Caldwell
Theatre Company
2008 Summer Season |
|
|
Caldwell Theatre
Company
announces its 2008 Summer Season in its new Count de Hoernle Theater
featuring three fabulous plays, including a “musical cocktail,” an award-winning
drama and a romantic comedy the whole family will love. James Hindman’s
Pete ‘n’ Keely kicks off Caldwell’s Summer Season. A reunion of
America’s “swingin’ sweethearts” years after their much publicized breakup sets
the stage for two pros who entertain with song and dance. Carbonell
Award-winner Connie SaLoutis stars as Keely Stevens. Back by popular demand,
Pulitzer Prize-winning Doubt, a Parable returns as Caldwell’s
second summer show with its original cast that wowed critics and audiences alike
when Caldwell premiered the four-time Tony Award-winner in
South Florida
this past December. The hilarious Beau Jest closes Caldwell’s
Summer Season with the zany comedy about a single Jewish teacher, her gentile
boyfriend, the actor hired to play her Jewish beau at the home of her parents
during a Speed Seder, and the comedy of errors that result. Special Summer
Subscription Savings are available as are individual tickets.
Summer
Play #1 June 20 – July 6, Pete ‘n’ Keely A
Sparkling Musical Cocktail … On The Rocks By James Hindman. America’s
swingin’ sweethearts Pete Bartel and Keely Stevens reunite in 1968 for a
live television special. Their trip down memory lane evokes their musical
career in Las Vegas, on TV and at the top of the hit parade. But they
haven’t spoken in five years since their big breakup, and it’s anyone’s
guess what sparks will fly when the two appear on stage. Starring Carbonell
Award-Winning Connie Saloutis as Keely. Rex Reed said that “Pete
‘n’ Keely is Broadway in a bottle – the brightest, happiest, and most
entertaining little show in town.” New York Magazine’s John
Simon said that the show has a “stylishness and charm few if any of
today’s big Broadway musicals can begin to match,” and Newsday’s
Gordon Cox said, “It’ll knock your socks off!” Summer Play #2
August 1 – August 17, Doubt, A Parable Drama By
John Patrick Shanley is back by popular demand. Audiences and critics
alike raved when Doubt opened
Caldwell’s
Mainstage Season in its new theater this past December. Returning with the
cast that made magic in its South Florida Premiere at Caldwell, Doubt
features Pat Nesbit as Sister Aloysius, Terry Hardcastle as
Father Flynn, Pat Bowie (2007 Best Supporting Actress in a Play
Carbonell Award-Nominee for Doubt) as Mrs. Muller and Amy Montminy
as Sister James in this morality tale set in a 1964 Bronx Catholic School.
Doubt was the winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony
Awards, including Best Play. The Sun-Sentinel review, December 11,
2007 said “Caldwell’s Doubt casts absorbing spell of uncertainty,
” The Palm Beach Post review, December 11, 2007 “Clashes of Doubt
a fine debut for Caldwell’s new home,” and the Boca Raton Forum,
December 19, 2007 “A Gem in our own Backyard.” Summer Play #3
September 5 – September 21, Beau Jest Romantic Comedy By James
Sherman. This is a zany, slapstick comedy about a single Jewish
schoolteacher, her gentile boyfriend, her controlling parents, a “pretend”
Jewish boyfriend hired to impress the family as Dr. David Steinberg (but
he’s a gentile too), and a Speed Seder (you’ve heard of speed dating? Wait
until you see a Passover Seder on fast forward). When “the doctor” is asked
what type of surgery he performs, he answers casually, “Whatever comes up.
Hearts, brains.” Misunderstandings, double entendres and mistaken
identities make this a must-see comedy the whole family will love.
Theatermania raved that Beau Jest is “a delicious concept, ripe with
comic potential,” and it is a “fleet-footed farce with a heart of gold.”
Talkin’ Broadway said that Beau Jest “provides an intelligent and
warmly humorous evening of theater.” THREE PLAYS: $93 center & $84
non-center, TWO PLAYS: $70 center & $60 non-center, and INDIVIDUAL: $38
center & $34 non-center. BOX OFFICE 561-241-7432 or 877-245-7432 or buy

