Naked Boys Singing is the longest running musical in
Off-Broadway history.
Naked Boys originated in Los Angeles and then blew up
when it opened at
Actors' Playhouse in Greenwich Village.
Thirteen writers collaborated, including Bruce Vilanch,
a
two-time Emmy Award winner. Bruce is also
Bette
Midler's chief writer.
The movie follows the stage production's order of
songs and opens with "Gratuitous
Nudity" performed by the entire cast, Full Monty.
A
couple of songs into the movie and the fact that you're
seeing a bunch of naked guys singing wears off. You numb to
the nudity and start getting into the humor of the lyrics.
When that happens they start pouring it on. First you're
treated to a song entitled "I Beat My Meat" which involves
the whole cast in a double entendre that eventually ends up
with the boys clad in butchers caps dancing and singing
about tenderizing steaks before they're grilled. When one of
the naked boys is rolled across the stage, steak in hand, on
a grill, I busted out laughing. Naked Boys Singing is truly
Laugh Out Loud hysterical.
There are a couple of ballads and several numbers that will get your blood
boiling including one sung in a steam room, a couple in locker rooms and one of
my favorites, two boys looking at each other through windows across an alley or
air shaft. A voyeurs dream come true. One of the locker room scenes recalls
those days in high school where the jock is every gay boys secret fantasy. "Yes
it's a thrill to see Bobby Baker nude, but don't you know that to point is
rude?" And when Baker walks in and disrobes, the Gay boys hide their pointing
peckers so as not reveal their lust.
I needed a cold shower.
The singing voices of the actors are all top notch and while
they were also apparently chosen for their gym toned bods,
the singing and acting are what makes the movie first-rate.
The boys are a melting pot of fired up hunk testosterone.
From White meat and Latino to African American, Jewish and
Asian, there is a fantasy boy for everyone.
The movie's only point is to entertain, so don't go
looking for the deeper meaning of life.
The premise of this musical comedy is to take
stereotypical Gay male fantasies and turn them into
a
traditional musical revue in the vein of Vaudeville and
high-camp American musical theater.
There are 15 songs that fly by in a celebratory rage of
laughter and nakedness.
This is one of FLIFF's Gay films that you won't want to miss.
We give it five stars out of five. Kudos to the Naked Boys
Singing!
