This was an incredibly well written and visually stimulating
supernatural Thriller / Action / Horror movie. I would say
that it is this generations The
Craft, now mix it up with incredible CGI much
like the ones found in movies like
The Matrix, a hint
of homo eroticism much like type found in The
Brotherhood (which every gay guy needs to
NETFLIX if you have not already seen this series of
films) and you have The
Covenant.
Congratulations to the director,
Renny Harlin, for he
was able to put all the budget into the incredible graphics
and he was able to find some incredibly hot young no-name
actors (like my future husband and love of life
Steven Strait - who
happens to play the most powerful witch of the bunch, go
figure.) Now add some dark eerie sets, throw in some
incredible fight scenes and ridiculous special effects and
you will have this truly wonderful movie. There is
definitely something for everyone, including the diverse
group of guys one blonde, one preppy brunette, one rebel
looking and the other more of a wall flower. I'm anxious
to follow the blossoming careers for these stunning young
boys. Not only were they attractive, but they were also
believable in their portrayal of their characters. There
are also some moments that involve incredible comedic timing
for example - my favorite use of power was when Reid (Toby
Hemingway) made someone puke on demand - that
was great!
The basis of
this film is that back in the 1600's five magical families
settled and formed a colony in Massachusetts called Ipswitch.
The main characters in this film - Caleb (Steven
Strait), Pogue (Taylor
Kitsch), Reid (Toby
Hemingway), and Tyler (Chace
Crawford) who are known as the son's of Ipswitch.
These boys all inherited their ancestors' supernatural
powers. We begin our journey together while they are all
attending the same New England Private Boarding School. Growing up
together they have become best friends and are as close as
brothers. The fact that they each have these growing powers
bonds them in a special way for they are each developing
their strengths and getting ready for their assent into full
having full fledged magical powers at the age of 18. This,
of course, comes with a price -- every time they use their
powers it prematurely ages them, thus shortening their
life. Yet the urge to use this power is strong like a drug,
and therefore very addictive. The fifth bloodline was
killed off in the Salem witch hunts-- or was it, hence
fourth the drama of the movie and where Chase Collins (Sebastian
Stan) comes into play. This was surely the basis
of hopefully a very long series of movies, it had a basic
back story but the end of this film was left wide open for
future chapters of the Ipswitch boys. Could this be the new
more mature Harry Potter? Here's hoping.
To be honest I was shocked that it was only rated PG-13,
especially because of the locker room nudity, however can
you imagine how hot or vicious if this movie could have been
if it went R. The gays will especially love this movie,
what more do you need for a homo erotic fantasy than five
incredibly attractive young guys running around proving who
has more power. They even have a man on man kiss. Don't
fret lesbians and or straight guys, there is also a scene
for you when the two girl roommates chat as they are getting
ready for bed while they were wearing Frederick's of
Hollywood nighties, it was cute.
I really
loved this movie and hope to one day have this one and
hopefully all the chapters that follow on DVD. The only
flaw I found (other than the fact that maybe the entire
movie was filmed in dark lighting) was the Darklings. What
were they -- why were they sent? They are talked about
several time however they are never explained. It appears
that the explanation for them was edited out of the movie,
or someone just forgot to put it in. Maybe it will be
explained in Chapter 2? However other than that this movie
was spectacular and I suggest you run out today and see it
for you will love it.
PS - It also
had a killer soundtrack!
