Jeanne Dawson’s “IN LIVING COLOR” |
|
 |
|
Art Expressions Gallery
at 1212 NE 4th Ave presents Jeanne Dawson’s “IN LIVING COLOR” from March
10 – March 31 with the Artist Gala Reception on Saturday, March 10,
from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
Dawson’s
career in art began as a fiber artist. She created sculptural two and three
dimensional pieces, using materials she dyed herself. She received numerous
awards for her fiber art throughout the eight years she worked in the medium.
Like so many others, Dawson left one arena and entered another. Incorporating
her years of experience as fiber artist, she aspire to translate that insight
into paintings using texture, color and layering techniques. Each of these
became strong elements in her painting. For the past ten years,
Dawson
has worked in acrylic and is excited with the opportunities it lends. Whether
conveying the sensuous silhouette of an old stone church tower against the moon
bright night sky, patterns of pillows sprawled across a couch, or a teapot
glowing in the light of a suggested window,
Dawson
strives to capture the energy within. Her life has always been about unveiling
the soul of simple themes and the interplay of elements that define her
immediate surroundings, travels and everyday encounters. She is drawn to the
people, the simple objects and the juxtaposition of elements that usually go
unseen. Dawson’s work is in many private collections, garners the
occasional award and has exhibited in numerous shows throughout
South Florida where she
maintains a winter studio. In Florida, she is currently represented by Art
Expressions Gallery. |

Gay Families Conference to honor
activist Judy Shepard and actor Peter Paige |
|
The
fourth annual Valuing Our Families Conference, presented by Broward-based
social services agency SunServe, has announced this year’s national award
winners who will be honored at the close of the conference on March 24 at
6:30 pm at Sunshine Cathedral,
1480 SW
9th
Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard,
the young gay man brutally beaten and hung on a fence to die in sub-zero weather
in Wyoming
in 1998 is being honored for her advocacy as executive director of the Matthew
Shepard Foundation. Peter Paige, who played Emmett on Showtime’s
Queer as Folk is being recognized for his film, “Say Uncle,”
which counters negative stereotypes of gay men as caretakers for children.
Sharon Gless, spokesperson for Broward-based SunServe, the conference
presenting co-sponsor, will present both awards. The conference sponsors will
also give awards to state and local advocates who have helped promote the value
of LGBT families in
South Florida,
and across the state. The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus will
entertain the guests during the program. “Valuing Our Families is pleased to
be able to bring such influential cultural and political leaders to our annual
conference that celebrates all families,” said
SunServe
executive director Mark Adler. “Their presence is particularly
important in a year when our community has a chance to persuade
Florida
legislators to overturn the ban on adoption by gay men and lesbians.” Previous national award winners have included
Massachusetts House of Representatives member Barney Frank, award winning
novelist Armistead Maupin, gay activist and television personality
Rosie O’Donnell, and actress Sharon Gless. The event is free and open
to the public. Conference attendees will have reserved seats. A private
reception for the award winners is also planned. The all-day Valuing Our
Families Conference features advocacy training for gay and lesbian adults, youth
and their straight allies. Activities for young children in gay and lesbian
headed households and an intergenerational general session keynoted by
Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of Washington DC’s Family Pride
Coalition round out the offerings. For more information and registration for
the Valuing Our Families Conference, go to

Young Gay Leaders on a Mission to
Christian Colleges |
 |
On March 8, fifty young
adults will board 2 buses for the trip of a lifetime. The 8-week Soulforce
Equality Ride will bring them to 32 Christian colleges with policies that
silence or exclude lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students.
Their mission: to open a dialogue about the painful consequences of
discrimination and the religion-based prejudice that sustains it. “We come in
pursuit of greater understanding,” says Haven Herrin, Co-director of
Soulforce Q, a youth-led movement within the national LGBT social justice group
Soulforce. “Our goal is to foster a conversation about LGBT people and
faith. While such conversations are often marked by politics and divisiveness,
we bring open minds and hearts to academic
settings, where we hope for a
genuine exchange of ideas.” More than 200 U.S. colleges and universities
have explicit policies that discriminate against LGBT students. In 2006, the
inaugural Equality Ride traveled to 19 of those schools and held vigils,
Bible studies, class discussions, and community forums. This year the Ride’s
reach has nearly doubled. Equality Riders will bring their mix of education and
advocacy to 2 separate routes that stop at 32 schools, including the
University of Notre Dame,
Pepperdine University, and Baylor University.
Herrin sees the diversity of this year’s cohort
as another indicator of the
project’s growth. “We come from a variety of experiences, a variety of
racial and ethnic backgrounds. There are 5 straight allies on this year’s
ride. There are 4 riders who identify as transgender. There are Buddhists,
Jews, Catholics, and evangelical Christians. We’re all here to have a
conversation with
America’s next conservative
religious generation about our personal lives and our personal relationships to
the scriptures that the schools use to condemn us.” Eight of the 2007 riders are current or former
students from schools on the 2006 ride, including Vince Cervantes and
Vince Panucci, a young couple who experienced Equality Ride 2006 as students
at Azusa Pacific University. This evangelical Christian school welcomed
the riders and hosted a public forum; more than 1,200
Azusa students listened,
cried, and prayed for healing as Equality Riders shared their experiences of
anti-gay violence. Inspired by that event, Cervantes and Panucci have come out
to the campus and become activists in their communities. Says Cervantes, “I’ve
had first-hand experience stepping up in a ‘faith-based’ community to
authentically and vulnerably share all parts of my life. I aspire to open eyes,
broaden views, and get people talking by sharing my story at the institutions we
will visit on the Equality Ride.” For more information visit

