Last
Wednesday I went out to Hump at China White to
hear the hot sounds of DJ Chaos spinning an eclectic mix
of many sounds that had the boys dancing everywhere. Hump also
features #1 club kid Mizz Cori as your hostess, Glitz
Glamour as your door whore and Jordan Bailey as your
host. Thanks to Jason Taminini for continuing to put on a
great party.
Last
Saturday was the much anticipated appearance of Jennifer
Holiday at Coliseum nightclub in
Fort Lauderdale. Jennifer was one of the original
Dream Girls
on Broadway, playing Effie White, and is the powerful
one-woman voice behind soul anthems like "Hard time for
Lovers" and "No Frills Love". She also sang
with Foreigner on the chart topping hit, "I Want to Know What
Love is." But it was when she sang the instantly
recognizable line from her Billboard dance hit "And I am
telling you that I'm not going" that the crowd reacted with
thunderous applause. Congratulations to Coliseum once again on a
spectacular event. |

With a goal of no more than 500 participants riding their bikes
with the singular mission of helping the fight against Aids/Hiv, The
Smart Ride 4 (Southernmost AIDS/HIV Ride 2007) is well on it’s
way to meeting it’s rider ship goal. The ride will take
participants along a 165 mile route starting in South
Miami heading south to a triumphant victory ride around Key West,
down Duval Street and the big finish at the AIDS Memorial on White
Street Pier. Now in its fourth year, the 2005 ride raised in excess
of $350,000. This year, the bar has been raised with a goal of
$500,000. In the
three consecutive rides that have taken place The
SMART Ride has returned more than $750,000 to the community. Unique
to The Smart Ride is the organization’s pledge to donate 100%
of every dollar raised to the six agencies located throughout
Florida. This year’s recipients include the South Beach AIDS
Project, Miami; Broward House, Fort Lauderdale; COMPASS Inc., Palm
Beach; AIDS Help, Inc.,
Key
West; Trinity Charities, Sarasota; and HUG Me Program, Central Florida. An additional feature of the ride is that each participant
gets a degree of control over the distribution of the funds they
raise to the chosen agencies. All support staff; including Director
Bob Barker, work as volunteers. By virtue of their personal
donation or through sponsorships, riders are committed to raising a
minimum of $1,200 each. For those whose passion is to make a
difference in the fight against AIDS, the ride urges you to support
it by riding or crewing during the event, the organization provides
training and support for several months leading up to the event. On
the journey from
Miami
to Key West, riders are treated to lodging, catered pit stops,
on-site massage therapists, and ample support vehicles. All of the
amenities are paid for by donation or sponsorship; none with
fundraising dollars. The right is also looking for sponsorships to
offset the costs and can use assistance with everything from
Powdered Gatorade to real dollars for things like insurance, truck
rentals and the like. This years sponsors include but are not
limited to Maroone Ford of Fort Lauderdale, Starbucks, Clif Bars,
Commcare Pharmacy, Urban League, AMR Ambulance, Lifeway Medical,
Rosie’s Bar and Grille, and The Chef’s Table.
Registration is now available. Participating riders are urged to
sign on by visiting:
http://www.thesmartride.org/
and click “Registration.” There is a one-time, non- refundable
registration fee of $75. To pledge a participant as a donor or
sponsor, visit

Chicago City Limits |
|
New York City’s
longest-running comedy revue, Chicago City Limits, will bring its
hilarious improv comedy to
Miami’s
Carnival Center for the Performing Arts from January 17-21. The
troupe creates a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience by taking suggestions from
audience members and crafting scenes - everything from mini-musicals to game
shows - on the spot. The result is an evening of sidesplitting humor which
The Washington Post describes as “uproarious and amazing!” Chicago
City Limits is presented by
Carnival
Center and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network—The Downs Group. For
these performances, the Center’s Studio Theater will be transformed into the
“Studio Lounge,” a comedy club-style setting with intimate tables. Every
performance being unique, Chicago City Limits has thrilled audiences for more
than 25 years with its distinctive style of comedy. Acclaimed as “the perfect
masters of improvisation,” by The New York Times, “these
actor-writer-comedian-psychopaths will have you rolling in the aisles,” say
Newhouse Papers. The New York Times describes this show as
“hysterical and unpredictable”. The impressive list of guest artists who have
improvised with Chicago City Limits over the years include international stars
such as Paul Reiser, Robin Williams, Brett Butler, and Bill Irwin.
Chicago City Limits has made dozens of TV appearances, including segments on “The
Today Show,” “Good Day New York,” “The Joan Rivers Show,” and
Comedy Central. The troupe has also appeared on HBO, CNN, and CNBC. The ensemble
was featured in its own TV news comedy series, “Reel News,” on the USA
network. Tickets are $15 and $40 and are available online at
www.carnivalcenter.org or (305) 949-6722.

Article by Steve

Brandon Keil,
the commercial real-estate correspondent for the New York
Post, has confirmed what we've all suspected: Avalon,
formerly the Limelight, is dead. The club, at the corner
of Sixth Avenue and 20th Street, is going to become a
"mini-mall." It’s a question of location, location, location-and
in this case, its location doomed it. This was probably
inevitable, given that the area around it has gone from
dangerous to upscale in the years since Peter Gatien
first took a deconsecrated church and turned it into the city’s
most notorious nightclub. Especially with the huge success of
the revived "Ladies’ Mile," the upscale shopping district along
Sixth Avenue from 14th to 23rd Street, this had to happen. The
Ladies’ Mile actually is the nation’s very first
department-store area. In the 1880s, stores opened along this
street to serve the well-to-do families to the east and west. If
you lived east, in Gramercy, you were Old Money; if you lived to
the west, in Chelsea, you were bohemian money. It’s all detailed
in Edith Wharton’s novels, and the distinction has held
on between the East Side and West Side through today, albeit
more uptown. To continue reading, please
