Friday
night was the second in a series of monthly Art Walks
that have begun in Wilton Manors. Organized by
Mary Ellen Charapko, the events have quickly caught
on and become a favorite way to meet and mingle on
WilMa's LGBT Main Street,
Wilton Drive. This month over 20 businesses featured
local artists, wine and Hors d'Ouvres. The crowds in
some areas on the sidewalk were so thick that you had to
pass on the street! We hope to see you next month on the
3rd Friday for what is sure to be an even bigger Art
Walk.
In
what makes her the first artist in the history of
Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play to produce a string of
nine consecutive #1 singles. Kristine W's release
"The Wonder Of It All," broke the record
previously held by Madonna (7) and Janet
Jackson (7) and last Saturday night she kicked off
her 2007 world tour live in concert at Coliseum.
Spinning at the club was South Florida's own Circuit
superstar DJ Lydia Prim. Kristine W's next CD is
currently in production and will be released with
tracks featuring a star studded cast of musicians
including Myron Dove from Santana, Ricky Z
from Paulina Rubio and arranger pianist Edward
Roth. Congratulations to Gary Santis and
Coliseum on another well done mega event.
This year's Stars of the Rainbow Gala (the GLCC’s major
fundraising event of the year) took place last Sunday
night. The special VIP event and awards ceremony took
place at the Hyatt Regency Pier Top. On hand was
GLCCSF director Paul Hyman handing out
awards to a variety of local business and community
leaders who support Gay and Lesbian causes. After the
awards ceremony the event moved onto the Grand
Floridian Yacht spectacularly anchored with the
17th Street Causeway Bridge above. The Grand Floridian
is an immaculately kept Yacht and on each of the ships
four floors were live entertainment, bars and loads of
food catered by the Chef's table. A fantastic
time was had by everyone that attended and we would like
to give a special thanks to all of the award winners who
have given so much to the community that we all live in.

Puccini for Beginners |
Puccini for Beginners
Directed by Maria Maggenti has its Florida
Premiere on Tuesday, February 13th at
7:30 PM
at
the Colony Theatre.
Seven
years in the making, and from the director of The
Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love
(1995), Maria Maggentis screwball comedy Puccini for
Beginners utilizes gender identity and sexual
politics as the bedrock of its storytelling. Split into
three acts, like the operas our central character
Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser,
The
Family Stone ) loves, Maggenti weaves a
delightful love story about the search for love, and its
complications. Allegra a smart up and coming
author, and
we should add commitment phobic lesbian, living in New
York, has just been dumped by her partner Samantha. Her
heart is taken against her will when she meets Philip (Justin
Kirk, Angels in
America
), a
handsome philosophy professor who is recently single
from a long-term relationship with Grace (Gretchen
Mol, The Notorious Bettie Page ).
Grace, who is sexy, gorgeous and yes, straight, is taken
by surprise when she falls in love with a woman for the
first time. While
a hipster chorus of New York lesbians and longtime friends are consistently criticizing Allegra's
defection to the "other side" Allegra, though admittedly
sleep deprived, is covertly dating two people of
different genders at the same time. It's inevitably all
going to explode forcing our author to finally declare
her true feelings for the person she loves, but it would
spoil the plotline if I revealed who Allegra truly
loves. The
after-party for women is at
Cafeteria,
546
Lincoln Road from 9:00pm till late. For tickets call
305-531-2117. |

Survivor Star J.P. Calderon Comes Out To Instinct Magazine |
|
J.P. Calderon, star of Survivor: Cook Islands, comes out to
Instinct Magazine in an exclusive interview that lands
him the cover of the publication’s February swimsuit
issue. Instinct Editor In Chief Mike Wood
conducted J.P.’s heartfelt coming out interview as
The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency crew followed
the two of them around the set of the cover shoot. The
first half of the two-part episode airs on Oxygen this
Wednesday, January 24, at
10
p.m. “It’s not every day somebody gets slapped in the
face with a major magazine like Instinct, Janice
Dickinson, her TV show,” says Calderon. “I think
I’m just supposed to do this!” J.P. has now signed
with Janice Dickinson’s agency. “It wasn’t until last
year when my dad died that I did Survivor, I said yes to
Janice Dickinson, to [Instinct]. I’m coming out and I’m
living.” As for his new boss, J.P. reveals to
Instinct, “We started a little bit butting heads, but
I love Janice Dickinson. I want everyone to know, she is
the coolest person in the world.” Instinct also
interviews notorious night owl Tara Reid in the
February issue. “All my best friends in the world are
gay!” Tara exclaims. “They’re my favorite people
in the nation. They dress me nice.” Calling from an
alleyway in
Amsterdam
on her cell phone, Reid shared her thoughts on filming
her latest film, Incubus, in Romania: “It’s a
beaten-up country. You feel like, if you could take
helicopters and, like, throw shampoo over the whole
country and a little bit of rain – it would look
beautiful.” Other features in February’s Instinct
include the recurring “Life Of Me” series, this
time focusing on one man’s life as a little person, and
a humorous story about the choice a writer had to make
when his boyfriend grew allergic to their cat.
Additionally, interviews with Reno 911’s Niecy Nash,
Sean Maguire of CBS’s The Class and Mr. Gay
International 2006, Nathan Shaked, appear in the
issue. |
