Georgia
O'Keeffe: Circling Around Abstraction
through May
6, 2007
Organized by the Norton Museum of Art, Georgia
O'Keeffe: Circling Around Abstraction is the first
exhibition to highlight this renowned American painter's
individual approach to the issue of abstraction, a
stylistic strategy which in many ways preoccupied
artists throughout the 20th century.
The exhibition brings together fifty-one of O'Keeffe's
works to illuminate the various and evolving ways she
used circular forms and motifs as the means whereby she
organized, simplified, and even energized her
compositions.
Both the exhibition and its catalogue, with every work
illustrated in color, will enhance both popular
appreciation and scholarly understanding of the artist's
significant contribution to the development of American
modernism.

Driving with Dead People
There is a book premiering this month by Monica Halloway
entitled Driving with Dead People
that tells Monica’s story of how she grew up with a
father that always had a video camcorder in the
passenger seat of his truck just in case he
happens to see an accident. Sadly, there was more
footage of accidents than of his own children growing
up. No wonder she ends up befriending Julie, the town
Mortician’s daughter. They hang out in the casket room,
talk, and become close friends—so close she ends up
becoming the company’s driver picking up bodies!. This
book looks amazing and is a definite must read. |

Cucumber Vodka
With the latest craze of liquor companies coming up with
different flavors for their products, how about a Do-It-Yourself
solution? Cucumber Vodka. This is a simple way to
make a new flavor of your current favorite brand of vodka that will mix
well later with: mint, lemon, lime (or any other citrus fruit) and will
not add sweetness—just flavor. Here it goes: in a large glass sealable
container, add both a 750 ml bottle of your favorite brand of vodka and
a cup of Hothouse or English cucumbers (sliced) and seal tightly. Let
them sit for about two to three weeks at room temperature and from time
to time gently shake. When done, strain and place back in the original
bottle and chill. How simple can that be? I remember my Aunt Jan
cooking and pickling for weeks—so now I can be pickled for
weeks!

Some Men
Imagine a
play set in a gay bathhouse in the mid 1970’s and
contains four actors but fifteen different characters?
Got your attention now! This Terrence McNally play
opened last week at the Second Stage Theater and was in
a setting where men were known to ask men to do all
sorts of things—but marriage definitely was not
one of them. Taking place during eight decades,
Some Men is a series of breezy sketches about
gay American life from The Hamptons to a
Harlem nightclub in 1932 to a preppy piano bar in
Greenwich Village during the Stonewall uprising in 1969
and also a waiting room in an AIDS ward in 1989. The
Second Stage Theater is located at 307 West 43rd
Street in Clinton and for tickets and further
information, call them at 212*246-4422. Catch it if you
can, it only runs until April 15th. For
further information go to
