Last Week Wrapped Up |
|
On
Sunday April 1
the boys of Florida
Storm Soccer team
had another one of their now famous Pool Parties….this was their 4th
anniversary Pool Party to benefit the team at the
Villa Venice Guest house
on Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beach. The party was from
12
to
5pm
and included food, music, 1 free drink and a whole lot of fun with cute boys. As
you can see from this pic there were lots of cute guys. If you want to see all
the pics
Last
Tuesday, April 3rd
my friend
Richard Kortez began his weekly Tuesday
show at Dudes. He sings a mix of
originals and classic favorites and has a distinctive wit that makes him a whole
lot of fun on the microphone. He was definitely born to be an entertainer!!!
Last
Thursday, April 5,
Russ
Johansen
(co-owner of Steel/Jackhammer) celebrated his birthday at the club with a
special show by
Cashetta,
as well as lots of give-a-ways and drink specials. We here at
Marks List
would like to wish Russ many more birthdays as well as much more success with
his already successful businesses.
Last Saturday night the Dean and Lee
took over Scandals Saloon. Scandals has become a regular watering
hole for the Country Western crowd and last weekend was no exception!
Hundreds of cowboys and a few
cowgirls turned out for what can
only be described as one hell of a Hoedown.
Congratulations to Ken and Lloyd, Manager Howard Merrit and
Staff and of course the stars of the show Dean and Lee for showing the town
a great time. Yeee-Haw.
Also On Saturday night I went down to
Miami where my
first stop was Sandals in
North Miami,
where Marytrini and
Adora put
on a rocking show for the Latin crowd. They
also just opened
a new room where they feature dancers
and
an outside area where they sell Empanadas.
The next stop was the new club Discotekka, which on Saturday
is hosted by Vegas Dion and stars DJ Jarel. Also in the show were
Gina Di’Angelo and Maite West. As soon as I walked in I saw
co-owner Wendy, who was so gracious to not only buy me a drink but make
it for me
herself (WOW was that a strong drink) and Danny Vilar (show Director) who
graciously gave me a tour of the club. This is a fun new spot to check out.
After Discotekka I headed over to Twilo to see my friend
DJ Pride in her monthly residency there. As usual she was keeping the boys
happy on the dance floor. |

Lesbian Women
Celebrate Gay Days
|
|
Here's a math equation that's truly sexy: Take 17 years
of Gay Day at Disney World, add three of the top women's
event promoters in the country and a national
beneficiary committed to lesbian issues, and multiply it
times four glorious days in Orlando. The result? More
than 7,000 women loving women converging in central
Florida from May 30 to June 3 for Girls in Wonderland,
the long-running series of parties from Alison Burgos
& Pandora Events dedicated to entertaining the
estrogen set and raising money for the National
Center for Lesbian Rights. "We're excited that
this will be our biggest year ever," said Girls in
Wonderland
co-founder Alison Burgos. "The host hotel is already
sold out, and we've added a second property. It's
amazing to see how our Gay Day events unite the women's
community." The seventh annual events take their
cues from last year's success story and ramp up the
action another notch. That means more bikini-clad bodies
at the pool parties, more gyrating forms on the dance
floor at House of Blues for Girls in Wonderland
7, and more hot performances courtesy of the She Rock
All-Star Concert. Burgos and her producing partners
Yesi Leon and Amy Alonso are also focusing
on gay parents this year with their special kid-friendly
weekend itinerary Gay Day Family (www.gaydayfamily.com).
Proceeds from
the
Girls in Wonderland weekend events will benefit NCLR,
a national legal resource center that advances the
rights and safety of lesbians and their families through
litigation, public policy, and education. NCLR also
provides representation and resources to gay men and
bisexual and transgender individuals on key issues that
support lesbian rights. Stay close to all the
festivities at the Fairfield Inn in Marriott Village,
8615 Vineland Ave., Lake Buena Vista. Rooms in the
co-host hotel are only $109 per night or $99 if you book
three consecutive nights. It's just a short walk from
the sold-out Courtyard Marriott, site of the welcome
reception and daily pool parties. Book online at
www.girlsinwonderland.com . |

