Jesse and Amy on a great first week!
Also

Singer-songwriter, activist, diplomat, Gilberto Gil |
Singer-songwriter,
activist, diplomat, Gilberto Gil represents the
best of Brazilian culture. Now he returns to the stage
as a performer, after serving as Brazil’s Minister of
Culture since 2003, with a rare solo concert at
Carnival Center in downtown Miami on Friday,
March 30, at
8 p.m. Since co-founding the explosive Tropicalia movement of the
late 1960s, Gil has remained at the forefront of
Brazilian popular culture. For nearly 40 years, Gil has
invented, innovated and reprocessed groundbreaking
music. From the young bossa-nova musician, to the
musical groundbreaker of the electric 1960s, to the
artist who made a perfect marriage between
Brazil and Jamaican reggae, to the pop star who embraced
rock music and electronica, Gil’s music has encompassed
everything from baião and samba to MPB, rock, reggae,
afoxé, and axé. His strength lies in his inclusive,
all-encompassing nature. Gil has long used his position
as a musician to speak out about social, cultural and
environmental issues. Nevertheless, it was a surprise to
many when he was appointed by the Lula government
to be Minister of Culture. As a young musician, he and
his musical partner Caetano Veloso were even
famously sent into exile in
London
by the Brazilian military government in 1970. Yet Gil
still hasn’t cut his dreadlocks, and he still appears
during Carnival on his Trio Eletrico, Expresso 2222. Gil
the artist has in no way diminished the prestige of Gil
the minister, and visa versa! Now returning to the
world’s stages, he is presenting the new
Luminoso
tour, a solo project featuring Gill and his guitar.
Since his last performance in Miami as a musician in
2000, he has been awarded countless accolades, including
Unesco Artist for Peace, last month’s Polar Music
Prize from King Gustav of Sweden, which is
informally known as the Nobel Prize of music; the
Premio Extremadura a la Criación 2005, in Spain,
for Best Latin American Artist, the Latin
Grammy Man of the Year in 2003, and several Grammy®
awards for his recordings. Tickets to Gilberto Gil at
Carnival Center are $15 - $75, available through the box
office: (305) 949-6722 or
www.carnivalcenter.org.
For group tickets (20 or more), contact (786) 468-2326.
The concert is co-presented by the Rhythm Foundation
and
Carnival
Center. |

GLSEN
South Florida
(Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network of South
Florida) announced it was awarded a $10,000 grant by
Gamma Mu Foundation to support GLSEN South Florida's
continuing operations training educators and empowering
youth in
South Florida school districts. "We admire and
appreciate the work that GLSEN South Florida has done
helping make [South Florida] schools safer for gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth," said
Martin Culbreth (left in photo) past president of the
Gamma Mu board as he presented the check to GLSEN South
Florida executive director, Robert Loupo. "We know
our money is being used for a good cause and we're happy
to support this organization." "The Gamma Mu Foundation

said Loupo. "Many of its members can recall
their own days being bullied in schools because of their
sexual orientation. They want to see it stop as much as
we do." The grant has double value for the
organization because GLSEN South Florida board
president, Bruce Presley, has donated a $100,000
matching grant to help the group expand its work in
South Florida. The Gamma Mu Foundation (www.gammamufoundation.org)
was established in 1989 by the Gamma Mu Fraternity to
support the unmet needs of the gay community on a
nationwide and continuing basis. The Foundation

