Last Week Wrapped Up |
|
A week
ago Saturday I headed out to Boardwalk and once again it was filled with
some of the hottest strippers in
South Florida for
our viewing pleasure. The place was jumping and the music by Gary Nolan
was hot!! Sol Delight was hostessing, and as usual was fabulous on the
microphone making sure everyone was having fun.
A week
later I went down to Discotekka which is turning out to be the happening
Gay Saturday place in downtown
Miami. Packed
with cute boys and the hot house music by DJ Jarel, this place was
slamming. That night there were performances by Vegas Dion, Gina Di’Angelo
and Video Star Jake Dekkard.
Jake Dekkard also performed the next day at Voodoo Lounge for
T-dance and the crowd was nothing less then enthusiastic. DJ Billy Hallquist
was spinning in the main room, DJ Miik on the patio and DJ Jarel
in the Latin Room. Amanda West did 2 hotspots and followed the second one
with the very hot Hot Butt Contest.
Also
on Sunday I stopped by Windamar Beach Resort to see my friend Michael
(GM). Windamar sells day passes every day, but on Saturday and Sundays its $20
and includes entrance, a towel, Use of their pool and Jacuzzi, Free Burgers, Hot
Dogs, Soda’s, Beers, and entrance to their Video Lounge. The pool area, which is
clothing optional, was busy all afternoon. Pictured are Nick and Gerry,
who are in visiting from
Canada, and are
both Massage Therapists offer a 4 handed massage at a reasonable rate. To book
them, or for more information, call the Windamar at

Sidelines Sports Bar Celebrates It’s
One Year Anniversary |
|
On
May 12, 2006, Sidelines Sports Bar opened its doors for business
as Fort Lauderdale’s first gay sports bar. Next month, Sidelines will
celebrate its one year anniversary – and what a year it has been! The club
received such a warm welcome from the local GLBT community in those early days;
it even astounded its management. Each week more and more people were finding
out about this new bar that catered to gay sports fans. Each weekend, sales
grew, exceeding the week’s prior business. Gay men and women came out to either
watch their home teams play on one of the club’s huge flat-screen TV’s,
challenge a friend to a round of pool or darts, or simply sit with friends over
a cocktail to discuss the day’s events. This became the mantra for Sidelines’
customers, a place where one could feel “normal”, comfortable, relaxed and just
have fun.
That’s what garnered Sidelines Sports Bar the “Best
Neighborhood Bar” distinction by the readers of Express Gay News.
The owners and staff of Sidelines Sports Bar are so grateful and appreciative to
have such a solid core of regular and loyal customers that they have planned an
extraordinary anniversary party. The celebration will extend over two days,
Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th.
Anniversary drink specials will be offered all day and all night, from open to
close, and include
3-4-1 on all well cocktails and draft beer; and 2-4-1 on all other drinks and
bottled beer. Sidelines Sports Bar will also open its pool tables and dart
boards for FREE play, all day and all night, from open to close. And if that’s
not enough, on Saturday, May 12th the club will serve an open buffet
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Of course, a party would not be a party without
giveaways, raffle drawings, and special gifts. “We still can’t believe a year
has passed by”, smiled owner Laurie Whittaker. “It’s been a wild
and crazy year, full of lessons learned and huge successes. But most of all,
it’s been the friends we’ve made, the people we met and the warmth we have felt
during this past year that continues to make it all worthwhile”. Sidelines
Sports Bar, with its 16 flat-screen TVs, 3 pool tables, 3 dartboards, and free
foosball table, continues to provide a fun, friendly and comfortable environment
for gay men and women who enjoy all kinds of sports. Sidelines Sports Bar is
located at 2031-A Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, Florida. Their telephone number
is (954) 563-8001 or you can also visit them online at

In Debt We Trust: America Before the Bubble Bursts |
|
The documentary film “In Debt We Trust:
America Before the Bubble Bursts” has sparked a national campaign against
credit card rip offs, shady payday loans and mortgage scandals. With the
country facing record foreclosures and the first negative savings rate since the
Depression, this investigative film targets “financialization” and calls people
to action. The film will screen in Fort Lauderdale at 7:00pm on April 30
and May 1 at the Cinema Paradiso and will be followed by a Q&A