Live Music at New Moon |
|
New Moon
and Alison Burgos are proud to present many evenings of live music. On
Sunday April 22nd at 8pm they feature Edie Carey.
For those of you that have been around the Moon for a while - you might remember
Edie being the FIRST live performance they ever had almost two years ago and
they are thrilled to have her back! She's just released her fourth studio
album, “Another Kind of
Fire”,
the Boston-based folk-pop singer-songwriter explores the myriad kinds of "fire"
- romantic and otherwise - that keep us burning below the surface: old
resentments, creativity, anger, lost friendships, lust, and, of course, love.
Check out more of her music at
www.ediecarey.com.
On Sunday May 6th
at
8pm they present Deb Hunseder. That's right ladies: that Deb - you know
the one that is 1/2 of Halcyon! She is hanging with them solo for the evening.
In her own words, "1/2 of Halcyon (since 1989), the harmonizing, wise
cracking, duo that became a success in spite of itself. All grown up now,
heading into peri-menopause, and still singing for my supper..." Check out
Deb's stuff at
www.myspace.com/debhunseder.
Also Every Saturday at 9pm they feature Bev McClellan. They are excited
to have this full rockin' band. Bev's voice has never boomed louder than having
a full band backing her up every Saturday night at New Moon! If you have not
heard these guys play check them out it is so worth it! www.myspace.com/beverlyshane.
At New Moon there is never a cover! |

North Miami
Councilman Galvin Re-Elected Without Opposition |
|
Because no opponent filed to run against him by the April 3rd
deadline, North Miami City Councilman Scott Galvin was automatically
re-elected this week to a third four-year term. Galvin has served as a
councilman since 1999. Galvin became
North Miami's
first openly-gay councilmember in 2004, when he came out. With this victory, he
also becomes the first openly-gay councilmember in the city to be re-elected.
Current Mayor Kevin Burns, who is also openly-gay, faces a challenge in
the upcoming May 8, election. "I can not thank North Miami enough
for the faith they have shown me by allowing me to continue to serve,"
said Galvin. Galvin campaigned on a platform highlighting the many positive
projects underway in
North Miami;
from construction of new schools and an Olympic Center to the expansion of MoCA.
In addition, he pointed out the hiring of new Code Enforcement officers and the
creation of the Code Enforcement Director position, both projects he initiated.
"I will continue to work for North Miami as passionately as I always have,"
stated Galvin. "Together, we are making North
Miami the envy of
South Florida!"

GLCC Travel Website |
|
GLCC
of
Fort Lauderdale
now has its own travel
website at
www.ytbtravel.com/glccsf.
This new service is like having our own Expedia®
just for
GLCC supporters
and friends. Everything you need is right there. You get
access to the same airlines, hotels and rental car
companies, cruises flowers, concert tickets, golf times,
honeymoon registry and vacation packages you find on all
the other major travel websites, and, best of all...
you get some of the lowest travel prices on the
internet.
Getting great travel prices for you is
fantastic, right? But, how is this going to help raise
funds for the GLCC?
Here's How it Works - if you don't know, every time you use a travel
website like Expedia®, the travel companies pay big
commissions for your reservation.
Well, now when you book travel on the
GLCC website, the GLCC will get a whopping 40% of
those commissions.
Any way you look at it, this is a win-win
situation. You get great travel rates and you help
funnel dollars from the travel companies into the Gay
and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida to
advance their cause. With your help and other supporters
like you...they
can raise THOUSANDS of dollars for the Center to help support their Programs and
Services. I know you're probably in the middle of
planning your spring vacation or maybe looking ahead to
plan travel for the summer. Why not take the travel
website for a "test drive" right now? I'm sure you'll
like what you find. Use their new travel website and
while you are flying to some exotic locale, you'll know
you are supporting the GLCC! Oh, and one more thing,
please bookmark our new website. That way you'll be able
to use it anytime you need travel. |

South Florida
set come to see and be seen. The man behind Martini Tuesdays, Edison Farrow,
almost by accident, has become
South
Beach's most recognizable host. What started out as a small idea has turned into
a phenomenon for Farrow. It was never his intention to promote a huge party
every week. Martini Nights started out as a get together with some close
friends, after Farrow saw the need for an evening where gay professional men
could get together for a sophisticated evening, enjoy some mingling, relaxation
and conversation, without all the chaos of the bar and club scene. The
invitation list has now swelled to over 6,500 with an attendance of 200-350
people a week. There is no cover charge for this event. www.sobesocialclub.com/ |

