Legendary actor Paul Newman
passed away last night at the age of 83 at his home in Westport,
Connecticut.
A former chain smoker,
Newman had been diagnosed with lung cancer in June of this
year and ultimately died of it.

Clay Aiken Interview
with Diane Sawyer on ABC's Good Morning America.
Joe. My. God.: Yesterday when
Sarah Palin visited a downtown 9/11 memorial, author
Michael Daly was there signing copies of his book about
Father Mychal Judge, the quietly gay yet celibate priest who was
killed by falling debris outside the Twin Towers. When Palin
approached Daly's table, his handlers suggested inscribing a copy
for her. In the photo at left, Daly's book is in Palin's hand.

Queerty: For years public figures have used the "friend" excuse to defend
themselves against accusations of bigotry. We've all heard it - "I'm not a
homophobe. Some of my best friends are gay." Sarah Palin definitely
played that card in 2006, when she told an Alaskan newspaper that though
she supported her state's potential ban on same-sex marriage, she's not against
the gays: "Palin said she's not out to judge anyone and has good friends who are
gay, but that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment."

Dallas Voice:
World’s funniest comedian [Wanda Sykes] wants
Dallas’ Pride parade to stop in front of George and Laura’s new
home. And she says Obama needs to get with the program on same-sex
marriage. What an incredible week: On Sunday, Dallas
celebrated 25 years of Pride; on Monday night, Lindsay
Lohan confirmed that she’s dating Samantha Ronson; and on
Tuesday afternoon, Clay Aiken announced he’s an openly gay
dad.

The
Bilerico Project: Back in March, William Bolthouse, the former owner
of Bolthouse Farms juice company, donated $100,000 to support Proposition 8
in California. The donation became public in June, at which time I also found
that William Bolthouse and his wife were running the Bolthouse Foundation, a
multi-million dollar charity that funnels money to political and religious
right-wing operations, and had made donations to Gary Bauer and George
W. Bush's campaigns. [Editors note: Bolthouse Farms salad dressings and
other products are available in local grocery stores]

Alter Net:
There were 23 debates during the Democratic primary and part of my
job on the Hillary campaign was to monitor the post-debate reaction
in the media. I watched hundreds of self-described political experts
instantly declare who won and who lost. Here's what I
learned: the pundits are full of it. They don't know any more than
you do and many of them have a vested interest in tilting the scales
one way or another. After the debate ends, if you want to know who
won, turn off the TV. You can figure it out for yourself.

Jossip: Says NBC
Universal in a just-delivered statement: "NBC Universal is
pleased that the court granted our motion for a preliminary
injunction against The Weinstein Company. The overwhelming
evidence demonstrated that The Weinstein Company violated NBC
Universal's right of first refusal to future cycles of Project
Runway. After hearing all of the evidence, the court issued an
order prohibiting The Weinstein Company from taking the show or any
spin-off to Lifetime."

OK Magazine: After five seasons, there are plenty of changes in store for
the next go-around for reality hit Project
Runway. In addition to the previously announced move from NYC to
L.A., and from Bravo to Lifetime,
OK! has learned that the show will be taking
its magazine partnership away from Elle,
who has featured all the previous Runway
winners' work in its pages, and moving to
Marie Claire.

Saturday,
September 27, Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Boulevard, Coral Gables First with
his performances on Minnesota Public Radio's Prairie Home Companion and later
in his books, Garrison
Keillor has become a symbol of the small-town Midwest -- its
absurdities, its stoutness, and its warmth. His popular, funny stories set in
Lake Wobegon manage to evoke nostalgia for a town that never existed. Clint
Bunsen is one of the old reliables in Lake Wobegon— the treasurer of the
Lutheran church and the auto mechanic who starts your car on below-zero
mornings. For six years he has run the Fourth of July parade, turning what was
once a line of pickup trucks and girls pushing baby carriages that hold their
cats into an event of dazzling spectacle. Blazing bands, marching units,
cannons, horses, a fireworks show, and the famous Living Flag—one thousand men
and women wearing red, white, or blue, standing in formation—have attracted the
attention of CNN and prompted the governor to put in an appearance as well. The
town is dizzy with anticipation. Until, that is, they hear of Clint's ambition
to run for Congress. They're embarrassed for him. They know him too well—his
unfortunate episodes involving vodka sours, his rocky marriage. And then there
is his friendship, or whatever it is, with the twenty-four-year-old girl who
dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade. It's rumored that underneath
those robes she is buck naked, and that her torch contains a quart of booze. In
Liberty
(Viking, $25.95) it's Lake Wobegon as it's always been—good loving people who
drive each other crazy. Tickets are required for this event. You will receive two (2) tickets
with your purchase of Liberty
at any Books & Books location. Presented in collaboration with Florida Center
