Go See it ****(Four Stars) |
|
|
This
movie was so fun and vibrant and exciting it is clear why
the story of this notorious queens makes such a compelling
story. One that has been told many, many times over the
years, and what better director to tell the 2006 version
than the great and artistic Sofia
Coppola who made the journey so full of color and
fashion. |
|
As we have all learned in
school Marie Antoinette (Kirsten
Dunst) was an incredibly young queen and a bit
naive to the ways of the world and is most famously quoted
in history as to say "Let them Eat Cake" however in this
version we really get to penetrate her life and realized
that yes she lives in a fabulous castle and has millions of
servants but she is essentially bored stiff and miserable in
a sexless marriage to a gay man. On that note I have to
tell you it was quite hilarious when she tried countess
times to have relations with her husband, and yet it was sad
at the same time for she didn't know what to do. Except of
course to throw party after party to entertain herself and
distract her from her misery.
|
I
was most excited to find out my new favorite supporting
actress
Molly Shannon was in
this film as aunt Victoire. She was great, and I loved the
catty banter between the girls, especially when the king's
(Marie Antoinette's husbands grandfather's) mistress was
around she desperately wanted to talk to Marie Antoinette
but she was not permitted to speak to her until she was
spoken to, and the one and only time she spoke to her first
she said something so basic and ridiculous.
|
I
liked this film but I hated the way the movie ended. It
looked as though they escaped the mob and drove into the
sunset, however those of us that read our history books know
how the story ended. I wanted to see her Be-heading in the
movie and I really wanted to see more of the common folk or
people of France.
|
|
I have to say it was hilarious
to see all the peasants and the ridiculous customs and order
of traditions that were mandatory when the queen awoke or
ate her meals. |
|
All the props, and period clothing etc were perfect, I
loved and believed everything. In fact my only problem with
the film is that they didn't really show her age much. The
movie started when she was 15 and married to Louis XVI (Jason
Schwartzman), she became queen at 19 and then was
beheaded at 38 and yet she looked the same age the entire
film. |
|
I'm suggesting that you go see
this film for it's fun and enjoyable. Its colorful and the
costumes and designs are extravagant, however I must
secretly say that is mostly full of fluff and lacked a lot
of substance. But if your looking for an enjoyable film you
will enjoy this one. |
