Midland Medical
Incorporated (MMI),
selected by the Wellness Center of South Florida for Low Cost HIV Clinic in
Broward County |
|
Midland
Medical Incorporated
(MMI), a Florida-based, healthcare facilities development and management
company, announced today that it has been selected by the Wellness Center of
South Florida (Wellness Center) to establish, staff, and operate a
diagnostic and medical treatment clinic for persons co-infected by HIV/AIDS in
the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area. The clinic will be located in the Wellness
Center's facility in Broward County, and the new services will be available to
all infected persons at low cost. The Wellness Center is a 501 (c) (3)
nonprofit organization that has provided post diagnosis support activities and
services for infected HIV/AIDS individuals since 1996, according to Heidi
Andrus, the Wellness Center's founder and executive director. Diagnosed as HIV
positive herself in 1986 and later as positive for Hepatitis C (HCV), Andrus
discovered that persons with her condition often 'fell through the cracks' when
it came to learning about treatment options and finding support groups, and
established her group to fill the gap. The Wellness Center was founded initially
to service the growing population of persons co-infected with HIV/HCV, but more
recently shifted its focus to exclusively provide financial assistance to
HIV/AIDS positive individuals with limited incomes. Qualified persons can turn
to the Wellness Center to obtain funds to pay for their medical insurance
premiums, thereby insuring that their healthcare coverage's remain in effect.
In addition, it supports the HIV/AIDS community with outreach counseling and
education services. For information about the Wellness Center and its full range
of offerings, contact Ms. Heidi Andrus, Executive Director, by email at WCSFlink@cs.com
or phone 1-954 568-0152. To contact her by fax, dial 1-954-1364. |

PALS Project welcomes new staff member |
|
The
PALS Project has expanded its services to the community with the addition of new
staff member Magno Morales. Morales most recently worked in HIV testing,
outreach and prevention at Hispanic Unity. The PALS Project, a non-profit
HIV prevention project in Broward County, works with HIV+ gay, bisexual, queer
and questioning men. Located at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of
South Florida, the PALS Project provides HIV+ men with real social support,
accurate HIV information and practical, effective strategies and tools to lead
safer, richer lives. “Magno displays such passion and vision for work with
HIV+ individuals, especially an underserved Hispanic community,” states
Kristofer Fegenbush, Project Manager. “His enthusiasm, experience and
dedication will assist the PALS Project and the GLCC as we improve and enrich
our services.” Morales led HIV prevention support groups in his native
country of Nicaragua and in Costa Rica. He also collaborated with his
brother-in-law, a physician in Nicaragua, to lead prevention meetings on college
campuses. Morales will help the PALS Project launch the first local examples of
the nationally respected Healthy Relationships program. This
five-session small-group program helps participants reduce stress by building
coping skills—including problem solving,
decision making and negotiating choices. In a safe, supportive environment,
participants learn to make informed decisions that will build healthy, safer
relationships with family, friends and sex partners.
The PALS Project will offer groups both in English and
Spanish. These fun, interactive sessions use modern movie clips to launch small
group discussions each week. “I look
forward to years of work with the PALS Project and the GLCC,”
states Morales. “I’m excited by their vision for the future. We share a
common heart for the Latin community.” Through creative efforts, the PALS
Project aims to decrease the number of new HIV infections in the community.
The Project provides a safe, non-judgmental,
supportive environment for men to look at their own behavior and to make wise
choices that benefit their health and the health of others. PALS
receives its funding from the Florida Department of
Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS. |
