“Easy
A” is loosely inspired by the novel “The Scarlet Letter” in
which adulterers were branded with a red ‘A’ to denote their
lascivious behavior. In this modern ode on to the old classic,
“clean-cut high-schooler Olive Penderghast (Emma
Stone) agrees to pretend that she lost her
virginity to her gay friend, Brandon (Dan
Byrd). Several boys learn what she has done and beg her
to perform the same service for them, hoping to gain some of her
newfound fame. This eventually turns into a full-fledged business,
lucrative and socially beneficial for Olive, enough so to gain the
ire of her rival, Marianne (Amanda
Bynes), who doesn't like the attention she's getting.
Marianne therefore starts a string of rumors in order to bring down
Olive's reputation and force her to leave the school. Olive's life
begins to resemble that of
Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne's
“The Scarlet Letter.” Olive then decides to use
the rumors to her own advantage, affixing a red A to her clothing in
reference to the embattled heroine of the novel.”
The film also stars such big names as Penn
Badgley (“Gossip Girl”), Cam Gigandet (“Twilight”), Lisa Kudrow
(“Friends”) and Stanley Tucci (“The Devil Wears Prada”).The film’s star, Emma Stone, made her feature film debut in
the 2007 teen comedy “Superbad,” playing Jules, the love interest of
lead character Seth (Jonah Hill). In 2008, she appeared in the
comedy “The Rocker,” with Rainn Wilson. Stone played Amelia, the
bassist in a band featuring singer Teddy Geiger. Stone learned to
play bass for the role. Also that year, Stone appeared in “The House
Bunny,” starring Anna Faris, alongside Katharine McPhee, Kat
Dennings, Rumer Willis, and Colin Hanks.