Did you know that current federal hate crime laws don't
protect everyone? |
 |
|
We've had a
federal hate crimes law on the books since 1969, and it has never included
crimes targeting victims because of their gender, gender identity, sexual
orientation or disability. Congress is about to consider a bill that would
change that and ensure all bias motivated crimes based on a person's sexual
orientation, gender, gender identity, disability, race, religion, color and
national origin are covered. It would also help under funded law enforcement
officials investigate and prosecute hate crimes. Tell your representative to
support this bill at:
http://www.hrc.org/FightHate. Here's something else that shocked me: one in
six hate crimes are motivated by the victim's sexual orientation. The federal
government can't even investigate most of these crimes or help bring the
criminals to justice. That's outrageous! In past years, right wing groups have
successfully blocked attempts to expand hate crimes laws. They're gearing up for
another fight now, so we need to make sure our representatives do the right
thing and support this landmark law. Go to this website to send your message:
http://www.hrc.org/FightHate. In my mind, there's no question that including
hate crimes protections for GLBT Americans in federal law doesn't constitute
"special treatment," as some right wing groups would have us believe - there's
nothing special about wanting to live safely and without fear of violence.
That's something everyone deserves. Thanks for joining me. |

Fort
Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF)
The Millennium Club |
|
The Millennium Club, launched by Fort Lauderdale International
Film Festival (FLIFF) member John Mager, will
provide the Festival's year-round art-house, Cinema
Paradiso, with continued maintenance and
renovations to transform the historic building into, not
only an elegant theater, but one that is unique to our
South Florida lifestyle. The goals of the Millennium
Club will be divided into several phases, each designed
to both enhance the comfort and over-all experience for
the theater's current patrons, and to attract more
South Florida residents and visitors a like. "I
envision Cinema Paradiso, as a place to
meet friends, have a glass of wine, some appetizers, an
a relaxing chat in the courtyard before going to see a
good film," John Mager commented. Cinema Paradiso,
once the
Vinette Carol Theatre,
was originally built in 1929 as a Presbyterian Church.
The old-world charm of the theatre will remain in tact;
it's mahogany doors, its stained glass windows (one
which was replaced after Hurricane Wilma and recently
illuminated by the Millennium Club), but the front
facade will soon receive a fresh coat of paint and a new
lighted multi-color sign that brightly displays the name
Cinema Paradiso. Other initiatives designed to make the
building more of a multi-use facility include the
installation of pavers and a permanent canopy structure
on the west side of the building. To create a cinematic
tradition in FLIFF's art-house courtyard, and provide a
personal touch, The Millennium Club will initiate a
FLIFF Walk of Fame
in the patio. Members of the community will be able
to purchase a Spotlight Brick with their name. The brick
will become a part of the
FLIFF Walk of Fame. Spotlight
Bricks make wonderful gifts for occasions of giving like
Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries, Valentines Day and
other Holidays, or as a memorial and its a unique way to
show support for the arts. To add to the distinctiveness
of the project, FLIFF will feature bricks with the names
of prominent filmmakers and actors and the year they
visited Cinema Paradiso. Going forward, film goers can
be part of this exciting new tradition as FLIFF presents
each new celebrity special guest with
their own Spotlight Brick to be placed in the
FLIFF Walk of Fame. Bricks
will range from $75 to $100 and there are discounts for
a purchase of ten or more. Details can be found at
www.FLIFF.com or
call 954-525-3456. The Fort Lauderdale International
Film Festival (FLIFF) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit
organization dedicated to enriching the cultural
landscape of our community through the cinematic arts.
In addition to producing the annual Film Festival, FLIFF
offers exceptional year-round programming at Cinema
Paradiso and at venues throughout South Florida. Now
entering its 22ND year in 2007, FLIFF is one of the
nations top destination film festivals, the State of
Florida's
highest rated film festival, and is one of Broward
County's top rated cultural institutions. Cinema
Paradiso, which was recognized as the top Art house
Cinema in
South Florida by City link Magazine, operates on
year-round bases, showing independent films or hosting
special events daily.
The Millennium Club
Membership: As a lifetime member of The
Millennium Club, your name will be engraved on a 1.5 x
4.5 gold-plated name plate which will be permanently
mounted on a 2' x 3' black Mylar plaque in the lobby of
the theater. Membership fee is a $1,000 tax-deductible
donation. For those wanting to donate more or on a
regular basis, a star will be added below your name for
each additional $1,000 donation. Funds raised by the
Millennium Club will not be placed into the general
operating funds for FLIFF and Cinema Paradiso. The funds
will only be used to take this historic theater and
truly make it a jewel in the heart of
Fort Lauderdale.
