The Wire Returns |
|
|
HBO’s
celebrated crime drama The Wire about life in Baltimore, MD is returning
Sunday the 13th for its fifth and final season starting at 9pm. For those of
you who are not familiar with the show it focuses it’s seasons on a different
aspect of the crime community from importing drugs to problems with the public
school system.
The first
season of “The Wire” (2002) concentrated on the often-futile efforts of police
to infiltrate a West Baltimore drug ring headed by Avon Barksdale and his
lieutenant, Stringer Bell. In Seasons Two and Three, as the Barksdale
investigation escalated, new storylines involving pressures on the working class
and the city's political leadership were introduced. Season Four focused on the
stories of several young boys in the public school system, struggling with
problems at home and the lure of the corner - set against the rise of a new drug
empire in West Baltimore and a new Mayor in City Hall.
The fifth and
final season of 'The Wire' will center on the media's role in addressing (or
failing to address) the fundamental political, economic and social realities
depicted over the course of the series while also resolving storylines of the
numerous characters woven throughout the narrative arc of the show.
The Wire can be
found every Sunday at 9pm on HBO and for a complete understanding of this show
and showtimes, go to
www.hbo.com/thewire.

Miss Damita Jo Gets Some
Discipline |
|
|
Our
favorite Jackson
is back and will be having her next album out
February 26th. The cover shot for her
latest single Feedback is HOT and there is
a lot of concern over how much PhotoShopping has been
done—who cares…it’s fierce! With a fettish-esque
theme to cover picture and outfits within the video, it
makes me wonder what the rest of the album
Discipline will be like.

Tampa Bay
As with the new
format of my column, I will now be featuring a city and some of the highlights
of it each week. I chose Tampa Bay, since I know some people there that
could use a little boost in doing things outside of just work. Right
now, at The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center they are producing The
Drowsy Chaperone from Jan 15th-20th and can be
purchased at
www.tbpac.org or you can check out A Tale of Two Cities at the
Asolo Repertory Theatre at 5555 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Tickets
are between $18-$56 and can be purchased at
www.asolo.org. If musical theatre is not for you, bring your Depends and
be sure to wear your AZZMASTAH shirt because
Margaret Cho
will be at The Improv at Centro Ybor at
1600 E Eighth Ave in Ybor City. Tickets are $30 and be sure to check out
www.tampaimprov.com for tickets and upcoming events.
For dinner, I suggest going
to 717 South
which is on Howard Avenue in Tampa, solely on the fact that it is a half
Italian/half Asian and with a sprinkle of Tampa flavoring. This homey
restaurant has burgers, duck salad, Thai beef, bread bowls, lasagna, pizza, and
espresso-seared steak all with a warm neighborhood vibe. Afterwards, as a Night
Cap, you can always stroll into The City
Side Lounge which is
more than just a neighborhood gay bar! They have a beautifully decorated lounge
that has good sized outdoor patio, pool tables, and a dance floor. With three
bars to choose from and a VJ spinning current Top 40 hits and classic Gay
anthems… what could be better? Well here are a few more ideas. If City Side
doesn't float your boat, G-Bar in Ybor
City has the biggest
dance floor in the area. There's also
Metropolis, another
great neighborhood bar that also has a good sized dance floor with DJ,
Flirt
with drag shows and for you guys that like to rough it up, check out
2606
and
7@14,
Levi-Leather bars.
Also, don’t forget the best
Day Activity to do in Tampa—Bush Gardens!
Located at 3000 E. Busch Blvd (McKinley Dr and N 40th St), it opens
at 10am and closes promptly at 6pm. Tickets: for a single day ticket it’s $56
adults and $46 children 3-9 and parking is $7 for cars and $11 for anything
bigger. For more information go to
www.buschgardens.com. |

