Royal
Support for Michael Gongora |
Miami Beach
City Commissioner and Acting vice Mayor Michael Gongora received some
royal support at a recent campaign fundraiser. Her Imperial Highness
Princess Thi-Nga of
Vietnam
was the guest of honor at the event, held in the new Gallery Room at
the Shore Club Hotel in Miami Beach. Before introducing Commissioner Gongora,
Princess Thi-Nga, who serves as Chairman of the
Bass Museum
Board of Trustees, informed the crowd of approximately 200 supporters that she
is neither Democrat nor Republican. “I am obviously a Monarchist,” she
explained. But she assured the gathering that the Commissioner had her full
support
in his re-election bid. Gongora, an attorney with the firm of Becker & Playoff,
currently fills the Miami Beach Group 5 seat. Gongora was elected last November
to complete the last year of Commissioner Luis Garcia’s term and is running
again for a full four-year-term. Gongora will be facing Edward Tobin, an
attorney with the Miami Beach firm of Rather & Tobin and Ivor Rose, a Miami
Beach property owner. The fundraiser was co-hosted by Miami notables as
Michael Capponi, Tim Nardi, Todd & Corey Narson, Dan Sehres,
Matthew Sarelson, Nick & Joy Spill, Mark Tamis, and Ray
Breslin. Breslin, President of the Collins Avenue Association, lauded
Commissioner Gongora as a concerned and responsive elected official. “Though
I’ve financially contributed to many local campaigns, this is the first time I
have hosted a fundraiser,” Breslin said. “Michael has stepped up to the
plate and supported every commission vote regarding Collins Park.” Breslin
shared that Gongora was the only candidate in the previous election that
exhibited a genuine interest in Breslin’s neighborhood and even attended several
neighborhood membership meetings.
Campaign officials report
that the fundraiser generated over $7000 for Gongora’s re-election bid
and the commissioner expressed his appreciation in an email to supporters. “I
am both flattered and humbled by the outreach of support for my re-election and
the diversity of friends and supporters that turned out for this event,” Gongora
said. “Together we will secure a full four year term to accomplish the quality
of life platform that we started last year,” he continued.

A majority
of Americans believe that gays and lesbians could not change their sexuality |
|
A poll
released last week shows that for the first time a majority of Americans
believe that gays and lesbians could not change their sexuality even if they
wanted to. The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll found that 56
percent of respondents do not believe sexual orientation can be
changed. That is a marked change in the past six years. A 2001 CNN/USA
Today/Gallup poll found only 45 percent of respondents believed
sexuality was unchangeable and in 1998 a CNN/Time poll the number was 36
percent. When asked whether homosexuality is nature or nurture the 515
people surveyed in the new poll respondents were more closely divided.
Forty-two percent of respondents to the current poll said they believe
homosexuality is the result of upbringing or environment, while 39 percent
said they believe it is genetic. Similar polls in the 1970s and 1980 found
fewer than 20 percent of Americans believed said a person is born
homosexual. The survey is the latest in a series of recent polls showing
public support growing for gays and lesbians. A poll conducted last month
found that 79 percent support gays serving openly in the military. A second
poll conducted in May found that a majority believed same-sex couples should
be recognized but were almost equally divided on whether that should be
marriage or civil unions. Forty-three percent opposed both. On the topic of
adoption, however, 57 percent said same-sex couples should be allowed to
adopt children. |

An open letter from
Michael C. Hardy, president and CEO of Carnival Center |
 |
“On
Tuesday, June 26 the Miami-Dade County Commission voted
unanimously to approve additional funds to cover an inaugural year of
higher-than-projected operating costs at Carnival Center for the Performing
Arts. The staff, our boards,
our volunteers and the 300,000 people who’ve attended this year’s shows and
events at the Center are deeply grateful to the Commissioners for their votes,
as well as to the offices of Mayor Carlos Alvarez and County Manager
George Burgess for their support and guidance. As we prepare for our second
year of operation, we pledge to the elected officials and citizens of
Miami-Dade
County that we will build upon what we have learned and add to our many
successes so that the generous public support we have consistently received will
be both justified and rewarded. I personally encourage all Miami-Dade residents
and visitors to attend some of the hundreds of theater, music and dance events
that will be offered next season at
Carnival
Center, whether you will be returning or coming for the first time. See for
yourselves the many wonderful and diverse shows and concerts that this beautiful
center has to offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed in the quality of the
shows, the beauty and elegance of the facilities, the magnificence of the
acoustics, and (what may surprise you) the availability and convenience of
parking in nearby surface lots and valet for all performances. Thank you all
once again for your support of
Miami’s
now, nine-month old performing arts center.” |

