Chelsea
Manhattan is one of Five New
York Boroughs and is comprised
of neighborhoods that are
essentially cities within a
city. Manhattan's many
neighborhoods are not named
according to any particular
convention. Some are
geographical (the Upper East
Side), or ethnically descriptive
(Little Italy). Others are
acronyms, such as TriBeCa (for "TRIangle
BElow CAnal Street") or SoHo ("SOuth
of HOuston"), or the far more
recent vintages NoLIta ("NOrth
of Little ITaly") and NoMad ("NOrth
of MADison Square Park ").
Harlem is a name from the Dutch
colonial era after Haarlem, a
city in the Netherlands.
Alphabet City comprises Avenues
A, B, C and D, to which its name
refers.
Two neighborhoods are of
particular interest to Gay and
Lesbian people, Greenwich
Village, site of the Stonewall
Riots and Chelsea, stereotyped
for its legendary gym bunnies.
Greenwich Village is generally
known as an important landmark
on the map of bohemian culture.
The neighborhood is known for
its colorful, artistic residents
and the alternative culture they
propagate. Due in part to the
progressive attitudes of many of
its residents, the Village has
traditionally been a focal point
of new movements and ideas,
whether political, artistic, or
cultural. This tradition as an
enclave of avant-garde and
alternative culture was
established by the beginning of
the 20th century when small
presses, art galleries, and
experimental theater thrived. In
the mid 1960's Greenwich Village
became the center of Gay and
Lesbian Culture in New York,
eventually leading to police
raids on Gay bars and
specifically the
Stonewall Inn,
a bar frequented by drag queens.
The police raid at the Stonewall
Inn sparked riots that are
considered to be the beginning
of the modern LGBT human rights
movement.
New York's other gay
neighborhood, Chelsea, is a
melting pot of cultures. Above
23rd Street, by the Hudson
River, the neighborhood is
post-industrial, featuring the
newly-hip High Line that follows
the river all through Chelsea.
Eighth Avenue is a center for
LGBT-oriented shopping and
dining, and from 20th to 22nd
street between Ninth and Tenth
avenue, mid-nineteenth century
brick and brownstone townhouses
are still occupied, a few even
restored to single family use.
This year'sSandblast
party took place on the
Jersey Shore in Asbury
Park with Club Paradise.
The New York crowd was
out in full force for
this mega-event.
