Naugle Protest |
 |
|
Not since the 1970s has
South Florida
seen a rally of Tuesday’s magnitude in protest to a politician’s comments
disparaging the LGBT community. The crowd began assembling at about 3:30 outside
of Fort Lauderdale's City Hall and grew larger and larger as people stopped by
on their way home form work. Several leaders of national rights organizations
spoke, including Matt Foreman, Executive
Director of the National Gay & Lesbian
Task Force, Nadine Smith Executive Director of Equality
Florida, Howard
Simon
Executive Director of the ACLU, Andrew
L. Rosenkranz, Florida Regional Director from the
Anti-Defamation League and
Stephan Lampasso representative
of Human Rights Campaign.
Local dignitaries included numerous civic leaders as well as city and county
commissioners who all called for the censure of Mayor Naugle.
The crowd was shocked to hear that the mayor continued making
derogatory statements to the media earlier in the day. According to National Gay
and Lesbian Task Force's Matt Foreman “Mayor
Jim Naugle issued a public apology on the steps of City Hall
Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't the apology the gay community was looking for.
Naugle apologized for underestimating the problem of men having sex with each
other in public restrooms, and urged people to call police to complain when they
come upon it. He also said
Broward County
leads the nation in the incidence of new AIDS cases involving men having sex
with men, and questioned whether the county tourism office should be welcoming
them here.”
It's time to end the mayor’s senseless comments. We encourage you
to visit
http://flushnaugle.com and Mark's List to stay informed as this important
story continues to develop.

Revisit Broadway with
Christopher and Friends |
|
Do your favorite entertainment-related memories
focus on Broadway? Would you like to relive some of the most enthralling
musical moments you’ve witnessed on stage? You’ll have that opportunity
Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, at
Fort Lauderdale’s
First Congregational Church, when Christopher and Friends present
Broadway Revisited. The production—a two-act revue of show stoppers
from such works as Rent, Show Boat, Miss Saigon,
Chicago, and Phantom of the Opera—is a labor of love produced and
directed by Christopher Lepard. “I wrote the show after a year of
hard struggle, a battle with leukemia, and the loss of someone I had loved for
years,” he said. “During that incredibly difficult period, the friends I
got to know through my association with
South Florida
Lambda Chorale gave me the strength I needed to persevere. This show pays
homage not only to Broadway but also to my wonderful family of Lambda friends,
and for that reason, I am producing it partly as a fundraiser for the chorale." Many of the performers in Broadway Revisited are
also members of Lambda. Performances begin at
8 p.m.,
August 10-11, at the First Congregational Church, 2501 NE 30 Street, Fort
Lauderdale. To reserve tickets ($20), call

2 Events at Cinema
Paradiso |
|
Few opera stars
have ever captured the imagination of the American public as Beverly Sills.
Her glorious singing, compelling dramatic sense, and sparkling personality
contributed to the unprecedented growth of American Opera. It seems ironic that
Sills, an Opera star whose breathing techniques are essential to her art, passed
away July 2, 2007 from inoperable lung cancer. In honor of this
world-renowned icon and to help generate greater awareness in preventing lung
disease, the Florida Grand Opera (FGO), Fort Lauderdale International
Film Festival (FLIFF), WPBT Channel 2, and the American Lung
Association of Florida will present a special tribute to celebrate the life
and career of Beverly Sills. The event takes place at Cinema Paradiso,
Tuesday, August 7 beginning with a fully catered reception at
6:00pm. At
7:00pm, Justin Moss, Managing Director for Marketing &
Communication for Florida Grand Opera, will discuss Sills' remarkable career in
a program illustrated by a film of Beverly Sills performing her most famous
roles on the opera stage. The American Lung Association will provide pamphlets
about Lung Health including such issues as Asthma, Lung Cancer, COPD and
information about how to get involved with the American Lung Association.
Breathe Easy Bracelets, and Asthma Walk Teddy Bears will be available for
purchase and will benefit The American Lung Association. Tickets: $18
general admission/ $15 FLIFF, FGO and WPBT members. For more information
call 954-525-FILM
or