GLCC Demolishes New Site And Evaluates Construction
Options
|
|
The
Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida
(GLCC) Board of Directors proudly announces the June 20 demolition of several
buildings on the East side of Andrews Avenue, the future site of the new GLCC
facility. “The timing of this demolition, days before our local Gay Pride
Celebration and the Stonewall Street Festival, could not have been better,”
reports Paul Hyman, Executive Director of the GLCC. “This demolition
marks a critical and exciting step for
Broward County and the whole
of South Florida, clearing the path for us to demonstrate the huge role and
influence of the local GLBT population with an appropriately visible and
beautiful new facility.”
Hyman has been quietly recruiting individuals, and building teams of local
community leaders and specialists in areas ranging from architecture to legal
affairs, to fund-raising and marketing, in preparation for the new growth phase
for the organization. He went on to say, “Our investment of time and emphasis
on planning these first steps were critical and extremely successful. Now, with
a solid base of resources in place, we are moving forward strategically to
continue to deliver the critical programs and services we provide to those in
need in our community. We will not lose focus on the people we serve on a daily
basis while we create our new home.” One of the new resources is the
Building Committee, which Hyman recommended to the board. Its sole focus is to
oversee the building of the new facility. The committee reports to the GLCC
Board of Directors. “The Building Committee’s expertise ranges from local
financial planning and real estate professionals, to legal counsel, architects
and space planners, all working together to oversee details,” reports
Jerry Algozer, President of the GLCC Board of Directors. He continued, “We
are extremely fortunate to have a wealth of expertise and passion serving on the
Building Committee to protect our interests and provide strategic
recommendations to the Board.” Tyler Healis, Chairman of the
Building Committee, adds “The Committee is charged with assuring that the
needs of the community are met in the new building. We are also focused on the
details of our relationship and contract with Tarragon Corporation, the
developer, whom purchased the existing GLCC building.”
Central to the GLCC’s analysis and decision-making is
the option of completing its building project with modified or reduced
involvement from Tarragon Corporation. States Jerry Algozer, GLCC
Board President, “We are engaging Tarragon in some amicable and preliminary
conversations which may lead to the GLCC proceeding more independently with the
new building project. Were we to do so, we would take clear title to the new
site now, along with a financial disbursement from Tarragon, as provided for in
our contract. We continue to have positive communications and cooperation with
Tarragon as we generate plans to proceed with the new facility.” To
support the Building Committee and further protect the community and Center’s
interests, Hyman has also strengthened the GLCC’s existing legal expertise by
retaining the services of Warren Kozlow, Esq. “Warren is instrumental
in analyzing and overseeing the legal aspects of our continuing meetings and
dialogue with Tarragon Corporation as well as safeguarding our financial
position.” says Hyman. The new facility is currently planned to consist of
18,000 square feet on three floors. It will provide accommodations in its
meeting rooms for over 50 different community groups currently utilizing the
existing space each month ranging from HIV and AIDS support groups, and
neighborhood associations, to more social and cultural organizations such as
12-Step groups, SAGE, and a women’s rap group. The facility also provides room
for expansion to meet future needs. The site is located on the East side of
Andrews Avenue, directly across from the current site on some of the most
desirable and centrally located real estate allowing people to watch the
progress moving forward. Darcy Beeman, the Vice President of the Board,
speaks to the enthusiasm and teamwork at the GLCC. “We have some incredible
individuals in our local GLBT community who have stepped forward and are
providing expertise, financial support and passion to make sure we set new
standards and exceed expectations in a way that will make the community very
proud,” she commented. Marketing and Public Relations Committee has been
created “to shift these critical responsibilities from GLCC staff to allow
them to focus more directly on improving the lives of those in need, as well as
reaching out and communicating with our donor community,” says Hyman.
Rick Gibson, who serves on the GLCC Board and Chairs the Marketing and PR
Committee, shares “The central location of the new building and the
incredible range of programs and services of the GLCC are a tremendous basis
from which to grow an already remarkable organization. This new facility will
provide our GLBT community a meeting place and resource it deserves, visitors a
source for information, and all of us a local venue to meet and celebrate our
uniquely diverse culture”. The GLCC is a non-profit organization, providing
information, education, advocacy, support, human services, cultural experiences,
and social opportunities to foster personal development and quality of life for
the entire community. For more information about the GLCC’s plans or to learn
ways individuals or businesses can provide support, please contact Robert Boo,
Director of Development at the GLCC at 954-463-9005 or
