Last Week Wrapped Up |
|
February
6th
marked the sixth anniversary of
Edison Farrow’s
signature weekly event, Martini Tuesdays. As most
of you know the event is a roving cocktail party that
meets in a different location each week. From venues
like the
Delano
and Townhouse hotels to great restaurants like
Cafeteria, O Asian Grill and Skybar, this
weekly event is a great place to network and meet people
in a relaxed, social environment. Congrats to Edison
Farrow on six years and the best Martini Tuesday ever!
Saturday
night a gallery opening was held for Heaven on Earth
presented by bubbaclicks.net at The Gallery of
the Unknown Artists in downtown Hollywood. Local
photographer Bubba this time turned his camera to
angels and what a spectacular show! Most of the
photographs were of stone angels, the kind you find on
religious ornamentation. Also included in this showing
were provocative pieces including men with wings,
leather boots and chains. Literally hundreds of art
enthusiast showed up for this opening and I doubt anyone
walked away disappointed.
Also
Saturday night Coliseum presented their 7th
annual I Feel Love Ball. This year’s event was
nothing short of spectacular with performances by
T.P. Lords and Erika Norell, both of which
needed to be seen to be believed! Dancing on the boxes
were Coliseum’s squad of bisexual muscle gods, also know
as go-go boys! DJ Tracy Young pumped up the music
for an enthusiastic crowd that worked it on the dance
floor. Once again, hats off to Gary Santis and
the entire Coliseum crew for a spectacular Valentines
event.
Sunday’s
final T at the Jackhammer location on Andrews
Avenue was jam-packed as usual! DJ Marc Scott
kept the crowd on the dance floor as he spun the final
night before next Sunday’s move to Steel Nightclub
on Powerline Road. It seemed like everyone in town
stopped by to say goodbye to what has become the
favorite last hurrah of the weekend. Look for all of
your old friends and maybe a few new ones as Jackhammer
reopens next Sunday for a Presidents Day T that
will surely be tremendous. |

that would be something for everyone — including those
outside of the LGBT community. What tears down barriers
better than laughter?” The event also will feature
an art exhibit
showcasing the works of local artists
Lazaro Amaral, Monica Hernandez and Alekxey
Sabido. Proceeds from art sales will be donated to
Winter Party Festival.
Tickets for the event are $41.50 and $61.50. VIP

has performed to sold-out audiences at theaters across
the country. ANT hosts VH1’s

LOGO series,
U.S.

he is also the only comedian to appear on all three
seasons of NBC’s reality series Last Comic
Standing. His hit stand-up DVD, ANT:
America’s Ready, and comedy CD, Follow My
Ass!, are available in stores and online.
Michele Balan has performed on Comedy Central and in
many of the nation’s top comedy clubs, theaters and
festivals, as well as on cruises. She was voted one of
the "Top 10 Comics" by Backstage Magazine
in 2004. She outlasted all of the other female

Fort
Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, South Florida Choral Arts, Inc., is Seeks Board
Members |
|
The parent
organization of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, South Florida Choral
Arts, Inc., is seeking members to serve on its board. “Like the chorus
itself, the board is dedicated to encouraging and embodying diversity,” said
Board Chief Executive Officer Robert Garrett. “So we encourage anyone
— male or female, gay, bisexual or straight — who supports the mission and goals
of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus to step forward and express an interest
in serving.” The first gay performing-arts organization in the state of
Florida, the FTLGMC exists with a mission to build community through quality
musical performances that promote a world that accepts and values diversity. It
presents a four-concert main season, along with dozens of community performances
throughout the year. The recently reorganized South Florida Choral Arts Board is
now meeting monthly to develop fund-raising programs for the chorus. “As
anyone in the performing arts knows, ticket sales alone cannot keep pace with
the costs of presenting quality entertainment,” Garrett said. “Only
through the active participation of dedicated board members to help us seek
other funding sources can the chorus continue to grow and thrive for the benefit
of the entire community.” Garrett cited the chorus’ fall concert with Tony
Award-winner Barbara Cook as an example of the chorus’ continued growth
and funding needs. The talented performer will join the chorus in concert
October 22 on the main stage (Au Rene Theater) of the Broward Center for the
Performing Arts in
Fort Lauderdale.
A major fund-raising event is planned in conjunction with the gala event. SFCA
Board meetings will be held quarterly once programs are put into place. For more
information, contact Garrett at (954) 763-1862. Rehearsing on Wednesday evenings
at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Ave., the chorus welcomes new
singing members, as well as those who support the chorus behind the scenes on
its crew, board or as donors. For more information on the FTLGMC and its 21st
season, see
www.ftlgmc.org or call (954) 832-0060. This organization is funded in part
by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the
Broward Cultural Division.
The chorus’ 21st season is also sponsored by Norwegian Cruise Line
(NCL) and Pride South Florida. |

Territories of the Breast |
|
Territories of the Breast, a
documentary on minority women experience with breast
cancer will be presented at Cinema Paradiso, 506
SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday afternoon,
March 18, at 12:30 PM. Following the presentation,
there will be a no holds barred audience Q&A with
Director Jean-Rene Rinvil, Co-Director & Cancer
Survivor Sonia Baez-Hernandez, Composer, Diego
Parez, Cancer Survivors Catherine Connor and
Tina Nava, and their support systems. In 2006, the
Florida-produced film was nominated as Best
Documentary at the 5th Annual Urban Mediamakers Film
Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, and is this year a
selection for the 5th Spaghetti Junction Urban Film
Festival in the same city, in April. The feature
documentary intimately explores multiple crossroads of
breast cancer: health inequality, gender crisis, support
system, and medical knowledge, as experienced by artist,
performer and co-director Sonia Baez-Hernandez. A
survivor of the dread disease, she was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2001 at an outpatient facility in
Evanston, Illinois. While at that facility, she twice
canceled her surgery because her rights to know
treatment options and to participate in decisions about
her care were violated. She struggled to get access to
respectful and nondiscriminatory medical care within
this facility. Through a series of networks, she applied
to philanthropic organizations and finally had access to
surgery, reconstruction, and treatment at
Northwestern Medical Center. The film documents
unequal choices in medical care and how 46 million
Americans without health insurance could potentially
experience a violation of their patient rights. It also
reveals an intimate portrait of Sonia's struggles and
artistic response. Because of her experience, she was
intrigued by other women's similar problems in
dealing with breast cancer and inequality issues in
healthcare. Sonia interviews Latina and African American
cancer survivors, including Diana Solis, Tina Nava,
Lucille Afua Gram and Catherine Roach Connor, to
reveal their personal experiences with breast
cancer. The viewer joins Sonia's journey to see at
first hand all the experiences interwoven, disclosing
the complexities of medical access, choices, gender
crisis, and the meaning of becoming women.
TICKETS: $8 general admission, $7
seniors and students, $5 FLIFF Members. A percentage of
the ticket sales will benefit Project Help, an
organization located in Fort Lauderdale, who's mission
is to help women with cancer. |