Do you like
movies? ... Hob knobbing with filmmakers and stars? ...Making new friends with
similar interests? The 22nd Annual
Fort Lauderdale
International Film Festival (FLIFF) is just around the corner. FLIFF's Annual
volunteer meeting and film will be August 27 at Cinema Paradiso.
Meeting begins at
6:00pm followed
by the film, Hollywood Dreams,
at 8:30pm. Volunteers will be needed between August through November
pending their job interest and availability. Hours are flexible, they can work
days or evenings and there are a variety of responsibilities including office
help, theatre help, deliveries, mailings, data entry, marketing and
even language translators. No matter the area in which a volunteer donates
their time, they are invaluable to the success of FLIFF.
Hollywood Dreams follows a
young woman, with a life-long dream of achieving fame and stardom, from a small
town in
Iowa to Los Angeles. After a series of difficult and sometimes comic
struggles she literally bumps into a self-styled "major producer / manager" who,
together with his personal and professional partner, takes her under his wing.
As her fate seems to have suddenly changed and her goal appears finally within
reach, her romantic involvement with an exciting, complex up-and-coming young
actor challenges her ideas of success, fame and love. Written and Directed by
Henry Jaglom, the Hollywood Dreams
stars Justin Kirk (Puccini for
Beginners), new comer Tanna Frederick, Karen Black and Melissa
Leo. Tickets: The film is free for FLIFF volunteers; $8 general
admission, $5 FLIFF members.
Location:
Cinema Paradiso
503 SE 6th
Street, Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown
Fort Lauderdale
on the South side of the
New River, one block east of the Broward County
Courthouse. Cinema Paradiso offers a full beer and wine menu, concessions, the
most comfortable and plush stadium seating in

an outside gathering area, the Paradiso Patio. Operated by Fort Lauderdale
International Film Festival, Cinema Paradiso is South Florida's most unique
year-round, art house movie theater presenting independent films and events.

free at street meters after 6pm nightly and all day on Sundays. You can also

One-One-One: Imagine Miami Reborn |
On
July 28, Camposition, Artistic Director Octavio Campos,
and Ralph de la Portilla host One-One-One: Imagine Miami Reborn, a
raucously irreverent and uninhibited, birthday homage to the city of Miami, a
city that has tormented and tantalized artists for over a century. The
celebration is being sponsored by Tobacco Road & Tinta y Café including
performances, visual art, and installations that re-imagine the history of the
metropolis on the occasion of its 111th birthday. A cutting-edge Who’s Who of
Miami’s foremost artists will take part. Participants include Xavier Cortada,
Jesse Jackson, Circ X, Pedro Portal, Natasha Tsakos, La Fortuna, Diana Lozano,
The Jacuzzi Boys, Tortas y Tacones, NF Romero, Eva Ruiz,
Jack Pakonis, Jennifer
Smith-DeCastroverde, DJ Safe Stadick, Claudio Marcotulli, Octavio Campos
(with his dance theater company Camposition) as well as many others! The event
will take place The Jose Marti Building, 801 SW 3rd Avenue, home of 801
Projects. This party is a benefit for Camposition’s 2007-2008 season. The
festivities commence at 9:00 pm and the cover charge is $10. A $50 VIP pass
includes unlimited food and drink and membership in Camposition. On July 28,
1896, the City of Miami was incorporated on a site almost exactly 1,111 yards
from the site of the festivities. On that day, 344 residents voted to
incorporate (largely as a measure to help abolish public nudity and excrement in
the streets). As part of the One-One-One celebration, 344 select Miamians will
be asked to re-enact that vote—at the exact hour (shortly after 10:00pm) of the
original vote 111 years earlier. This “re-incorporation vote” will affirm faith
in the Miami vision for another year…until the One-One-Two celebration and every
year thereafter in perpetuity. The host and creator of One-One-One is native
Miamian Ralph de la Portilla, best known as co-creator of Fuacata! in
Little Havana, USA and Camposition Board Member. Camposition Inc. (founded July
2006) is a non-profit multidisciplinary collaborative that pushes the boundary
between contemporary performance and activism. Camposition’s professional and
student artists take creative risks by crafting innovative, artistically
demanding live performances, interactive outreach programs, public health
interventions and professional development trainings through the creation of
socially conscious physical and visual theater to challenge both artists and
audiences with new ways of seeing, representing and responding to contemporary
life. |

"An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" at the Colony
|
|
On Friday
July 27th at 7:30pm and 10pm, and Saturday July 28th at
7:30pm and 10pm, Sandra Bernhard will perform at the historic Colony
Theater on Lincoln Road. A portion of the proceeds from these four
performances will benefit Switchboard of Miami's GLBT Suicide Awareness
Initiative. For 25 years, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and
critics with her knife-edged humor, satire and emotive performances on film,
television and stage. "An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" includes comedy,
commentary and music, and
Bernhard appears with musical director/pianist, Mitch Kaplan and her band.
The SF Weekly praised Bernhard, "One moment, her voice is lulling you
into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back several rows with it."
Bernhard's last show, "Hero Worship," featured a five piece band and
was a post September 11th tribute to Bernhard's commitment to irony - that
it, too, has survived September 11th. The show featured a range of musical
numbers (some original and some covers). It was a fearless attempt to show
that life must continue and the show must go on. Other notable performances
include her participation in the "Stormy Weather Benefit '98," organized by
Don Henley, which also featured Stevie Nicks and Joni
Mitchell, as well as "The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Car | |