Dining OUT

The Birdcage
F ort
Lauderdale's long-time Gay go-go haven, Boardwalk bar, has a new restaurant
called
The Birdcage. Anyone that has been to this landmark and can
envision the exterior, the front corner by the entrance has been opened up
and a patio bar and restaurant has been added. Every detail has been
thought out with a sophisticated Key West feel and even through there are
only two tables inside and about seating for 20 around the bar, all the
outside tables have umbrellas and many are covered by a large retractable
awning.
Now the
best part, the food! With items like Shrimp Cocktail on the appetizer
menu and Kobe Beef
burgers on the
main menu, you can’t go wrong. After the opening on Valentines Day 2008, the
business has expanded and grown from opening just for Dinner to Lunch & Dinner.
Ok, with the burgers, you get a choice of cheese, but you also get amazing onion
rings, and French fries! I have also had the pleasure of ordering a wrap—that
you design yourself! They give you a card with check boxes and you
choose the type of meat vegetables, dressings and finally the wrap itself! They
also have the same idea with salads but if you don't like your selections,
expect sassiness from the Servers since you are the one that chose them!
This is
definitely one of the cutest eating establishments to hit Fort Lauderdale
restaurant society and with the accessibility and openness it looks like it
could be a definite “It” destination away from
Wilton Drive.

Pasha’s
Anyone
that has strolled up and down the pedestrian mall of South Beach called Lincoln
Road has probably seen a wonderfully decorated restaurant with blue and gold
accents. That restaurant is
Pasha’s.
A terrific Mediterranean themed eatery that gives you all the choices you could
wish for from a Genie Bottle. For those who did not know, the name Pasha is
given to high-ranking public figures and their cuisine depicts that attention to
detail. They want everyone to feel like a Pasha.
I
sampled both the Tabbouleh which was a delicious and fresh and still
managed to outshine my own homemade! I also had the Choban Salad which
is excellent for those who love things deep and green and bold and red while
tossed in olive oil. This salad has cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, onions, and
red bell peppers and is easily devoured within minutes. For the entrée I had
the Mixed Grill Shih Kebab which had peppers, onions, and both chicken
and filet mignon and is served with pitas, Tatziki and Aoli sauces, and white
rice.
The
restaurants are open early serving breakfast, then lunch and dinner and as late
as 1 AM for you late night snackers on the beach.
This is
definitely a wonderful place on Lincoln Road to sit back, relax, and daydream
that you are on a beach near the
Mediterranean. And when you come back to reality, you'll realize that
while you are not Tunisia, you are in one of the no less most beautiful places
in world, South Beach.

