LOVED IT *****(Five Stars) |
|
|
This is a
heart wrenching tale about going through your emotional gay
puberty in adult life. And in Gray Maters, the journey is
spectacular. The movie is full of crazy, funny wit,
excellent cinematography and amazing yet deeply emotional
character development. Gray Matters is sure to go mainstream
for it did not appear to be an independent film in any way.
From the lighting and sets, to the amazing all star cast
(Heather
Graham,
Thomas Cavanagh,
Sissy Spacek,
Molly Shannon,
Alan Cumming, and
Bridget Moynahan),
this movie is specatcular. |
The
basic story is that
Heather Graham (Gray)
and
Thomas Cavanagh (Sam) are
brother and sister. He is the perfect guy. Smart, nice, and
attractive. She is the perfect girl. Beautiful, secure,
loving, playful, and as she says, she is a "Beautiful hotel,
Gorgeous on the outside, but closed for repairs on the
inside." This brother and sister couple are both brilliant
and over think everything. They grew up extremely close and
now are best friends and roommates and both eternally
single. That is until one day they go to a dog park and Gray
is determined to find her brother a girl to go on a date
with. They bump into Charlie (Bridget
Moynahan) a beautiful, fun, charming girl. After
Charlie and Sam's first date (which lasted till the wee
hours of the morning) Sam and Charlie get engaged. The
engagement adds a big kink into Gray and Charlie's
relationship and it only it gets worse when the night before
the wedding Gray and Charlie make out. Gray's
whole world is destroyed. She now realizes she is a lesbian
and the journey then takes a spin.
|
|
The supporting actors also
really help to make this movie a sensation.
Molly Shannon is Gray's
co worker and friend. I loved every minute Molly was on the
screen. When Molly realized Gray was a lesbian, she
hilariously asked, "What if I died my hair red? Would you be
attracted to me? I'm a great catch!" Her self confidence was
impeccable. |
|
Then we have Dr Sydney (Sissy
Spacek) with her alternative therapy sessions
like rock climbing, bowling, or in a batting cage. I think
the most shocking scene in the movie was the touching
performance from the taxi cab driver Gordy (Alan
Cumming). Alan played a convincing straight
person and was most correct when in reference to life's many
obstacles
he said to Gray,
"Easy is so boring." The comment makes so much sense and
really puts things into perspective for the newly Out Gray. |
|
This movie was touching and
full of incredible uncomfortableness. It was also very
accurate to real life and therefore truly enjoyable.

Gray Matters
Synopsis:
They finish each other's sentences, dance like Fred and
Ginger, and they're all hearing wedding bells. All? No
ménage-a-tois here –– just Gray and Sam (Heather Graham and
Tom Cavanagh), a sister and brother so compatible they wind
up falling for the same woman. But while Charlie (Bridget
Moynahan) adores her sister-in-law to be, and Sam has
finally found the perfect mate, Gray has feelings for
Charlie that are about to turn her life inside out. A
romantic comedy that sets sibling rivalry on its head, Gray
Matters gives a whole new meaning to love . . . and destiny.
