How
to lose 10 pounds and keep it off… Permanently!
by Tom Bonanti
Losing weight is a national obsession, and not just among vain,
self-absorbed queens. With over half the population overweight,
dropping five or 50 pounds is a necessary goal for many. Yet, too
few people accomplish this task successfully. Most lose a few pounds
for awhile, but eventually gain them back and then some.
Whether you want to lose weight to improve your health or simply
want to drive all the men crazy with a smaller, skimpier swimsuit,
here are some major pointers that will insure your success. Remember
to check with your physician before beginning a weight loss program.
Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner
like a pauper. Your body needs calories early in the day when you’re
busy and active, not at night when you’re ready to crash. Never go
to bed on a full stomach – it’s disastrous for your sleep and your
waistline. And by a royal breakfast, I don’t mean lard omelets and a
side of bacon. Keep it low fat. Remember to eat low glycemic index
carbs like whole grains and fruits for energy, and plenty of protein
to feed your muscles.
Try interval training. This is a
wonderful and simple blend of aerobic and anaerobic work. The way I
like to do it is to perform a couple of sets of light to moderate
squats – anaerobic strength training – then take a brisk run around
the block outside the gym – aerobic training. I follow this with
sets of push-ups and then perform several sets of walking lunges
around the parking lot. Interval training allows you to be creative
and spontaneous. It is a more efficient way to burn fat and it
should take you no more than 30 to 45 minutes.
Drink plenty
of water. Water helps you feel full, and is good for flushing out
your system. Fruit drinks, soft drinks, and coffee don’t count as
your eight glasses of water a day. Sports drinks, like soda, are
loaded with extra sugar and sweeteners you don’t need unless you’re
running a marathon. There’s no substitute for good, clean water.
Divert
yourself when you crave bad foods – like when you’re stressed,
depressed, pissed-off or all of the above. Get out of the house and
take a walk. Have sex. Get a massage. Go on Grindr. Do anything
that’ll take your mind off of junk food and needless binge eating.
Finally, reduce lifestyle barriers that make weight-loss
impossible. Thank about your lifestyle and how your behaviors and
choices help or hinder you. Do you pack a nutritious lunch and
healthy snacks to take to work instead of eating from a vending
machine? Do you say “yes” too often to a mean-ass boss who you’ll
never please anyway? Do you need to dump that unemployed,
self-entitled diva you call a boyfriend?
It’s your body and
your life. You can either, sit back and be an angry, whiney, fat
victim, or you can take a stand and make choices that’ll keep you
healthy, fit, and fabulous.
