First
off, let me tell you Deception is a perfect title.
Congratulations to director
Marcel Langenegger for intricately
weaving such a complex and nearly perfect web. Ladies and
Gentlemen, nothing is what it seems, for there is a
significant amount of deceiving. When you sit down to see
this movie double check your seat belt, because you do not
want to fall off. Girl, seriously, if you’re not paying
attention you will have no clue who is doing what, or where
they belong. Watch closely and sit back and be prepared to
be amazed.
The
character development in Deception was truly intense. The
script is extremely well written and worked to
fruition. There is truly no room for error in this film, and
in many ways reminds me of the betrayal of 2005's
Derailed, mixed with the
shock value of 1998's
Wild Things.
This
movie is off to a slow start as we follow the life of tax
auditor Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan
McGregor) who is basically a nerd. He is
extremely shy and painfully awkward, and lacks any ounce of
aggression. Not to mention, he is solely focused on work
that does not give him much time or energy for fun or even a
social life. When he meets Wyatt Bose (Hugh
Jackman) his entire life is flipped upside down,
literally. Wyatt presents himself as a well cultured, well
educated man of the world. He introduces Jonathan to a taste
of what it would be like to have money, power, and self
confidence. He then realizes what he has been missing all
along, thus being born again. Well that and he is given the
secret key to the "Sex Game". A game that is the straight
man's answer to "anonymous sex" with many different women.
Heterosexual men need no longer be jealous of the crazy sex
gay men so frequently have at bath houses, bookstores or
parks! I don't want to give anything away and I don't want
to mislead you or give you any clues of who is the good guy
or bad, so I will just say that the deeper he gets into the
"Sex Game" the more he loses the grip on his real life and
all that he holds dear.
The
only thing that annoyed me about this film is that the first
hour played by dramatically slow. The slow portion was an
important and was used to validate the lives of the
characters once the shit hits the fan. I also found parts of
the ending a bit bothersome.
All
this being said I do recommend this film for you will not
know what's coming up next. I was both surprised and
impressed with the level of master manipulation that takes
place in Deception. As an audience member you may think
you have it figured out, only to find out that you are
proven wrong.
