Gay Literature
Group at the Stonewall Library. The Stonewall Library and
Archives is happy to announce that its monthly GLBT book
discussion group will return from its summer hiatus on Thursday,
September 14, at 7:30 p.m. Jesse Monteagudo, authorof "The Book
Nook" and an award-winning authority on GLBT literature, will
lead the discussions on the second Thursday
of every month. The first book to be discussed, appropriately
enough, is "Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay
Revolution," David Carter's history of the pivotal event in GLBT
history (that incidentally gave SLA its name). In addition
to discussing "Stonewall," participants will have the
opportunity to discuss other topics of interest and to choose
October's title. Admission to the book discussion group is free
and the event is open to the public. |
|
Rent, the
musical (not the movie!)
will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets are available at the theater Box Office and at
www.ticketmaster.com
. You can also check out other shows at
www.BroadwayAcrossAmerica.com
or at
www.browardcenter.org

This is a queasy mystery-horror story
about a geek who writes murder stories. He is being
interrogated by hard-bitten detectives who think he is
not making up his stories. This play is at
GableStage in Coral Gables’s Biltmore Hotel. For
more information, call 305*445-1119. |

Metro
Pictures: Part 2
You
may be wondering if this show has to deal with the Metro
Golden Mayer Production Company…no. Metro Pictures
“refers to snapshots of the city” and that the works
“define, interpret and/or reject the city.” This show
is wide open to interpretation and includes stuff like a
set of musical vests that “only when two participants
wear them…do the sculptures emit sound.” The exhibit is
on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art until
September 17th. The Museum is located at 770
NE 125th Street in North Miami. You can
either call 305*893-6211 or visit them on the web at
www.mocanomi.org for further information.

"Viva Pedro!",
A
Tribute
to Pedro Almodóvar,
presented by Emerging Cinemas.
All about my Mother
This
second film in a series of 8 within Viva Pedro!,
a Tribute to Pedro Almodovar presented by Emerging
Cinemas. Penelope Cruz stars as a single mother in
Madrid sees her only son die on his 17th birthday as he
runs to seek an actress's autograph. She goes to
Barcelona to find the lad's father, a transvestite named
Lola who does not know he has a child. First she finds
her friend, Agrado, also a transvestite; through him she
meets Rosa, a young nun bound for El Salvador, and by
happenstance, becomes the personal assistant of Huma
Rojo, the actress her son admired. She helps Huma manage
Nina, the co-star and Huma's lover, and she becomes
Rosa's caretaker during a dicey pregnancy. With echoes
of Lorca, "All About Eve," and "Streetcar Named Desire,"
the mothers (and fathers and actors) live out grief,
love, and friendship. 2000
Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Film. Cannes
Film Festival Award Winner - Best Director.
Showing at
Stage West at The Duncan Theatre on September 14 at