2008 Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival Launches Fort Lauderdale
Gay & Lesbian Film Festival |
|
|
The
acclaimed 10th Annual
Miami Gay & Lesbian Film
Festival,
presented by HBO has announced its Gala Screenings and Parties
during the 10-day event from April 25 to May 4. They are
also proud to also announce the
launch of the
Fort Lauderdale
Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, May 1 - May 4, 2008,
running parallel to the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
As part of their mission to
better serve Broward and
Palm Beach
Counties, the
Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
will spring to life across four concentrated days of films, parties and revelry.
The screenings
will take place throughout the Festival at
Regal Cinemas South Beach,
Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, Colony Theatre,
Miami Beach
Cinematheque and
in Fort Lauderdale at The Gateway Cinema, the Sunshine Cathedral MCC, and the
Parker Playhouse. The Official Host hotel for this year’s Festival is the
Catalina Hotel on South Beach, which will become the hotspot location for
filmmakers and delegates from around the world, featuring a full scale delegate
center as well as hosting several exciting panels and evening events. The
announcement was made today by Festival Director, Carol Coombes with
Development and Operations Director Keith Cromley. The 10-day festival
will kick-off on Friday, April 25 with the Opening Night Gala
presentation of the East Coast Premiere of the hilarious comedy "Breakfast
With Scot" at the Gusman Center for Performing Arts in downtown Miami. The
film tells the story of a very ‘straight’ gay couple, an ex-NHL hockey
player-turned-sportscaster and a lawyer, who end up with temporary custody of
recently orphaned Scot, an 11-year-old boy who loves glitter, tinsel and
sparkle. The Gala Opening Night party will be held at
Jungle Island.
Director Laurie Lynd and Producer Paul Brown will attend the
screening and Q&A. The Centerpiece Screening Gala will be the Florida Premiere
of “The Secrets” on Wednesday, April 30 starring the iconic
actress Fanny Ardant. The story of two brilliant young women Naomi and
Michelle who discover their own voices in a repressive orthodox culture where
females are forbidden to sing let alone speak out. The screening takes place at
the Colony Theater followed by a themed party poolside at the
Catalina Hotel.
The Closing Night Gala will be “Were The
World Mine” at the
Gusman Center for
Performing Arts on Sunday, May 4. As the gay outcast at an
all-boys prep school, Timothy is of course prone to daydreaming about the
handsome jock. But his are no ordinary flights of fancy; they’re musical
theater extravaganzas, complete with show-stopping songs, dazzling sets, and
pirouetting rugby player chorus boys. So when the drama teacher invites Timothy
to audition for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, we know that theater is his
destiny. But the rabidly anti-gay coach wants to shut down the production: some
of the school’s finest athletes have been cast in female roles, and what could
be more hetero-threatening than that?! Director Thomas Gustafson will be
in attendance with stars of the film. This year’s Festival will also pay tribute
to prolific filmmaker
Christine Vachon prior to the screening of the Florida
Premiere of Tom Kalin's Savage Grace.
The compelling true story stars Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne,
based on the horrific Barbara Daly Baekeland murder in
London, 1972.
Baekland, a wealthy socialite, was murdered by her gay only son, Anthony, after
seducing him into an incestuous relationship in an attempt to "cure" him of his
homosexuality. Producer Christine Vachon is
often credited with producing challenging,
independent films
that are nonetheless
commercially
successful. Vachon came to prominence as the producer of a number of films with
a
Queer theme in the
early
1990s, and has been
called the "godmother"
of
New Queer Cinema.
Opening Night Gala
presentation on Thursday, May
1
in Fort Lauderdale is the acclaimed documentary “Ask Not.”
Director
Johnny Symons’ follow up to his successful film “Daddy and Papa”
(about the trials and successes of gay fatherhood), now uncovers the military`s
stance on gays in the service. The film
exposes the tangled political
battles that led to the discriminatory law while examining the societal shifts
that have occurred since its passage in 1993. Current and veteran gay soldiers
reveal how “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” affects them during their tours of duty, as
they struggle to maintain a double life, uncertain of whom they can trust. A
Gala party will take place after the screening. Director Johnny Symons
will attend the screening and Q&A. “Call Me Troy” closes out the four day
Fort Lauderdale festival marking our first time screening a film inside a
Cathedral Church. This is an inspirational story about a remarkable and dynamic
man whose social activism has played a significant role in creating change in
the GLBT community. Rev. Troy Perry is perhaps best known as the founder
of the Metropolitan Community Church - the first church to recognize the
spiritual needs of the gay community - but his "firsts" don't stop there. He was
the first openly gay person to serve on the Los Angeles County Commission on
Human Relations. In 1969, Perry performed the first public same-sex wedding in
the U.S., and in 1970 he filed the first-ever lawsuit seeking legal recognition
for same-gender marriages. The validity of his personal relationship is
currently pending judgment by the California Supreme Court. The Rev. Perry and
Director Scott Bloom will attend the screening and Q&A.
Complete
festival schedule will be announced March 24. Public tickets call
MGLFF at 305-531-2117 or online at
www.mglff.com
after April 2. |

Last Week Wrapped Up |
|
 |
|
On
Saturday March 1st was the 3rd Anniversary
(boy time flies) party of New Moon Bar in Wilton Manors. All the girls
and their boy friends came out to wish Carol Moran the best wishes. As
usual the crowds spilled over into the streets. Congrats Carol from all of us
here at Marks List, and here’s wishing you many more years to come!!
On Thursday March 6th
was the annual Miss Calle Ocho Pageant this year held at Discotekka
in downtown Miami. Last years winner, Chantel, looked beautiful all
night long. Congrats to the new Miss Calle Ocho Cynthia Dietrich.
On Saturday March 8th
I went to BOOM for their Underwear Party (yes they even had a
clothes ckeck) and to hear the Music of DJ Maximmus 3000. As usual the
club was wall to wall men, and Maximmus kept the dance floor busy!! It was a
pleasure to run into Craig (co-Owner of Boom and Gaymart) and as always
he had a big smile on his face.
After I left BOOM I headed
to Steel for Gary Santis’ Flash Saturdays and to hear the music of
Tracy Young, as well as to see the premier of the Gayety in the
front room. Well they did not disappoint as Tracy was on fire and the boys in
the Gayety room were HOT, HOT, HOT!! In addition the Video stars featured that
night, Jake Dekkard and Rod Stephens, put on a fabulous show,
tongues were wagging.
