Cyndi
Lauper to perform at Gay Games
VII Sports & Cultural
Festival |
|
Chicago
organizers of the Gay Games
VII
Sports & Cultural Festival announced today that Cyndi Lauper will perform at
the Gay Games
VII Closing
Ceremony on Saturday, July 22. The ceremony will take place at historic
Wrigley Field, the home of baseball's Chicago Cubs. Tickets are
$50 to $90 and are on sale at Tickets.GayGamesChicago.org. Gay Games
VII will host 12,000 participants and tens of
thousands of family, friends and fans from some 70 countries in
Chicago July
15-22. "I feel like this is becoming sort of a tradition for me since I
performed last time the Gay Games were in the States, in New York City in 1994,"
said Lauper. "I am thrilled to be a part of the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago."
Lauper joins a slate of more than 60 music, television, arts, culture and sports
legends from around the world performing in the 2006 Gay Games Opening & Closing
Ceremonies. "I have always felt that much of Cyndi Lauper's music is a
personal anthem of love and support for the world's lesbian & gay community,"
said Greg McNitt, Gay Games Ceremony Committee Co-Chair. "Whether in
her music or through her support of organizations like PFLAG (Parents, Families
& Friends of Lesbians and Gays) or the Matthew Shephard Foundation, her work is
so moving in part because it obviously represents her own true colors; her
belief that everyone is beautiful, 'like a rainbow.' Her appearance at Wrigley
Field is going to bring the house down!" |

time they listen to it. We are also proud to partner with such a great community
supporter like Centaur Entertainment." Under the direction of DJ/producer
Randy Bettis, the new GayDays CD boasts an award-winning lineup of artists
performing songs that are fun and familiar. As a former Disney and Broadway
performer, Bettis understands how to captivate and entertain an audience. Now
as an accomplished DJ/producer, Bettis' musical intuition has created a

A Month of
Pride at the Stonewall Library & Archives |
|
 |
|
They start this June with the good news that
The
Broward
County Commissioners, Cultural Affairs Division is sponsoring their movie series throughout the summer.
Thanks to our generous and forward looking Commissioners, we are proud to offer
the PRIDE month to remember. On Friday, June 2, at
7PM
with a suggested Donation of $2 they present “The Boys in the Band”….it’s
not a musical. Its Harold’s birthday and his friends have ‘bought’ him a
present. The story is about a birthday party staged by a group of gay men. An
old college friend of the host drops in unexpectedly with disastrous results.
The characters are miserable and bitchy towards each other and themselves. Yet,
the film was groundbreaking as being the first mainstream Hollywood film to
focus on the lives of gay
men. The film almost got an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of
America but after some scenes were deleted it was given an R rating. Quote:
“What is he a psychiatrist or a hairdresser? “Both, first he shrinks my head
then he combs it out.” Then on Friday, June 9, at 7PM with a Suggested
Donation of $2 they present “Sticks and Stones” This ultra-rare gay party
film shows us the hedonistic, no-worries, pre-AIDS world of
Fire Island and is a fascinating time capsule of a
film. This film also appears to be missing from Vito Russo's "Celluloid Closet"
book on gay cinema. The theme song "Let it always be summer"
comes across as a kind of commentary on the characters, who desire to be young
and attractive and enjoy themselves for as long as they can. The dialogue can be
hard to hear at times, but there are some wonderful moments - the ultra-camp guy
who tries to change a tire being one of the more memorable scenes - I was
laughing along with him, not at him. Then on
Friday, June 16, at
6.30PM they present the Opening reception for “Pride; Party or
Protest?” The Stonewall Library in partnership with One and Ten and
The Museum Project of Washington, DC is proud to present “Pride: Party or
Protest?”, a history of Gay Pride celebrations both around the country and South
Florida. Please join us for the opening night reception @ The Stonewall Library
1717 N. Andrews Ave. Admission for the opening night is $5.00. The exhibit will
be open to the public at no charge from Monday, June 19th through July 30th
in the Stonewall Library. This event is sponsored in part by The Broward County
Commission, Cultural Affairs Division and Home Lenders Mortgage. Then on
Friday, June 23, at
7PM with a suggested Donation of $2 presents “Mango Kiss”
"Mango Kiss" is a story about Lou whose world turns upside-down when she falls
in love with her best friend Sassafras. They journey to
San Francisco and
stumble into the wild world of role-playing and non-monogamous S/M dykes. Comedy
ensues as these wholesome girls get in over their heads. Quotes: “You know the
old joke about the difference between lesbians dating and gay boys dating?”
“What do gay boys bring on the second date?” “What second date?” “What do
lesbians bring on the second date?” “A U-Haul.” The on Friday, June 30,
at 7PM with a Suggested Donation of $2 they present “Before Stonewall”
New York City's Stonewall Inn is regarded by many as the site of gay and lesbian
liberation since it was at this bar that drag queens fought back against police
June 27-28, 1969. This documentary uses extensive archival film, movie clips and
personal recollections to construct an audiovisual history of the gay community
before the Stonewall riots. It features many brave individuals who risked life
and limb back in the "dark ages" by even broaching the subject of homosexuality
in the open. Many viewers will find revelations here that are fascinating, for
example how World War II, of all things, served to end the isolation felt by
many gays who fought and served back then. It deserves a wide audience. |