and panel discussion with Harriet Brackey, finance writer for the
Sun-Sentinel; Lisa Ware, a banking VP who handles financial education for
residents of a homeless shelter; and others. The discussion will be moderated
by Barbara Babcock, Educator/Manager, Consumer Credit Counseling Service
of South Florida. Big banks, credit card companies and fly-by-night lenders have
buried many unsuspecting Americans in debt by using deceptive interest rates
that quickly skyrocket, big late fees, and other tricks. Half of consumers don’t
pay off their credit cards each month, and the average household owes $30,000 in
consumer debt. “In Debt We Trust” shows how debt is strangling the lives of tens
of millions of Americans. It also discusses how power is being consolidated into
fewer and fewer hands by a credit and loan complex not unlike the
military-industrial complex. This is called the “financialization” of
America –-
producing a kind of modern serfdom and widening the gap between the haves and
have-nots. The film
also examines how exorbitant interest rates grew in an unregulated environment,
including payday loans that charge 10% fees each week, equal to an annual
interest rate of well over 500%. It shows how people are tricked into going
deeply into debt at interest rates so high they can never pay it off. The movie
is launching in April and May with two-day theater bookings in New York,
Rochester, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and other cities, with church and
college screenings and living room parties being organized nationwide. The
88-minute documentary by award winning investigative journalist and “News
Dissector” Danny Schechter (“WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception,” former producer for ABC News
and CNN) is being distributed to theaters and communities as part of a new
national campaign, Americans for Debt Relief Now. This campaign aims to help
Americans win freedom from the desperation of this overwhelming debt and
features many of the country’s top consumer organizations and debt experts. The
campaign offers a website, www.StopTheSqueeze.org,
stocked with 10 tips developed with Dr. Robert Manning, author of Credit
Card Nation that debtors can use to recover their finances, their lives and the
fabric of our nation from the debt-industrial complex. In
Los Angeles, American Baptist
and African Methodist Episcopal congregations are joining the campaign to show
the film, while across the country, church-led “debt revivals” try to help
congregants escape debt traps from which there is seemingly no way out. In Debt
We Trust challenges the values of a consumer culture that seduces the public
into turning a blind eye to: The exorbitant interest rates charged on payday
loans to our nation’s soldiers, some over 500%; New bankruptcy rules that make
it harder for Americans to get a second chance, and have actually disqualified
Hurricane Katrina flood victims from filing for debt relief; Practices that
trick individuals into turning their homes into ATM machines by parlaying
existing debt into still more debt; A majority of college students that graduate
over $20,000 in the red—and that’s just consumer debt, not including $30,000 in
typical student loans—contributing to total national consumer debt that has
climbed past $3 trillion; and, Lobbyists for big money funds who work to stop
Congress from regulating usurious interest rates that lead to home-improvement
mortgage scams, a wave of foreclosures and the resulting gentrification of poor
neighborhoods. “The banks, the credit card companies, the lenders all extend
easy credit and portray it as a necessary practice for modern life,” says
film producer and director Danny Schechter. “The problem arises when
these companies later demand their pound of flesh from a public groaning under
the weight of all this debt.” Cinema Paradiso

Sandra
Bernhard at Colony Theater
|
|
On Saturday July 28th at
7:30pm and
10pm, Sandra Bernhard will perform at the historic
Colony Theater on
Lincoln Road.
A portion of the proceeds from these two performances will benefit
Switchboard of Miami’s GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative. For 25 years,
Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and critics with her knife-edged
humor, satire and emotive performances on film, television and stage. "An
Evening with Sandra Bernhard" includes comedy, commentary and music, and
Bernhard appears with musical director/pianist, Mitch Kaplan and her
band. The SF Weekly praised Bernhard, "One moment, her voice is lulling you
into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back several rows with it."
