Hairspray
Go See It **** (Four Stars)
Go see this film, for it is both fun
and exciting, and I would say the perfect compilation of
three generations of
Hairspray,
morphing both the original movie and the Broadway
musical, with an updated twist for the kids today.
I don't have much to say negative about this movie. I was
excited to see that it kept a heavy feel of John Waters, yet
it was subdued a bit so it was not so offensive. The only
thing that I was irritated about was
John Travolta who
played Edna Turnblad, a role made famous by legendary drag
queen
Divine, and
immortalized on stage by famous gay actor
Harvey Fierstein.
Back in 1988 when the original movie came out it was quite
scandalous for a gay man / drag queen to be playing a real
woman. In the movie she was just that, both a wife and a
mother. My frustrations with the current version is that
the did not choose an out gay and proud actor like
Harvey Fierstein, or
Nathan Lane to put
in drag or even use an already famous at large queen like
Chi Chi La Rue,
Jackie Beat, or even
me. That being said, I will say that the dull, and boring
John Travolta (Edna
Turnblad) came alive and became the exuberant, exciting star
in the final scene of the movie and redeemed herself.
despite my personal frustrations with taking the high road
or going main stream -- I will say that the over all message
of this movie is very simple, yet wonderful and will reach
all who watch it. Love yourself! No matter if you are Big,
Fat, Skinny, Black or White, you are special and wonderful.
It is funny, yet sad, to look back at a time not so long
ago. A time that is often forgotten where there was no such
thing as integration. Back when having a "Negro Day" on
your show was a big scandle. After seeing such progress in
our era, I cannot help but think about a time when every day
is "Homo Day".
On a final note I will say that this movie is cute, fun, and
will leave you feeling good about yourself -- That is if you
don't leave hungry from all the food comments.