The
New York Times
called “The
hottest ticket in town,”
returns to the
Amaturo Theater
at the
Broward Center
when
The
Kinsey Sicks
combine award-winning acappella harmonies with fantastic

The production is an Off Broadway In Broward
Presentation. The Kinsey Sicks began in 1993 as a group
of friends who went to a
Bette Midler
concert in San Francisco, dressed as the
Andrews Sisters
and were approached to perform as a group. The members
gave up their real-life jobs as lawyers, marketing
executives and even as a Presidential advisor to don
drag and deliver songs in a "beauty
shop quartet"
of rich four-part harmonies.
Never one to pass up a pun, the group takes its name from number six on
1940s researcher
Alfred Kinsey’s scale of sexual behavior, the ranking which denoted exclusive
homosexual behavior. Lampooning gay culture and pop
culture alike, The Kinsey Sicks have created a comic
bridge from alternative lifestyle to mainstream with

Naturist Gay Cruise |
|
For
the ever-growing numbers of baby boomers who are gay,
the appeal to travel more while wearing less has
resulted in the melding of the two into a strong,
growing niche market. For some, naturism is a
lifestyle, while others see it as an opportunity to
experience the exhilarating sense of freedom that
accompanies shedding the everyday constraints of
clothing. On the heels of this growing trend, Source
Events, the Miami Beach-based travel company
specializing in adventurous travel for the gay community
and their friends, has announced plans for a luxury
cruise to Italy and Greece aboard the five-star sailing
ship Wind Star. Italy to Greece: An Epic
Voyage takes place from May 12 to
May
19, 2007.
Sponsored by Gay Naturists International, the
cruise
is clothing-optional. Clothing optional cruises for gay
men has been one of the fastest growing niche markets in
the gay community. While Europeans have long enjoyed
clothing optional vacations, gay men in the
U.S.
now desire the same freedom of choice. According to the
American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR),
the oldest and largest organization of its kind, the
earliest documented form of nude recreation is found in
the first Greek Olympics. Therefore, it is wholly
appropriate that Source Events has chosen Greece as a
destination for its first-ever gay naturist luxury
cruise. For several years, all of Source Events’
clothing optional cruises have sold out well in advance,
and the cruise from Italy to Greece aboard the Wind Star
has been one of their fastest selling cruises to date.
In fact, only a few cabins are available for this
eight-day adventure. “Our travel ventures are about
experiencing the world in a new light; opening our
hearts and following our dreams – wherever they may lead
us,” says Craig Smith, the company’s
founder. “Extraordinary things happen when we open
ourselves to adventure. At Source Events, we think of
ourselves as an ‘experience’ company, in that we not
only offer travel alternatives, but also create events
and lasting memories.” Stepping outside the
familiar is part of the allure of naturist or
clothing-optional travelers, and nude travel has grown
into a $400 million+ global industry, a fact that
merited a front-page story in the Wall Street Journal
in 2003. The AANR also recently reported that nude
recreation and tourism has more than doubled in size in
the past ten years, as evidenced by the increasing
numbers of clothing-optional luxury resorts, condos,
airline flights and more. For the discriminating gay
traveler, luxury also has its appeal. Italy to
Greece: An Epic Voyage is designed to cater to those
who wish to not only experience the world of adventurous
travel, but who also want to do it “in style.” And the
Wind Star is the epitome of the luxury and pampering a
sophisticated traveler would demand. Each ocean-view
stateroom on the 148-passenger Wind Star is appointed
with fine bed linens and plush robes, as well as the
most advance high-tech electronics, such as iPods™ and

focal point of the Source Events’ Italy to Greece
adventure is the itinerary itself. The journey begins in
Rome, sailing down
Italy’s spectacular Amalfi Coast to Sorrento to visit
the ruins of Pompeii and the legendary beauty of
Sicily. Passengers may disembark to visit the fabled
amphitheater in Taormina
or
view Mt. Etna, the largest volcano in Europe. The
voyage continues on to the spectacular Greek islands of
Kythira, legendary birthplace of Aphrodite,
to the beautiful villages of Santorini and
on to
Mykonos,
the “Gay Mecca” of Greece. The journey
culminates in the capital city of
Athens,
home to the famed Parthenon on the Acropolis
and the
Temple of Poseidon.
In catering to the needs and desires of its guests,
Source Events provides a plethora of activities, events
and excursions to appeal to their spirit of adventure
and enjoyment. Customized excursions, entertainment,
theme parties and complimentary kayaking, waterskiing or
sailboat skiffs are just a few of the amenities guests
may enjoy. While guests may choose to go ‘au naturel’
throughout most of the journey, they must be fully
clothed in the dining room and on land-based portions of
the trip, with the exception of designated nude beaches.
For several years, Source Events has been the exclusive
producer of gay cruises aboard the famed Windjammer tall
sailing ships, catering to those who enjoy a more
hands-on sailing adventure. In addition to the ongoing
Windjammer sailing cruises, upcoming adventures include
travel to the jungles of
Costa
Rica,
islands in the
Caribbean
and
the mysteries of
Machu
Picchu.