Bernhard's last show, "Hero Worship," featured a five piece band and was
a post September 11th tribute to Bernhard's commitment to irony - that it, too,
has survived September 11th. The show featured a range of musical numbers (some
original and some covers). It was a fearless attempt to show that life must
continue and the
show
must go on. Other notable performances include her participation in the "Stormy
Weather Benefit '98," organized by Don Henley, which also featured
Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell, as well as "The Elton John Tribute
for Broadway Cares." Her critically acclaimed 1998, one-woman Broadway hit,
"I'm Still Here Damn It!" which played the Booth Theater, had critics
raving. Created and conceived by Bernhard, the show first ran for five months
off-Broadway at
New York's
Westbeth Theatre, where it garnered ecstatic reviews. The New York Times called
Bernhard's performance "An angst driven, foul-mouthed poison-laced joy ride
that banks and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity,
rock, and religion. In her own voice, unfiltered, Bernhard is a living,
breathing bonfire." The show went on to play sold-out runs in Boston and San
Francisco, and one of the Bay Area performances was filmed for an HBO special
"I'm Still Here Damn It!" which aired in the summer of 1998) photographed by
cinematographer Haskel Wexler, and produced and directed by Marty
Callner. Since her first film accolades in 1983 in Martin Scorseses',
"The King of Comedy" featuring Jerry Lewis and Robert De
Niro, Bernhard has since appeared in numerous films including "Inside
Monkey Zetterland," "Hudson Hawk" and more recently, "Dinner
Rush." Throughout her career, Bernhard's formidable presence has also
had a place on television. From 1991-1996, she portrayed
Nancy
on "Roseanne," and has had guest starring roles on "Ally McBeal,"
"Chicago Hope" and "Will & Grace." She has appeared on "Late
Night with David Letterman," as well as "The Tonight Show," "Rosie
O'Donnell" and "The View." She hosted the season premiere of "MadTV"
and the Bravo network recently profiled her career. In 2001, Bernhard hosted her
own talk show, "The Sandra Bernhard Experience" for A&E television. Along
with writing for performance, Bernhard has put her musings into book form.
Currently working on her fourth collection, her books, just as her shows, are
full of personal insights, introspective rants, prose and essays. She made her
publishing debut in 1987 with "Confessions of a Pretty Lady" and followed
that up with "Love, Love, and Love." Her third book, "May I Kiss You
on the Lips, Miss Sandra?" was published in 1998, prior to her Broadway run.
Her work has also been published in numerous magazines, including The New
Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Rolling Stone, Interview, Spy, Elle
and Allure. The mission of the GLBT SAI is to save lives by raising
awareness of suicide, depression other mental health related issues that impact
the GLBT community in Miami-Dade County. Their dedicated hotline 305-646-3600,
available 24/7, is staffed with trilingual counselors (English, Spanish, and
Creole) that are ready to assist those in need and friends of those in need of
suicide prevention and crisis intervention. The GLBT
SAI has saved over 32 lives with direct
intervention provided through the hotline and is receiving over 25-30 calls each
month. Switchboard of
Miami
has placed a series of print media "info ads" targeting those at risk and
friends of those at risk. These ads have been seen by over 30,000 people in
various GLBT publications raising awareness of suicide and the availability of
the hotline. At a 30 percent greater risk of suicide than its heterosexual
counterpart, the GLBT population is exposed to a lethal combination of high-risk
behaviors including drug use, sexual promiscuity, high HIV infection rates,
social rejection, conflict between sexual orientation and religious beliefs,
financial hardships, loneliness and depression. "Bringing the topic of
suicide out of the closet will be an important outcome of the initiative"
says Yocasta Juliao, Director of Helpline Services at Switchboard of
Miami. Tickets will go on sale through Ticketmaster.com on May 1st or
by calling Ticketmaster at 305-358-5885 To avoid the service charges Tickets may