Rebelling Against the Ordinary: Argentina’s Diana Szeinblum
Company Premiere of Alaska February 15th & 16th
Starting
Saturday, February 15th at the Byron Carlyle Theater in
Miami Beach will be Argentina’s Diana Szeinblum’s Company premiere of
Alaska. Szeinblum’s piece uses the idea of the state of Alaska represents
the way in which individuals in modern society are often isolated from one
another. In the piece, two women and two men come together and fall apart in
angular pairings and ménages simultaneously pan-erotic, veering towards violent
and coolly held-back. Clothes are pulled off and put back on again (the evening
contains brief nudity) as bodies rebel against the ordinariness and underlying
loneliness of everyday life. At one point one of the dark, handsome male
dancers, dressed in a business suit, sits alone on stage, a sign hung around his
neck: estoy desesperado….I am desperate.
Tickets are $25
for general admission, $20 for seniors over 65 and students with a valid I.D.,
or $50 for VIP tickets with priority entrance and seating. Tickets may be

Galanga
If
you never had the urge to go to Wilton Manor’s own
Galanga well
you will now! If you ever felt intimidated by the menu, I can give you some
selections that will make you want to go back time and time again. I literally,
know people that eat there at least four times a week.
I had a
flavorful Chicken Vegetable Soup, simple, clean, just salty enough for
flavor and the vegetables were firm and at the right texture. If they do not
have it, if you like the Thai soup Tom Kha it’s only $5 and has Thai
herbs, coconut milk, vegetable broth and was told it was spicy and good. If
vegetables are more your scene for an appetizer why not try the Edamame
which is boiled fresh soy beans for only $5 that are lightly salted.
I was told
Galanga's
Steak Salad, which is grilled New York Strip steak, lemon grass, lime juice,
grape tomatoes, and a bed of spicy chili sauce for only $8. I, personally,
don’t like spicy and they made it mild for me and I wanted to lick the plate.
If you are in the mood for sushi and want a little bit of everything, they have
the Roll Combination Plate which has half a California Roll, half Salmon
Skin Roll, and half a Spicy Tuna Roll for only $12 and is freshly made by the
Sushi Chefs of the restaurant. If you don’t think you will like the Salmon
Skin—change it out when ordering. It apparently tastes exactly what it sounds
it would taste like. Another suggestion for the Main Course would be the
Panang Curry Chicken, but with all the Curry dishes you have choices of
meats and types of curry thereby giving you the creativity you want. With
Panang Curry Chicken it has a thickened curry sauce, herbs, coconut milk, Kaffir
Limes, and ground peanuts all for $15 and is served in the largest
single-serving bowl I’ve ever seen.
I would
definitely say one of the best assets that
Galanga has, besides the amazing ambiance
and outside patio, would be the wait staff—they alone can make you want to come
back week after week. |

Gelato
Station
The newest
little sweet spot to hit Wilton Drive has just arrived this past weekend, The
Gelato
Station. Within the doors you will find: Italian Ice Cream,
Gelato, and Sorbet—all hand-made on premises. This place, with the friendliest
staff, will let you taste any flavor your heart contents. I, personally, found
the Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Hazelnut to be so good I had to bring my
friends and get a second helping. I overheard combinations such as: Lemon and
Raspberry, Coconut and Chocolate Almond. However, like the wind, whatever
flavors they have change all the time and you have to go in to check out. The
Gelato Station of Miami is located at 2031D Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors and
can be reached at 954-567-5930. |

Anthony Horowitz
Brings Us Alex Rider, Monday, January 14th
On Monday,
January 14th, the acclaimed author Anthony Horowitz will
bring to life his latest novel titled, Snakehead. If you
are a fan of Harry Potter books see if you could handle a storyline like this:
When his
guardian dies in suspicious circumstances, fourteen-year-old Alex Rider finds
his world turned upside down. Within days he's gone from schoolboy to Super
Spy. Forcibly recruited into MI6 (Britain's secret intelligence agency) Alex has
to take part in grueling SAS training exercises. Then, armed with his own
special set of secret gadgets, he's off on missions around the globe as
Britain's youngest secret agent. Sounds cool huh?
Well, back to
current times and in Snakehead, Alex finds himself in the employ
of the Australian Secret Service and recruited to infiltrate one of the ruthless
gangs operating across South East Asia. Known as Snakeheads, the gangs smuggle
drugs, weapons, and worst of all—people. Alex accepts the assignment, in
part for the chance to work with his godfather and learn more about his parents.
What he uncovers, however, is a secret that will make this his darkest and most
dangerous mission yet.
