About Gay and Lesbian Denver, Colorado

Denver is America’s Mile-High City. This capitol of Colorado and most populated city in the state is nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the West and flat plains to the East. Although Denver is not always thought of as having a predominant Gay and Lesbian population, the LGBT community is actually quite large and thriving. Another common misconception about Denver is that it is unbearably frigid and covered in deep snow. It is actually known as a semi-arid climate. With little to no humidity, the diverse temperatures feel less extreme. With an average of 300 sunny days a year, this city can even rival the Sunshine State. The annual precipitation is only an average of 15.8 inches (Fort Lauderdale gets 90+ annually) and the sun quickly melts any snow that falls in the winter. This is an ideal climate for those wanting to experience all four seasons.

If sports get you amped up, Denver is ready to deliver. Within the city, there are many stadiums that host professional teams such as the Denver Broncos (football), Colorado Rockies (baseball), Colorado Avalanche (ice hockey), Denver Nuggets (basketball), and many other sports teams as well. Denver is right next to the Rocky Mountains, so if the great outdoors are your passion, there are many activities within a short driving distance of this metropolitan city. There is hiking, camping, rafting, and biking in the summer. In the winter there is skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. Another way to get “outdoorsy” without leaving the city is to visit Cheesman Park. This park is a popular gathering spot for the Gay and lesbian community and offers open green space to sunbathe, jog, picnic, and even play a pick-up game of Frisbee or football. It is unofficially a dog park as well because many people even bring their furry little companions for a game of fetch. In the winter, Cheesman Park is perfect for cross country skiing.

Capitol Hill, an artistic bohemian area in the heart of Denver, is home to a happening LGBT community. It is known as the “Gay village”. Within this area, there are restaurants, bars, clubs, concert venues, and cute little shops. Even businesses that are not deemed “Gay” are still very “Gay-friendly” in this area. Capitol Hill is home to the annual Gay and Lesbian PrideFest. In fact, the pride parade travels right through this area. People from all over the state (and even the surrounding states) migrate to Denver for the two days of Pride festivities.

Denver is home to many attractions. If roller coasters and thrills are your thing, be sure to check out Elitch Gardens. This theme park is located right in the heart of the busy downtown area. For something a little milder, the Denver Aquarium and Denver Zoo offer the excitement of seeing nature’s most lovable, interesting, and fierce creatures from all over the world. Some great venues to see independent films, shows, and even feature films include the Mayan Theatre, Esquire Theatre, Chez Artiste, Olde Town, and Greenwood Village. If you’re desiring something high class, Denver offers a plethora of art galleries, museums, musicals, plays, and operas.

The Denver people are generally open-minded. Many of the people are concerned with being green to protect and preserve the Earth. Colorado is one of many select states to allow the use of medical marijuana. The lax feel in the city make it seem like the “Amsterdam of America”. With less concern about glitz and glam, the realness of the population is refreshing. Denver is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of most other cities.

Winter Park Ready to Shred

A few weeks ago we reported that "Colorado is Open". And now Winter Park is open as well. Winter Park is best known for the mountain Mary Jane, which includes moguls, tree skiing, hidden huts and some of the most difficult terrain that is close to Denver. The ski area is in fact owned by the city of Denver, although it is about 90 minutes away. More after the Jump: Winter Park Ski Resort Colorado

Denver's Rioja

The cuisine at Rioja in Denver's historic Larimer Square features a menu that is inspired by Mediterranean ingredients and influenced by local and seasonal products. The ambiance includes hand-blown glass fixtures a copper-topped bar and a fully open exhibition kitchen. The simple decor at Rioja allows the food (and the kitchen) to shine and take center stage. More after the Jump: Rioja Mediterranean Restaurant Denver

Aspen Gay Ski Week
It's time to book your Aspen Gay Ski Week hotel rooms! This year's event takes place in January in what is considered by many to be America's premier Rocky Mountain ski resort town. While the main event takes place on the slopes surrounding Aspen, it is no less important to make sure that you find a hotel that will land you in the center of all the action. The Limelight Hotel is this year's host hotel. Other hotels that are steps away from the mountain include the historic Hotel Jerome, Kimpton's Sky Hotel and the Aspen Mountain Lodge. While in Aspen, we recommend you check out these restaurants that are outside of the hotels, The Red Onion, Wild Fig and Gisella.

All said and done, Aspen is a Gay Friendly town 365 days a year, but Gay Ski Week is a great way to get acquainted with this extraordinary vacation wonderland.
