Fort Lauderdale
Undergoes Major Nightlife Changes |
|
The
next ten days will bring about major changes on South
Florida’s nightclub scene. What has for the last few
years been a relatively unchanging nightclub scene is
about to be turned upside down. On February 14th
Country-Western bar Scandals closes and on the 15th
reopens at what will then be the former Elements
nightclub. On Sunday February 11th the
Jackhammer location on Andrews holds its final
T-Dance and then a week later reopens at the newly
combined Steel/Jackhammer.
So
what happens to all of the very successful ongoing
events that have taken place at these two clubs for the
past three years? Well, they all have new homes.
Noche Latina Fridays, after three years at Elements,
will also move to Steel/Jackhammer. Ultra Saturdays
will move to China White and will now be called,
Snatch. The former Trannie Shack, a
Tuesday night event, will change name to Trannie
Palace and move to Steel/Jackhammer.
At
first glance it looks like Steel comes out as the major
winner with all of this change. In reality, the entire
Fort Lauderdale nightclub scene gets a boost. China
White now becomes an all LGBT club with three major
weekly events, Hump, Fagtabulous Fridays and the new
Snatch. WilMa gets a large centrally located Country bar
that fills a long absent void and Steel goes from one
major night to four.
What
is the reaction to all of this change from promoters
that are moving to new clubs? “It keeps things fresh”
says Misty Eyez, promoter of Trannie Palace. That
comment is echoed by other promoters as well, including
Scott Holland (writer of this column) who adds, “Noche
Latina Fridays has moved several times and with each
move become bigger and stronger. Steel/Jackhammer is
sure to be our best venue yet.”
In
less than ten days the
Fort Lauderdale
nightclub scene will have a fresh new look and not a
moment too soon, Spring Break is just around the corner.
Look for a wild season with improved lineups in major
venues! |

Behind the Mask of the Mattachine |
|
On Sunday, March 4th at
1:00PM the Stonewall Library & Archives in association
with Arts United’s Arts Explosion and the
Broward County Library presents Dr. James T.
Sears, author of Behind the Mask of the
Mattachine at the reading room of the Stonewall
Library,
1717 North Andrews Ave,
Ft. Lauderdale. Dr. Sears, a professor at Penn State
University, lectures throughout the world on issues
related to education, sexuality, and LGBT issues. The
Mattachini, of medieval Italy, were fools or court
jesters, who stood up in the midst of political
oppression and persecution and dared to speak the truth
in the interests of the common folk. In post-WWII
America, the Mattachine Foundation was formed in
Los Angeles
in 1950, becoming the Mattachine Society in 1953. At its
height, seven years later, it had 300 paid members with
chapters in a half-dozen U.S. cities and a variety of
publications, including the Mattachine Review. James T.
Sears, a leading historian of GLBT issues, richly
examines the rather messy history of the organized gay
movement. In Behind the Mask of the Mattachine, Dr.
Sears weaves in and out of the biography of Hal Call
and his personal struggle with those of other pioneers
and their political struggles to organize homosexuals.
After reading Behind the Mask of the Mattachine one can
only come away with a better understanding of what
really happened in the gay movement in its formative
years. The event is free and open to the public. For
further information please visit www.jtsears.com or
contact the library at 954-763-8565. |
