Amy Arbus is On the Street
Photographer
Amy Arbus spent a good part of the 1980’s documenting
the individuals that made up fashion anarchy in
New York City.
She has now collected those photographs and created both
a show and a book On the Street 1980-1990 and is
at the Cohen Amador Gallery and available
through Welcome Books. Amy assembled 70 images for the
book and 25 photos for the exhibit from more than 500
she took over her ten-year career at The Village Voice.
They capture the fun of the 80’s in a straightforward
documentary
style. Most famously is the picture of Madonna
called Madonna,
St.
Marks Place 1983
and was taken before her fame started. Even though
she’s flattered being compared to her mother Diane,
there was no intention to do a documentary and was clear
to the subjects that she adored how they looked. The
Gallery can be found at 41 East 57th Street
on the 6th Floor in Manhattan. You can go to
www.cohenamador.com or call them at 212*759-6740.
The exhibit will run through October 14th. |

Karen Lee Myers is at Storks Wilton
Manors!
Editors note: last week we linked to
an incorrect website, Karen's correct URL is
www.artnabox.com.
Karen
Lee Myers, local artist and photographer, is now on display at
Storks Wilton Manors in conjunction with ArtsUnited
featured artist. Now through September 30th,
come in and check out her works featuring Buddhas,
flowers, and nature. As a self-practicing Buddhist, she
enjoys crating prints with mindful moments in time of
images that are natural and some that are digitally
enhanced. I first saw a piece of hers, Silent
Thoughts, I said, When I looked at it I heard
Buddhist bells chime. If
I
owned it I would probably smile and take a second and
relax, before continuing with my hectic life. I want to
see what other pieces she has, if they are all spiritual
in nature, Eastern Philosophy based, shadowboxes,
whatever have you. I want to see more. Well, I
did. You can check out more of her work at her website
www.artnabox.com which gives examples of her work
as well as ways to purchase them. If you yourself are
an artist and have enough pieces to cover some walls,
contact Chuck at

him I sent you. |

Natacha Atlas, Thurs 8pm
Natacha
Atlas
is a Belgian-born singer with North African roots, looks
like a Shakira, and sings with such passionate intensity
that now she is a star within the Middle Eastern music
scene. She can use traditional beats and rhythms and
change them around to make them into hip-hop and rap
ones instead. One of her songs, Feen off her
Mish Maoul album, mixes it up between the Golden
Sound Studio Orchestra and rap. Hybrid is the word to
best describe her style of music and to miss her would
be a shame. She will be at The Rhythm Foundation’s

There
is a show at the Milwaukee Art Museum called
Biedermeier: The Invention of Simplicity and will
showcase more than 400 works, which include furniture,
paintings, silver, porcelain, textiles, and wallpaper
made in the areas of Germany, Austria, and Denmark
between 1815 and 1830 and will be the first major
exhibit in
North America. Little known fact: Biedermeier wasn’t a
person—it’s a style. It is actually German for
Unpretentious Man—and produced an imaginary
character—sort of an “everyman.” It came to represent
the artistic and decorative aesthetic of the period and
place and rejected the over-ornate and froufrouness of
the time and a precursor to modernism. So, if you feel
that you are simplistic in design features and need some
inspiration, check out

Iraq
Wants Their Stuff Back
Most
of Iraq’s National Museum is missing their artifacts and
with everyone’s help, would like it back. Priceless
memorabilia and antiquities are missing. The Museum was
founded in 1923 and is among the region’s best
collections of items from the Middle East from before
the Romans. After the US led invasion of the Iraq, a
looting spree followed devastating their collections and
leading directly to the Black Market. After the
invasion 5,400 items have been found and/or returned but
still more than 13,840 items are missing and unaccounted
for. There is no prediction of when the museum will
reopen and the area surrounding the museum is still very
dangerous. One of the most important pieces lost was a
Sumerian bronze sculpture of a bull dating to 2600 B.C.
yet police have returned another Sumerian piece, a mask,
dating to 3,100 B.C. so there is hope. What is sad is
the fact that there is a record of their existence and
it will be difficult to sell, even on the Black Market. |

America’s Least Wanted, Steven Kasher
Gallery
This past week launched the exhibit Least Wanted: a
Century of American Mug Shots at the Steven Kasher
Gallery, which focuses on rare and virtually unseen mug
shots of criminals of all shapes, sizes, and ages. It
all started for Mark Michaelson when he received for his
birthday a vintage Patty Hearst wanted poster and that
jump-started his interest in crime ephemera. What is
interesting about this collection is the fact that these
are snapshots of an era, sometimes a long time ago, some
with explanations, and some with just dates. These
demonstrate situations of duress and distress and
feature over 200 unique criminals such as hookers,
grifters, goons, punks, sneaks, miscreants and are both
male and female, and from adolescent to the elderly.
These photographs are part of a collection of over
10,000 American criminal mug shots ranging from the
1880’s to 1970’s that has been gathered over the past
ten years. The Steven Kasher Gallery is located at 521
West 23rd Street in New York City. You can
call them at 212*226-1485. |

