Weekend Wrap-Up |
|
Friday
night Ken & Lloyd, owners of Scandals celebrated a birthday and on
hand were hundreds of friends and supporters to wish them well. The Dean &
Lee country duo led the crowd in song. As you know Scandals has become a
favorite watering hole for
South Florida's
Country Western fans. Drive by any night and you'll see a parking lot filled
with cars that K-Mart could only hope were their shoppers…..LOL….. and happy
birthday to our favorite Cowboys, Ken and Lloyd.
A
tremendous number of South Floridian's decided to check out the first
Fort Lauderdale
Rentboy Pool Party at the Windamar Beach Resort and nobody left
disappointed! The weekend of events included an opening party at Boardwalk,
an after party at Steel and the weekend wrapped up at Voodoo Lounge.
We can't possibly mention all of the Rentboys and Video Stars that attended, but
let’s just say everybody with a ticket got more than they bargained for. The
Pool Party itself was worth the price of a
VIP
pass alone. Marks Lists own Misty Eyez MCd the festivities and DJs
Miik and Lydia Prim spun for the pool party crowd. Check out the
photos of this fabulous weekend in the Mark's List Mad Paparazzi area. |

Seniors
Invited To Step Out And “Name That Tune” At The GLCC |
|
Local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) seniors have
recently formed a group to promote fun and informative activities for the GLBT
senior community, called the “Not-So-Serious-Seniors” and have announced
their first event “Name that Tune” to be held on July 24
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South
Florida (GLCC). The fun-filled event is a spin-off of the popular 1950’s
show ‘Name That Tune’ and will challenge their memories to name the songs of the
40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, and to “Name that Tune”. Fun prizes will be awarded to
the winners. Ken Merrifield, one of the founding members of the group,
who has also served as a volunteer at the GLCC for over two years, shares “Our
objective with ‘Not-So-Serious-Seniors’ is to create activities which are
‘participatory’, and ‘fun’ for seniors to interact actively more so than
passively such as watching a movie or television program together for example”.
“This event”, contributes another founder of the new group, Jan Kronholm
“this is a pilot for our plans to hold a different activity or themed program
at least once a month starting in September at the GLCC. We are encouraging
seniors to join us, to have fun and be a part of the beginning of this
‘Not-So-Serious’ group and to contribute ideas for future events that will be
enjoyable and rewarding”. Marc Hansen, local emcee extraordinaire for
the Gay community, and bingo caller at the GLCC on the 2nd Saturday
of every month, will be the Master of Gay Ceremonies, at ‘Name That Tune’.
Café-style seating, free refreshments, door prizes, floor prizes, and more will
be part of the fun. There is a $5.00 admission charge to attend this event where
a good time and good people are guaranteed not to be disappointed. “We only
ask that people come and join us in being part of a fun-filled event where we
can share memories and play some games with a theme of some of our favorite old
songs” adds Kronholm.
Paul Hyman, Executive Director, GLCC contributed his overwhelming
support for the Not-So-Serious-Seniors “This social and fun group is a
fantastic complement to existing senior targeted programs and organizations that
the GLCC supports, including Primetimers and S.A.G.E.” Prime timers meets
on the first Sunday of each month from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.; S.A.G.E., Seniors Acting
in a Gay Environment, also utilizes the GLCC facility and holds weekly meetings
on each Wednesday and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Merrifield, who also
attends the S.A.G.E. meetings on Wednesday which are for men, and Thursdays for
men and women, is especially excited about starting a “Not-So-Serious-Seniors”
group as it “offers another important social outlet which is an important
addition to his current involvement at the GLCC with S.A.G.E. as well as his
volunteer contributions which he enjoys regularly.” Not-So-Serious-Seniors,
as well as S.A.G.E. are two of over 50 community organizations and groups, which
utilize the GLCC facility as their home. For more information about the ‘Name
That Tune’ event or the ‘Not-So-Serious-Seniors’ group meeting at the GLCC,
please contact Ken Merrifield at

or

The GLCC is a non-profit organization, providing information, education,
advocacy, support, human services, cultural experiences, and social
opportunities to foster personal development and quality of life for the entire
community. For more information about the GLCC, or to learn ways individuals or
businesses can provide support, please contact Robert Boo, Director of