Black
History Month |
In
observance of
Black History Month,
The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival
(FLIFF) will present a film event series celebrating
Black heritage in the arts, entertainment, and in civil
rights history during the month of February. The
program will be held at the festival’s year-round art
house, conveniently located in downtown Fort Lauderdale
at 503 SE 6 Street, on the South bank of the New River,
just east of Broward County Courthouse. Parking is free
in the courthouse garage and meters. Below is the
schedule of film events. For tickets and additional
information please visit
www.FLIFF.com or
call 954-525-FILM (3456).
Monday, February 12-The Highwaymen - 6:30pm
Gainesville native Julia D'Amico's film tells the story
of the young black men who quickly painted and cheaply
sold colorful scenes of Florida in the 1960s. Because
they sold them alongside Florida roads, they have been
dubbed "The Highwaymen." The paintings originally sold
for $10 to $45, but now go for up to $10,000 on the
secondary market. D'Amico lets the painters tell their
stories in their own words.
Purvis of Overtown -
7:30pm
In a Miami ghetto, ex-con Purvis Young paints. Mountains
of paintings. Walls of paintings. He paints about social
injustice, racial inequity, and economic hardship. He
painted for no one but himself and his neighbors, until
art dealers and gallery owners from across the globe
discovered him. They wanted a piece of his raw,
authentic creations. Purvis is now an internationally
known icon of black history and culture. Does art change
us? Does fame change art? Does the price of art change
the artist? What is the price of public adoration?
Through interviews with Purvis, his neighbors, and the
art world's elite, a portrait of the artist emerges.
Purvis is not quite as simple as he seems. Stunningly
shot, this film weaves a 30 year story about an obsessed
soul who owns no property, has no driver's license, and
rarely travels outside his neighborhood. The film is as
powerful as the man and his work. (66 minutes)
African American Research Library will be distributing a
limited supply of complimentary tickets donated by
AutoNation. Prior to the screenings, there will be a
complimentary Wine and Cheese reception with the
purchase of a ticket to the films.
Tickets: $8.00 General Admission / $7.00 Seniors and
Students / Free for FLIFF and MOAFL members.
(One admission for both films).
February 15 and 21-Home
of the Brave - 7pm Viola Gregg Liuzzo
was killed in 1965 shortly after participating in the
historic Voting Rights March headed by Dr. Martin Luther
King in Montgomery Alabama. She was killed in a car on a
deserted highway while driving between
Selma and Montgomery with a black teenage boy as a
passenger. Liuzzo was shot in the head by one of four
riders in another car who were active members of the Klu
Klux Klan; that is, all except one. That person was an
agent of the FBI. The chilling story that documents one
woman’s tragic contribution to the American civil rights
movement of the 1960s, is told through the eyes of her
children and narrated by Stockard Channing.
From Emerging Cinemas, Home of the Brave, is one of many first-run
feature films, presented in the latest digital
technology and virtually simultaneously at Cinema
Paradise, with their openings in major cities around the
country. These are movies that would never play in
South Florida otherwise.
Tickets: $8 General Admission / $7 Students and Seniors / $5 FLIFF

Care
Resource
announced today that they have received a check for
$100,000 from the M.A.C. Cosmetics AIDS fund to
help their YHIP program. Y-HIP is an HIV
prevention and behavior modification program that aims
to increase HIV/AIDS awareness through education and
testing, facilitate access to care, and promote risk
reduction behaviors by providing health education and
skills building in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas.
The program utilizes a peer-based outreach intervention
model to target young men of color who have sex with men
(YMSM). To achieve this, the outreach sites where the
programs offer their services are those in which youth
congregate, as well as public schools, colleges, and
university. The Y-HIP team engages youth by involvement
in community activities that are youth oriented, as the
program staff represent the age of the youth targeted.
Staff distributes educational materials, and information
about and HIV and STDs, and invites the young men and
their sex partners to be tested. YHIP participants who
test positive will be referred for comprehensive
services. In
addition,
the project offers a series of fun and educational
workshops and behavior modification groups where
high-risk youth will: Increase their knowledge about HIV
and other related topics and/or issues; reduce their
risk behaviors, such as unprotected sex and drug use;
improve necessary preventive skills, such as assertive
communication and decision-making skills; develop a
social network of resources and information and engage
in the process of educating other youth, and therefore
becoming more aware of the importance of the topics
and/or issues discussed. The curriculum for the
workshops is based on a program design called B.A.R.T
(Becoming A Responsible Team). YHIP is a CDC supported
program. Established in 1994 by M·A·C Cosmetics, the
M·A·C AIDS Fund supports men, women and children
affected by HIV/AIDS globally. Introducing its first
VIVA GLAM lipstick that same year, M·A·C decided
that every cent of the selling price of the VIVA GLAM
lipsticks would go to the M·A·C AIDS Fund. With a total
of four VIVA GLAM lipsticks now sold worldwide, and
through the annual Kids Helping Kids Card Program, M·A·C
Cosmetics has provided over $85 million to date for the
M·A·C AIDS Fund. The M·A·C AIDS Fund is the heart and
soul of the company – with its employees giving their
time, energy and talent to help those affected by
HIV/AIDS worldwide. Dita Von Teese, wife of rock
star Marilyn Manson, is the spokesperson for the
M.A.C. AIDS Fund and visited Care Resources
Miami offices on December 8th. |