Napoleon on the Nile
Even
though Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt was a military
disaster, there were a squadron of scholars and
scientists that went and ended up forming the foundation
of Egyptology and Egytomania, later gave Orientalism a
boost, and is commemorated by the 1,000 engravings of
the 23-volume book called Description de l’Egypte.
When Napoleon went to Egypt, he brought along 167
physicians,
engineers,
economists, mathematicians, zoologists, botanists,
archeologists, translators, journalists, and artists to
accompany the army. Their task was to catalogue all of
Egypt’s wonders which resulted in a body of work that
took roughly 20 years and 2,000 skilled draftsmen and
typographers to complete and became a renown image bank
consulted by artists seeking authenticity in their own
pictures. The collection, entitled Napoleon on
the
Nile: Soldiers, Artists, and The Rediscovery of Egypt
includes Orientalist paintings and a cache of
fascinating ephemera and is on display at the Dahesh
Museum of Art that is at
580 Madison Avenue
at 56th Street. You can call them at
212*759-0606 or visit them on the web at
www.daheshmuseum.org. This exhibit will be on
display until December 31st. |

Madonna Won’t See Stars Upclose &
Personal
It
was decided this week that Madonna (or Mah-DOHN-nah for
Europeans) will not be eligible for Moscow’s 2008
flight to the international space station. Alexei
Mitrofanov, State Duma member, said that Madonna’s
desire to become a “space tourist” will not happen—there
are more important things like the major elections of
both the United States and Russia. A representative for
the space agency said that there were no seats on the
Soyuz spacecraft until 2009 and given her phenomenal
physical condition, she would be more than eligible. |

L.A.M.B. Makes it to Fashion Week |
 |

This
past week, Gwen Stefani’s label L.A.M.B. (Love Angel
Music Baby) made it to the prestigious New York Fashion
Week even though she just gave birth to Kingston only
three months ago! Her new pieces are inspired by the
1983 gangster movie Scarface and Michelle
Pfeiffer’s look in the movie. The collection also has
Japanese prints, Rasta colors, and military
looks—including shoes and handbags. The collection was
designed while she was pregnant, and reflects her “weird
state of mind.” |

mass index. The five failed their appraisal test and
were over 5’7” and weighed less than 121.25 lbs. |

Fashion File/Project
Runway
Guess
Who’s Coming to Design?
Ok,
nails are almost gone, ripped off soo many times
throughout this season. I have screamed, cried,
laughed, and thrown up a little in my mouth—just
kidding. Well, this episode made me nauseous
to say the least. While at a party at The Pink
Elephant, they were informed about their latest
challenge, a cocktail dress. Like every time they turn
around, here’s their first surprise: Angela and Vincent
were allowed back! Since they had won
challenges, they were given one last try and when
I say last—if they do not win the challenge, they
will go home. Three people were to be slated for
departure. Do I have any cuticles left?
This
challenge was to design a Black and White cocktail
dress—but the wrench thrown into the mix was that they
had to use every scrap of fabric! This means,
anything bigger than a postcard—had to be used! They
were told this right before going to Mood
and we all saw the panic in everyone’s faces.
I was
quite proud of Laura, for winning with this simple 20’s
style dress and for the ingenious way that she made the
scraps of black fabric into ostrich feather sized fringe
for the bottom—and making a dress she would not wear!
While some of the designers just threw their excess
fabric into the lining of the purse they didn’t make
it just shows what true ingenuity can create. Sadly, my
last Gay Hope was eliminated, Kayne, but since the
challenge called for a Black and White and
the only white he had was a small strip looking like a
belt in the back, I’m sorry, I love you, but Bye Bye!
Luckily, both Angela AND Victor were eliminated, leaving
Jeffrey, Michael, Uli, and Laura.
Also,
the final four designers have just shown their
collection this week for Olympus Fashion Week at the
Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. This was filmed for a
two-part Season Finale that will be aired October 11th
and 18th—where the Winner will be disclosed.
Why four? Well, it’s because there are four
still left in the running and most of the show was
filmed over the summer, and in past seasons, Bravo
doesn’t want to ruin next week’s episode—where the
fourth is eliminated. Who will it be this week?
On a
final note, I was informed of the Project Runway
Party that is held every Wednesday in the Dana
Manchester Room at Alibi and was part of the
crowd. I advise arriving early, grab a cocktail
and be ready to hoot and holler! Trust me when I say
all types showed up, Muscle GODS, Bears, fierce and
fabulous—all were accounted for!
