Wrap-Up of Events |
|
On
Monday, May 14th
and Tuesday May 15th
Alison Thomas
produced the first
Miss Universal Icon Pageant
in Miami’s own
Mansion Nightclub.
There were 8 very qualified contestants, but in the end the winner was
Kym Moore
of Puerto Rico. A special shout goes out to
Vegas Dion
who wore a Creative Evening Wear that brought the entire audience to their feet
cheering!!! Congrats goes out to Alison, Danny and the entire Universal Icon
pageantry system on a great first year!!!
Last Friday
night Boulevard Nightclub reopened its doors to the Gay community.
Promoter/DJ Lazzaro Leon brought in several super-hot go-go boys that
took it all off and left nothing to the imagination. For those of you that have
never been in this huge former movie theater turned nightclub, we suggest you
give it a go. In addition to the fully nude go-go boys, look for appearances by
some of South Florida's biggest DJs.
Saturday
night Italian sensation Alex Baresi appeared at Discotekka in
downtown Miami. On hand were hundreds of fans and revelers who were treated to
what can only be described as the live show to end all shows. For those of you
who have never been, the club turns it out week after week with DJ Jarel
and some of Miami's favorite personalities including Milancita, Poison Ivy
and Vegas Dion.
Also
Saturday night Lynne Bove of icandee productions treated the
ladies to a live performance by Latin singer Sol upstairs at Score's
Creme Lounge. The weekly party, dubbed "Siren" is a great way to end
a week and always packs the house. Ladies enter the all girl party through the
Creme Lounge entrance, but have their full run of the nightclub and can join the
boys downstairs on the dance floor whenever they want. Congrats to Lynne on
another great week of Siren.

Two More Shows
Added To "An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" at the Colony
|
On
Friday July 27th at 7:30pm and 10pm, and Saturday July 28th
at 7:30pm and 10pm, Sandra Bernhard will perform at the historic
Colony Theater on Lincoln Road. A portion of the proceeds from these four
performances will benefit Switchboard of Miami's GLBT Suicide Awareness
Initiative. For 25 years, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and
critics with her knife-edged humor, satire and emotive performances on film,
television and stage. "An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" includes comedy,
commentary and music, and Bernhard appears with musical director/pianist, Mitch
Kaplan and her band. The SF Weekly praised Bernhard, "One moment, her voice
is lulling you into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back several
rows with it." Bernhard's last show, "Hero Worship," featured a five
piece band and was a post September 11th tribute to Bernhard's commitment to
irony - that it, too, has survived September 11th. The show featured a range of
musical numbers (some original and some covers). It was a fearless attempt to
show that life must continue and the show must go on. Other notable performances
include her participation in the "Stormy Weather Benefit '98," organized by
Don Henley, which also featured Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell,
as well as "The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Cares." Her critically
acclaimed 1998, one-woman Broadway hit, "I'm Still Here Damn It!" which
played the Booth Theater, had critics raving. Created and conceived by Bernhard,
the show first ran for five months off-Broadway at New York's Westbeth Theatre,
where it garnered ecstatic reviews. The New York Times called Bernhard's
performance "An angst driven, foul-mouthed poison-laced joy ride that banks
and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity, rock, and
religion. In her own voice, unfiltered, Bernhard is a living, breathing bonfire."
The show went on to play sold-out runs in Boston and San Francisco, and one of
the Bay Area performances was filmed for an HBO special "I'm Still Here Damn
It!" which aired in the summer of 1998) photographed by cinematographer
Haskel Wexler, and produced and directed by Marty Callner. Since her
first film accolades in 1983 in Martin Scorseses', "The King of Comedy"
featuring Jerry Lewis and Robert De Niro, Bernhard has since
appeared in numerous films including "Inside Monkey Zetterland," "Hudson
Hawk" and more recently, "Dinner Rush." Throughout her career,
Bernhard's formidable presence has also had a place on television. From
1991-1996, she portrayed Nancy on "Roseanne," and has had guest starring
roles on "Ally McBeal," "Chicago Hope" and "Will & Grace."
She has appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman," as well as "The
Tonight Show," "Rosie O'Donnell" and "The View." She hosted
the season premiere of "MadTV" and the Bravo network recently profiled
her career. In 2001, Bernhard hosted her own talk show, "The Sandra Bernhard
Experience" for A&E television. Along with writing for performance, Bernhard
has put her musings into book form. Currently working on her fourth collection,
her books, just as her shows, are full of personal insights, introspective
rants, prose and essays. She made her publishing debut in 1987 with "Confessions
of a Pretty Lady" and followed that up with "Love, Love, and Love."
Her third book, "May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra?" was published
in 1998, prior to her Broadway run. Her work has also been published in numerous
magazines, including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler,
Rolling Stone, Interview, Spy, Elle and Allure. Tickets may be purchased on

Live From Jordan: Letters
Home from My Journey Through the Middle East |
|
Meet Benjamin
Orbach Reading and discussing “Live
From Jordan: Letters Home from My Journey Through the Middle East”
on Wednesday, May 23,
at
7:30pm at
Books & Books,
Bal Harbour Shops On the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, 27-year old
Pittsburgh native and grad student
Benjamin Orbach traveled to Amman, Jordan, in search of answers.
Young, confident, and optimistic, Orbach anointed himself
America’s
secret diplomatic weapon. He was finishing a degree in Middle Eastern studies,
had a working knowledge of Arabic, and possessed the determination to "negotiate
a peace treaty." He
also
had no place to live, little money, and no friends to speak of in Jordan. As Ben
Orbach spent his first few days in the
Middle East in search of a hot shower, the address of his new flat,
and a decent haircut, he began to discover something much more important. In the
cafes and salons, and on the buses and streets of
Jordan, Egypt, Syria,
Palestine, and Turkey, he found conflicted, curious, and multilayered people who
had more to teach him than he ever imagined. From bustling bazaars to an
underground brothel, Live from Jordan
is the incredible story, told via his eloquent, compassionate, and
irreverent letters home, of Orbach’s 13-month journey through the Middle East.
Through Orbach’s eyes, we begin to see a world where nothing is quite what it
seems, a world that is more intricate than what is portrayed in 30-second sounds
bites on American television. Engaging, witty, and evocative,
Live from Jordan is a
myth-breaking book that transports us to a world that is more multifaceted, more
beautiful, and more seductive than many of us have ever imagined.

Suzanne Palmer and Danielle Bollinger, as well as the infectious new hit "Turn
It Up." "My goal was an uplifting tea dance vibe," claims Randy
Bettis. "A CD that would give each listener a dance-music experience that

2 at the Royal Palms Hotel to promote the new CD and kick off the
2007 GayDays Tour which will visit 20 cities around the country this summer.

Orlando. Participants wear red and are encouraged to be seen. Local businesses,
from Disney World to area bars and restaurants open their hearts and minds
specifically to the gay community. Dance parties, swim and cruise events, park
visits and nightly bar specials make this event a major destination for the
summer of 2007. Party Groove: GayDays Volume 4 will be available in
stores nationwide May 29, including Virgin Megastore, Best Buy and online at