God & Gays Gathering
2007: Unity is Our Identity |
|
“I’d rather she be dead than gay,”
confesses a mother who, unfortunately, got her wish. She lost her daughter to
suicide and talks about it in the heart-wrenching and yet unifying feature
documentary, God and Gays: Bridging the Gap. Filmmakers,
Gathering founders and life partners, Luane Beck and Kim Clark, created
God and Gays: Bridging the Gap to offer an intimate look into the lives
of people raised in Christian homes and who struggle, knowing – or fearing,
their homosexual path. Now, they host the largest, most impressive line-up of
qualified speakers on the country’s most non-discussed topic, can you be
Christian and be gay? With the religious right and mainstream Christianity
teaching emotionally traumatizing ex-gay therapies, celibacy or subtle and
equally as harmful forms of tolerance, it’s the perfect time in history for the
God & Gays Gathering. The God & Gays Gathering features progressive Episcopalian
Bishop John Shelby Spong, previous ghost writer to Jerry Falwell Rev.
Dr. Mel White, evangelical minister’s wife Peggy Campolo and
ex-Exodus group leader Darlene Bogle plus many more together in
Nashville, TN. Considered a central location for people all around the Bible
belt area to attend, Gathering founder Kim Clark hopes, “anyone who is tired
of being asked to vote on marriage equality and hearing only fear as the reason
to keep people divided and are ready to deal with the human side of the debate
around homosexuality and religion in a safe, accepting environment is welcome.
We are ready for the parents and friends of gays, lesbians and transgender
people to come so we can support them as they will and do get flack from society
for not disowning their loved one. We are ready for the gay person with nowhere
to go safely, who has contemplated or attempted suicide to instead invest time
in him or herself, in what they’re going through and how to work with their
faith to be the solution, not the problem. We’re ready for the church leader,
the teacher, the therapist, to give them support in leading their groups to
learning more on what it’s like to be gay and religious. The goal is
empowerment. Get people out of victim status and they become more of who they
are, how God made them.” Clark is best known for her quote, “comfort
zones are slow dream killers” and lives by it on a daily basis, which is
what got her through making God & Gays: Bridging the Gap and creating several
support services like the Gathering. Her partner, Luane Beck, originally made
the film based on Clark’s own personal struggle with being gay and Christian.
Since premiering, they’ve toured the country speaking to large groups, showing
the movie, receiving thousands of emails, letters of support and stories about
changed lives. God and Gays: Bridging the Gap is a rare opportunity to
get questions answered, challenge the myths about gay people, and to put a human
face on a hot political issue. The story is uniquely told by the people who live
the struggle, judgment, fear and ignorance of others every day. “This is
about real human beings, contributors to society, educated, kind, God-loving
people. This is for real and people deserve to see and hear the stories of the
people whose lives they will affect,” says Producer Kim Clark. God and
Gays: Bridging the Gap unifies Christianity and sexual preference in a time
where church denominations are on the verge of dividing, in an era where history
doesn’t repeat itself, but people repeat history. Editors: For an EPK
and free viewing of the movie trailer, go online to http://www.godandgaysthemovie.com.
About Zernus Productions: Writer, Director and Actor Luane Beck
started Zernus Productions to produce her first feature-length narrative drama
Intentions in 2001. Award winning documentary producer Kim Clark joined
in 2003 and together they focus their true-to-life stories with social integrity
and unification in mind, heart and soul. Learn more about the nationally
distributed Intentions at

Historic Televised
Forum On Issues Of Importance To The LGBT Community With The Leading 2008
Democratic Presidential Candidates |
|
Logo, a division of Viacom’s (NYSE:
VIA and VIA.B) MTV
Networks, and the
Human Rights Campaign
Foundation today announced they will co-present an historic televised forum
on issues of importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
community with the leading 2008 Democratic presidential candidates,
including currently confirmed and in
alphabetical order, Hillary
Clinton and Barack Obama. The one-hour event will be held 6 p.m.
EDT Aug. 9 in Los Angeles before a studio
audience and broadcast live, without commercial interruption, exclusively on
Logo’s 24/7 cable television channel as well as through live streaming video at
LOGOonline.com. Logo is the nation’s leading television and broadband channel
for the LGBT audience and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the
educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization. This
event, which marks the first time in history the major presidential candidates
will address a live LGBT television audience, is part of MTV Networks’
award-winning pro-social efforts and dedication to engaging its audiences on the
issues that are most important and relevant to them. The event also continues
the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s efforts to educate and bring awareness to
issues of equality and fairness that continue to affect the lives of LGBT
Americans. The candidates will appear sequentially and engage in conversation
with co-panelists Melissa Etheridge, performer and advocate, and Joe
Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The panelists
plan to cover a range of issues including relationship recognition, marriage
equality, workplace fairness, the military, hate crimes, HIV/AIDS and other
important issues. “In the 2008 presidential election, issues of concern to
the LGBT community have already been at the forefront of the national
conversation,” said Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign
Foundation. “From the repeal of “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” to the recent
signing of a civil unions bill in
New Hampshire, there is no
doubt that voters will demand answers to important questions affecting our
community.” “We're
honored to give the presidential candidates an historic opportunity to share
their views directly with the LGBT audience,” said Brian Graden,
President, Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group, and President, Logo. “This
forum continues MTV Networks’ tradition of engaging vital niche audiences with
voting and the electoral process.” The forum will include significant online
components at LOGOonline.com and HRC.org, including online question submission.
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation and Logo invited the leading Democratic and
Republican candidates to participate in the forum. The LGBT vote is considered a
decisive electoral force and according to exit poll data make up approximately 4
percent of the voting population. Los Angeles was chosen as the site for the
event because of the state’s early primary election, on February 5th, 2008. The
event will take place at Studio City, CA, at HD Vision Studios and this event
represents the first live event airing on Logo. |
