Meryl
Streep heads up the cast of what has to be the summer's greatest musical romp,
Mamma Mia, a tribute to the songs of disco era sensation ABBA. Having taken
Broadway by storm, the movie version was the next logical step.
How do you turn the hit songs of ABBA into a cohesive story? You have a
wedding where the bride doesn't know which of three possible men is her father,
you have a mother who was the lead singer in a music group in her younger years,
you set the whole thing up on a beautiful small island in Greece and you just go
with it.
Mamma
Mia was completely fun in a major way. It wasn't just the music that made the
movie, the cast was spectacular as well.
Oscar
winner
Meryl Streep
heads the cast of the
film, playing the role
of single mother Donna
Sheridan.
Pierce Brosnan,
Colin Firth
and
Stellan Skarsgård
play the three potential
fathers to Donna's
daughter Sophie (Amanda
Seyfried).
But the real show stealer was hunky newcomer Dominic Cooper in the role
of Sky. Lauded for his role in the play, The History Boys, he was later
proclaimed a Breakout Performer by Rolling Stone Magazine. Christine Baransky
also puts in a stellar performance as Tanya. The role was reminiscent of her
part in the Birdcage.

|
Mamma Mia!
is a British & American
film adaptation of the
West End
musical of the same name
based on the songs of
pop
group ABBA.
There's
a wedding where the bride doesn't know which of three possible men
is her father and a mother who was the lead singer in a music group in her
younger years.
Will the real father be revealed in time to walk the bride down
the aisle? |
The setting of the movie is a breathtaking Greek Isle and the crystal
clear waters of the Aegean Sea. So you've got the music of ABBA, a star
studded cast and for a backdrop one of the most beautiful spots on
Earth. The only thing that could go wrong would be the story line and
fortunately that worked as well. The story is as hilarious as it can be.
When three possible fathers show up to walk the bride down the aisle the
laughs just keep coming.
But the real magic is in the music. While all of the music is great, there
are three songs with a huge cast of people from the village that really get you.
At the end of the movie, the audience stayed in their seats and watched the
credits role by listening to more ABBA hits. When Waterloo started playing the
audience clapped along.
If you're looking for a fun movie and a good time for two hours, this is it.
